QUOTE(Moonflown @ Dec 13 2010, 11:24 AM) Moonflown, would you mind asking the queries via the thread ? Itll help with similar questions other folks may have as well. I mean so I dont have to repeat the queries You understand right, if i reply all queries via PM, i may have to repeat it over and over Can you also later paste your query on the thread all the same ? Ill reply your query here too and paste the answer on the main thread later. ====================================== Answer from bro havocx Nope, havent tried. Reason : Dont have a reason to. Amazon Kindle takes PDF files directly without the need for conversion. Unless of course you somehow want to convert .PDF to .mobi. Ill need to try that out and report back. But really, Kindle has a capacity of 3GB free space for MP3 and other ebook files. PDF files display as how it is, only in black or white. ====================================== Yea I know but some pdf are way too small to be viewed with pdf format directly without conversion. They need zooming and scrolling around =) Heh Moonflown, You only added the answer but not the query, now folks dont know the question. Haha the question for the above is Hi I wanted to ask have you tried using Amazon conversion of PDF files? I have a lot of e-books in pdf formats and some of it are as large as 55MB. I wonder is it possible to convert and read it page by page in Kindle rather than scrolling around
Answer is above.
To your 2nd question : Hmm cant say I have the chance yet perhaps, maybe you can send me a sample PDF, ill upload it to mine and capture the picture out from it. That way, we'll both know. You have email address, send the PDF there and ill work it out

QUOTE(Moonflown @ Dec 13 2010, 02:51 PM) Sorry my bad =P, I'll send the thing to you now, thanks a lot. Hey hey, no worries, sorry for the delay with the reply, work caught up with me. So here goes. Im gonna give you the example of first of what happens if you copy a book that you have legally bought from Amazon into a Kindle that has an account that didnt purchase the book in the first place.
Remember I purchased Travel To Hong Kong ? My Kindle is on the right vs colleagues Kindle on the left. Copied all the files from my Kindle into the other Kindle, the error will show as Picture 2. Amazon ensures that books you have rightfully purchased cannot be shared with other Kindles. Unless of course the other Kindle is also registered to your account. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Your sample book, Pic 3-8 copied it in directly as PDF Pic 3 shows how it displays by default from the 55mb file. It may be a little too small for your eyes. Pic 4 shows me increasing the size of the PDF. Pic 5 shows the same pic like pic 3 but a focus area. Pic 6 shows the 150% increase in the focus but this is where you found it troublesome to scroll around Pic 7 shows an alternative i did. Instead of increasing focus, i just changed orientation. Pic 8 shows the alternate orientation with the fonts being nice and big. This way the left or right button are the only buttons you need to use to turn the pages, nice and easy. And dont worry not all PDF files get small fonts, it depends on how the originals were. Pic 9 shows the PDF file converted to .mobi, .prc. Horrible and cant be enlarged. Easier to just paste the PDF in. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Hope the answers help!

I have loads of eReader books (.pdb format) and Mobipocket books (.mobi and .prc fomats). Unfortunately, these are protected because it uses the device PID.
My questions are:- 1. Can Palm Books in .pdb formats be converted to Kindle Compatible books at all? if so, how? 2. I know that Kindle can read .mobi and .prc books, but how do I get it to open on the Kindle - or is it possible to find out the Kindle 3's PID?
I actually tried the old site but the Kindle 3 PID has an asterisks in it which does not register on the Mobipocket site - basicaly doesn't bloody worklah!
Oh great Kindle Grandmaster! Hope you can help little grasshopper here.
Cheers!

Hope you can help little grasshopper here. Cheers! Oy lil grasshopper, am no Grand Master. Am also still learning in this great vast world of ebooks. So here goes. These are some sample books in question I have to test it out.

Copied all of them into the Kindle, youll also notice that I did a conversion to the .pdb file. Please ignore the book names, haha they are just random ones I scored of the net. To your queries :
1. Yes they possibly can. However not all comes with excellent results as you will see in the pictures below. I used the Auto Kindle Ebook Converter, best one so far but that also depends on the quality of the .pdb book you have. 2. This really is a no brainer. .mobi and .prc files copy straight into the documents folder of your Kindle and youre golden, they read beautifully
Pic 1 - Dermamobi Book.prc shows in Kindle as ABC Converter Pic 2 shows that for some PDB's you get messy results of conversion. Unfortunately for this one it was converted from .pdb to .html to .prc Pic 3 is a pure .prc book that's copied inside and opened, which is the Wits and Beaux of Society» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « In conclusion simply, .prc and .mobi files can be copied in directly without conversion and itll show and display in the Kindle. .pdb files will need to go through conversion although it may not all be successful. Hope that helped! This post has been edited by havocx: Dec 17 2010, 03:27 AM

