biggrin.gif 'Char bor kia or char boh' is always an attraction to any stalls. I remember I usually ride my bicycle from Boundary Road till Hamilton Road Flats just for an ice kacang. Why? "char boh kia' lorrr. drool.gif

PS/ During my childhood whenever there was a 'Phor Torr' celebrations there is always a bunch of stalls set up beside them. Usually they have this 'lin chee kang' or 'geng geng' and porridge stalls . Are they still in practice nowadays? Big tents are also set up as it might be rainy too. Also alot of 'char boh kia' ronda ronda also. laugh.gif Other than Penang, I have never seen anything like it in other states.

Anyone know of a night time malay stall (10 years ago) near the sunshine square area? (can't remember the road name), the malay stall is somewhere beside a big longkang, selling my favourite "KOAY TEOW GORENG BASAH" with prawns, watery, red coloured sauce and REALLY DELICIOUS which I never find another similar dish as this stall all these years (close to 10 years liao)

Added on May 10, 2011, 3:53 pmI have a few favourite stalls which don't know still there or not ...

1) man jian kuih at food court opposite sunshine square (crispy outer layer with lots of jagung and kacang)
2) koay teow kung fu - it's not far (a malay food court around Jalan Tengah, at the traffic light can see sunshine square from far ... )

quite a number of stalls already forgotten their locations ... hmm ... how time flies ...

some more ...

3) the duck meat drumstick vermicelli soup in one of the corner lot coffee shop in lip sin garden

4) char siew fan in taman lip sin too ( near the overhead bridge area )

I’m trying to compile a list of Penang Food as almost every other week we have people asking for places as to where to eat in Penang. Keeping track of the Penang Thread is difficult cos it is 62 pages and 1200++ post! laugh.gif

Please note
A. this thread is about places to eat in Penang and not where to stay or sight-seeing.
B. the list is not 100% accurate as such I’ll need your help in keeping it relevant and up-to-date. So feedbacks & comments are most welcome and also do remember TASTE is very personal hor..  laugh.gif

Can you please give me the GPS coordinate for these places? These addresses look like Greek to me.

Please go to this website. Find the place on the map and click and click again and the GPS coordinate will pop out. Should be easy for you but tougher than climbing mountain to me.

GPS coordinate?
Are you using garmin? then get malfreemaps.
http://www.malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8442
Most locations are already in their Point of Interest aka POI, and are clearly marked and label.

Beside a GPS you do need a physical map, which will be a big help, in case you are going to ask for direction from a Penang Lang.

Nokia's Maps? sweat.gif sweat.gif
It is not very localized. Doesn't have much point of interest.
Also some roads in Penang have turn into one way, no right/left turn and dead ends. It would be best if you can get a physical map and/or a Garmin GPS to plan your routes.

Thanks. A few more questions please.

1. Since we have a car, is it better to use it or walk for the heritage trail? Parking a big problem? How does the parking ticket work?

2. On hawker food center. There are many around so what others would you recommend beside the 2 you mentioned?

3. After Balik Pulau, do you suggest we cut across the island via Kampung Permatang Timbun and back to George Town? Or go further south towards Kampung Bakar Kapur, then following the southern coastline toward Kampung Sungai Batu, give Matu Baung a miss and north back to George Town?

BTW, we have 2.5 days there.

Much appreciated. There is nothing like a local telling me the where and what. Thanks

Walk and/or Trishaw
Parking a big problem? Ya
How does the parking ticket work? We have Coin meter or attendant come & write the ticket

2. On hawker food center. There are many around so what others would you recommend beside the 2 you mentioned?
There are many places for you to eat once you done the Heritage Trail.
In Little India do try Tajuddin Hussian goose curry at Queen street or Nasi Kandar at the Hotel Merlin coffee shop at Union Street.

Some are tourist trap like New Lane (evening) and Gurney Drive (evening) near Sunrise tower.
If you go to New Lane, you can park RM3 per entry at N5 24.844 E100 19.563, walk to Wisma Central open car park space and find a table there to eat. Be warn not a good place to sit if it rains. Before you order any food just make sure the price and are they able to serve you where you sit. The CKT, Chee Cheong Chok and Oo Chein is ok and reasonable.

After Balik Pulau use the Jln Tun Sardon, (visit the Rest stop on the left & take picta of Balik Pulau town), at the T-junction turn left into Jln Paya Terubong, proceed straight till you come to Ayer Itam Market Food Court N5 24.092 E100 16.690. You can order Penang Curry Mee or Loh Bah or walk around the area for some other food.
Park at the N5 24.108 E100 16.598, which the foot of the steps leading to the famous Kek Lok Si temple.

After Ayer Itam Market, drive to Penang Hill Railway station N5 24.491 E100 16.638 , park and experience the new Train ride up the hill.

Next day you can go to Ghee Hiang or Hin Hiang for Penang famous biscuit. wink.gif

Two and a half days, can you do it all? laugh.gif shocking.gif The whole trip, my guess is you will be glued to the GPS. You barely have time to sample the flavours and you will not be relaxed enough to actually enjoy the food. I have taken friends to Penang and many places otherwise, I know that if you want to cover everything in a short span of time, you are going to ruin your holidays. My suggestion is tour it in a relaxed way, enjoy and if you can't make it, Penang is not going to sink into the sea. There's always another trip. icon_rolleyes.gif

You are on a holiday and not doing the Amazing Race.

I grew up in Penang, most of my schooling years and a few years after 4 years working in KL. Later on I moved back to Kl but missed Penang dearly. Whenever I visit Penang again, I wanted to eat all the food I sorely missed in Penang. I wanted Hokkien Mee, I wanted assam laksa, I wanted ice kacang, I wanted Pasembur in fact I wanted everything in 2 days that I visited. The one thing that is a must was, " Sor Nya Chu, norr chiam" in Gurney Drive. I don't know it is stil available now but that was the way I ate rojak those days, not mixed but tangy little mangoes, slitted and deseeded, skewered onto a coconut stick. On top, prawn paste, rojak paste, chilly, seasame and crushed peanuts drool.gif drool.gif

In the end I ended up having diarrhoea back at the hotel. laugh.gif
