There are many who argued that rankings are not important etc, its YOU yourself that will make the difference.

When it comes to the crunch and its YOUR own monies that you are spending, then you want the best and nothing but the best.

For others, it doesn't matter lah, all same same.

How ironical or shall we term it hypocrisy!

You have a point here. Imperial is super expensive and I feel like I'm paying an outrageously crazy amount of money for just a 4 years undergraduate course. The expenses for the degree is the nearly the same as one would pay to do a lengthy 5-year medic course (which is usually the most expensive course offered within the university) in anywhere else in UK apart from London.
Btw, any Imperials hopeful going this Sep?
*
So ranking does not matter but value for money decides?
The next question to consider is if you know that quite a number of students there actually spend a whole lot of their savings there for a prestigious qualification, you obviously feel better.
I can safely say that the cost of education goes up every year and 10 years down the road, a high chance that you will regret if you forgo the chance. You would not have felt it if you did not apply in the first place but there was a potential expectation of a scholarship.

make sure you can secure a 2.1 Hons in Imperial otherwise your value may not be great.Big firms unlikely will take in anything below this result.YourROI will be poor.

So, if one is in the bottom 20% in Oxbridge or Ivies, it's another waste.
I think otherwise.

No I merely agreed that one should not compare the cost of Britain Universities to other Western-style universities in general when there are outliers like Imperial College.

I believe this is the best time for one to go and study in the UK especially when the pound sterling is weak (though I doubt it will ever rise in the near future) . I will cherish the chance of being fortunate enough to afford the cost and having close relatives situated in London that I could ask for help if the need arises. But it's nearly the whole of my parent's savings I am spending and that's the only thing that has bugged me ever since I firmed Imperial. My family isn't wealthy at all but I guess it helps when you only have to fund one child for education.
I think that is only the case for one set to pursue a career in Investment Banking in big cities like London, where they usually ask for high honours and big names like Oxbridge/Ivy. Correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers to your parents for prioritizing education and hope you do well.

Hi anybody here studying in the University of Portsmouth? Is it a good uni?

What course are you going for and what is your definition of good?

If its research-based, look for RG.

It's ranked 4th in the UK, according to this:

Going in September?

Which pre-U college are you at now? If this is for September intake, isn't it a bit late to be only getting reference letters?

Why NUS so low?

Just FYI, in the extremely remote possibility that international students may be able to look for jobs, after graduation. The oversupply of IB jobs is startling, 142 grads going for 1 post!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educa...ss-degrees.html

For those thinking about IB, go watch this 2011 movie called "Margin Call". wink.gif

For finance graduates opting for auditing or other finance jobs in bolehland, firms pay introductory fee to secure your services. So plenty of opportunities here including IB.

ya i do agree that other parts of UK are not exactly cheap. bristol is quite expensive as well. the amount i paid for my accommodation in Leeds was similar to my friend's in London.
*
Accomodation cost is a choice while food and other incidentals are discretionary.
I think the fees will determine the location more than food and accomodation.

actually, living cost does influence decision on where to apply......those with marginal finances will normally avoid london.....

yes, it is possible to get 'cheap' accommodation in london itself.....which by definition, means far in the outskirts of london, perhaps zone 4 and beyond.....so if the uni is in central london, as most of the top ones are, the transportation cost will be significant.....

on the other hand, in most mid size cities, it is possible to have cheap accommodation walking distance from the uni....and substantial savings in transport costs.....

other than imperial, ucl and perhaps kings, london uni fees are about equivalent with other russell group unis outside london.....
*
Choice for med is unpredictable but for engineering and finance, I think it's easier for a preferred location. Someone did pharmacy for about RM70k per year all inclusive, though at the outskirts.

To those who're currently in London, how is the market like for part time student employment ? I understand undergrads are allowed up to a max of 20hrs/wk. Is this still applicable ?
*
20 hrs per week still allowed for visa issued this year.

I just received a conditional offer from newcastle uni and an unconditional offer from heriot watt, still waiting for response from uni of bath, anyone in newcastle or heriot? I don't know if i should apply for passport now and i dont know where to apply for visa -.-"
*
Whichever uni that you are going, you need a passport if you need to travel overseas and for visa application.

You submit your visa application at VFS, Wisma MCA, KL. Before that you need to comply with all the requirements.

Time is running short!

Its one year tuition fees. Safer to add a month or two to the living expenses.

Other than the chest x-ray, any other medical report required to get thru immigration. Understand that its a random selection.

You don't normally eat your meals at home?

You go food hunting and tasting on every meal? How I wish I could do the same thing.

Anyway, have a great time there!