I need to select my cover too. Thanks a lot for your help. Thanks for asking your query here buddy, so here goes :
1. How do you purchase kindle books? Buy gift card way? or you own a US credit card? Any step by step guide Using our normal Credit Card. It doesnt matter that you dont have a US billing address, as long as the billing address is valid. Youre recommended to have a US based address though. Or you can do it like how some of the other forummers do it, using a Malaysian based Credit Card you purchase the Amazon Gift Card. From there youre golden.
I do have my own US based Credit Card but because of the loopholes ill have to go to making payments to it, I would usually just use my Malaysian based Credit Card. Step by Step ? Easy. Register your Malaysian based Credit Card on Amazon. Put your Malaysian based billing address. Make sure you also have a US address. Purchase your books!
2. Why would you need to use calibre since kindle 3 supports pdf natively? I dont ? Never mentioned I used Calibre. Dont actually know what youre speaking of ? Perhaps you were reading the guide for Kindle 2 ? Kindle 2 does not natively support pdf hence the workaround. For Kindle 3 its just a copy and paste. Never used or know of Calibre too.
3. Can you provide the link to the see the Official Kindle Leather Covers? I need to select my cover too. Here's the link. Amazon Kindle Covers. You get to choose your colours too from here. I really recommend the original covers simply because they fit the Kindle and I know the exact size they come in.
A little unfortunate lesson I learnt about Volumetric weight. In one of the orders, it looks like there is one Decal for the Kindle, its pretty light probably a few grams. Maybe less than 150grams in weight. Amazon packaged it in such a way that it was packed big, as in wide. Measurements were 18" x 7 " x 7". Divided by 305 which is the standard measurement DHL uses gets you 2.98KGs! Ouch !
So although its only 150grams in dead weight, for shipping its counted as 2kgs!
So in short, yes there are also Belkins, Roocases and a few others also competing on the Amazon market to be a Kindle Case. They may seem cheaper by USD 7 - USD 13 but really how they are packaged makes it non worthwhile since they will be packed big unlike the Official Kindle Case. If youre in the US they are cheaper but to ship them over, might as well go for the Original Kindle Case.

You brought up that we can use Malaysia credit card, I thought Amazon will not allow us to purchase if we using local CC instead US CC. A lot tutorial used VPN as well? Do you use it? Thanks again!!!

Amazon uses 2 ways of determining your location. Payment method is not one of them. Thats the reason why there's no problem even if you use a Malaysian bases credit card, US based Credit Card or even one of those Postpaid Credit Cards.
First location method is the mailing address. This is to ensure that youre residing in the US. Second one is more discreet and may hit you sometimes but rarely. This is via your IP address that youre giving out to see if youre in the US.
Reason for this location detection. Some books on Amazon has restricted copyright distribution ie the book may only be sold in the US and Japan but not UK and Russia (for instance). Amazon will then need someway to determine if the person receiving the book is in the countries it can be sold to or otherwise. First choice is off course always your address hence the need for the US based address. Remember again, payment method does not even need for you to have a US based address or US based Credit Card.
Its a little tricky when it comes to ebooks. More often than not Amazon just relies on the US based address. Politically sentitive materials for instance however may go through a little more scrutiny, they will want to make sure the IP address buying them is from the US. Of course with that, you can always use the various methods available to show that your IP is from the US.
I have a US based IP that I can use at home. In the office my company transmit a US based IP so I can purchase books easily without going through IP loopholes.

Getting Started

|
From the various blogs I've read, even if you use a Malaysian IP to purchase your gift cards or your e-books, Amazon will just ask you to confirm your address. Then you confirm as US. That's it. It's more of an annoyance.
If it ever becomes worse than that, you can always take precautions by using Hotspot Shield. Look it up. There will be annoyances and problems, but I haven't come across anyone who had to throw away their Kindle because of the Malaysia limitation issue.

Glad you did some research earlier, always a good thing. I can tell and you can see from the progress of this thread that really the US address and IP requirements are just mere nuisances, most folks are able to get through just fine without having to have to jump through hoops to get books which are either US specific only or UK specific only, and its just not Malaysia facing that limitation, Kindle does not ship to any Asian country, even Singapore except for Vietnam (strange but true), so you might think that Vietnam folks would not get the issue of IP and location limitation. In reality Vietnam gets hit with it too, so really almost eveyone in the world faces the same problem but in reality its not a problem at all

Package estimated to reach me in 5 working days. That will mean by Christmas Eve, ie 24th December morning. Ill need to be sure though so ill check it out. At this time, its already left DHL processing facility, its going to go to Hong Kong for further processing, tax and so forth. There will be no update until its reached Hong Kong. From my experience its 2 working days in Hong Kong before it comes over to Kuala Lumpur. Itll reach Subang Airport for final checks, taxes and processing and should reach me latest as I mentioned on the 24th.
For updates, you check my PM Updates as well as the first page in Bulk Status, you'll find most updated information I know will be there too.

QUOTE(fluene @ Dec 19 2010, 07:45 PM) Thanks havocx. Just out of curiosity, won't you get taxed for all these items? Yes of course! Kindle's are not classified as Computers, they are classified as Electronics hence will be taxed as such. The Kindle covers are Leather covers. It doesnt matter if they are synthetic leather or real leather, as long as the invoice for the shipping shows the details of the shipment, ill get taxed on the leather items. Having said that my question back to you would be Why worry ? Your payment has already covered shipping and taxes for the item your ordered for taxes out of US, taxes into Malaysia, shipping and fuel surcharges oh and shipping within Malaysia via courier too. The price quoted is only possible if its done via a bulk. A single shipment will hit you hard, if you see from the DHL website So ive got All bases covered. Fair right ?
