Galaxy Tab gets a price in the UK
Carphone Warehouse has got the hookup By David Neal Mon Oct 18 2010, 16:55 FINALLY the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet has a price in the UK. Samsung has been pretty tight-lipped about the Galaxy Tab's pricing and to date we have only rumours of wallet-repelling tags that ranged from £616 to £700. Although these were high enough to make even the Ipad look tempting, they did little to calm the enthusiasm for the Android-based time waster. The aforementioned prices came from vendors that appeared to have sourced their tablets through mysterious channels, so really they could have charged anything they wanted to the avid 'early adopters'. The official channels, well at least the Carphone Warehouse, appear to be a bit more reasonable. The Galaxy Tab turned up on the seller's website today and weighs in at £499 on a rolling, thirty day contract that also involves a tenner a month 1GB data charge. Alternatively you can take it as is for £529 and use it wirelessly at home or, we guess, with some other network provider's dongle. The £529 price tag is interesting as it precisely mirrors that of Apple's 16GB, 3G and WiFi Ipad models and could kick off style over substance buying decisions in shops all over the country. According to the Carphone Warehouse, the Galaxy Tab runs Android 2.2 'Froyo', supports Adobe Flash, has 16GB of onboard memory and includes a microSD slot. It is currently on pre-order only, and as far as we know it won't be released by Samsung until 1 November. But we imagine that Carphone Warehouse knows that already. Added on October 19, 2010, 7:35 amSMT-i9100: Japan Gets Galaxy Tab-Like Samsung Tablet by Serkan Toto on October 18, 2010 ![]() Last week at CEATEC 2010 in Japan, I saw attendees going nuts over the Galaxy Tab, which Japan’s biggest mobile carrier, NTT Docomo, won the local marketing rights for. And today, the No. 2 company in that space in Japan, KDDI, announced the so-called SMT-i900 [JP], which looks like a rebranded version of said tablet but is actually a different device. Like the Galaxy Tab, the SMT-i9100 has a 7-inch LCD touchscreen with 1,024×600 resolution, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, 512MB RAM, and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo. ![]() ![]() But spec-wise, the KDDI device is weaker, featuring no front camera, a 2MP CMOS camera (instead of the 3MP rear camera the Galaxy has), and just 4GB of internal memory (Galaxy: 16 or 32GB). In addition, KDDI decided to swap the TouchWiz UI with the Ocean Observation UI. KDDI plans to start selling the SMT-i9100 in Japan in February 2011 with an open price model. Added on October 19, 2010, 10:23 am ![]() Samsung Galaxy Tab selling for £500 at Carphone Warehouse By Rich Trenholm on 18 October 2010, 5:28pm Read Full Review Laptops Carphone Warehouse has revealed pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The hotly anticipated Android tablet will cost £530 unlocked and SIM-free, or £500 on a contract with TalkMobile. These are the most concrete prices we've seen yet, as Carphone Warehouse is actually offering the Tab with a contract. Previously, online retailers seem to have been taking a punt on prices, with Amazon, for example, initially quoting a massively controversial price of £800, which quickly plummeted to £680, and then £600, after the earlier prices quite rightly went down like a sandpaper sandwich with you lot. How do you feel about the standalone £530 price? Remember that you'll need a SIM card contract for 3G browsing on top of that cost. £530 is the same price as the lowest-spec 3G version of the Apple iPad. Both the iPad and Tab boast 16GB hard drives, but the iPad measures 9.7 inches to the Tab's 7 inches. Does the Tab make up for its smaller physical size with its camera, Flash support and other features lacking on the iPad, or should the Tab be cheaper than its main rival? You can net a Tab for a penny shy of £500 if you're prepared to commit to a contract with TalkMobile, Carphone Warehouse's own network. To our pleasant surprise, we found that involves a mere 30-day rolling contract, rather than an 18- or 24-month monstrosity -- you simply pay £10 each month for a 1GB data allowance, and you can cancel at any time, with no penalty. You'll even get a free month after you've ponied up your first tenner. The Tab arrives in shops on 1 November. We expect to see pricing get more competitive in the next two weeks as all the major networks and retailers jockey for price points -- and TalkMobile has set the bar low with its £10 rolling contract. To see how Samsung's slate stacks up against the competition, swipe your way through our face-off between the Tab, iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook. hopefully we not getting japs version
Samsung Galaxy Tab redesigned for Japan as KDDI's i9100 updated 11:05 am EDT, Mon October 18, 2010 KDDI to bring out redesigned Galaxy Tab in Japan Japanese phone maker KDDI has just introduced a redesigned and rebranded version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Called the SMT-i9100, it still runs on Android 2.2 and uses a seven-inch, 1024x600 multi-input touchscreen. The functional changes include a loss of the front-facing camera, and the rear-mounted one is reduced to 2-megapixels from 3-megapixels. The two 1W speakers are carried over, but battery life is rated at a low two hours of use or 12 hours of standby. It still uses the EVDO 3G and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with Bluetooth, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of built-in storage that's expandable thanks to a microSDHC card reader. KDDI's version carries a customized interface compared to the near-stock interface on the Galaxy Tab in other countries. The SMT-i9100 is tentatively scheduled to ship in February, though pricing hasn't been revealed. [via Impress] Read more: http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/10.../#ixzz12mQkGKLG |
