not all a level subjects are the same....there are 'soft' subjects, and there are 'hard' subjects.....eg media studies, and the sciences, respectively....and a study a few years ago, suggest there is as much as 2 grade difference between subjects...ie, an a in media studies is equivalent to a c in chemistry.....

so obviously unis do take this into consideration....and like you said, they may choose aaa in the sciences/maths over a*a*a* in 3 soft subjects.....
*
Agreed.

I was looking more into the Malaysian context and the normal subjects that are being taught here and only A levels, Edexel or STPM.

Do you even know about the process?

You can send in applications as early as the opening date.

Some students don't have their AS Levels when they apply, because they did their AS exams in November and the results only come out at the end of January, past that initial deadline.

AS Level results are not required when sending in an application - the candidates will be considered when their results are reported but will not be rejected just because their results aren't in yet.

Subject combination is quite important for Business and Finance related courses.

Economics at Cambridge? Economics, Actuarial, Statistics with Finance, Business Maths and Stats, Mathematics and Economics at LSE? MMORSE, Mathematics and Economics at Warwick?

These are all Business and Finance related courses. Many of these require an A or A* grade in Maths outright, and specify that they highly prefer Further Mathematics, and give secondary preference also to Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Economics. If that isn't taking subject combination into account, I don't know what is. A long way off from "never at all".
*
Yeah. It should be AS or forecasted results.

As for the subject combination, I dont think you get what I was trying to get at. Doesn't matter. Anyway, its quite difficult to really understand what you wrote most of the time. Sorry to say that, sometimes you tend to stray and instead of making things easy to understand, you go in circles and finally ended up making it complicated and complex. rclxub.gif doh.gif

Aberdeen should be about 5,400 pounds for a 9 months period.

Manchester and Sheffield could be slightly higher at abt 7 to 8k pounds, if I am not wrong.

emmm i asked my friend studying in university of manchester he said he only spend around 5k + per month. is it possible that it goes so cheap?
*
5k is in Ringgit which is about 1000 pounds. I am talking about 800 to 900 pounds which is abt same.

It just like staying in Sunway Monash residence with attached bathroom and occasionally some beers, dining at Tony Romas, Fridays and Secret Recipe if compared to Aberdeen.

Doing some part time jobs with McDonald's or other fast food company can lessen your burden. You can get some discounted items or certain items deemed 'expired' but certainly fresher than many others. Not forgetting the free lunch or dinner. My brother use to work in McDonald's when he was there and it's workable.

For a start, I think uni hostels would be the best option rather than trying to get a place to stay via the Internet.
A 20 mins away from the uni may end up with a 20 mins train ride and not a 20 mins walk as imagine. Property agents have resorted to such unscrupulous acts resulting in legal action beig filed against them.

Agree, for a first year undergrad, Uni halls would be the better option as you will have more opportunities to make friends more easily. Residential colleges, in my opinion, would be the best but not all unis have them.

As far as rental listings are concerned, one can always verify distances, and request for more specific information before committing. Google map will also help in many instances.

Ps. MAS fares to LHR are quite competitive, surprisingly!

Which Mas site, pls. Not able to locate it.

Malaysian airlines website. I just checked last nite to compare prices. If you pay more, you will fly the A380.

Alternatively Silkair has promos for KL, Penang and Langkawi  till 30 September.

Due to connecting times etc and Silkair not considering East Malaysia as worthy of its "tactical promotion", we will be using neither.  sad.gif

Tks.

Added on May 23, 2012, 8:54 pmNoted that Bellerbys college A levels students are given Medicine Preparation Programme and Oxbridge Preparation Programme which give them invaluable advice. Potential med applicants are also given hospital and clinic experience.
And I believe other top A level colleges there does the same.

And foreign students based there definite has a big advantage.

I noticed from Sun newspaper today UCSI advert on successful placement of students in recent times in Uk universities. Noted that quite a fair number got into dentistry n pharmacy in Cardiff, Kings, Lsp, Queen Mary, Bath, Nottingham, Glasgow, Dundee, Bath and of course Ireland. But only 1 got into medic in Liverpool. Is it easier for dentistry n pharmacy? Just curious!

Not sure about dentistry, but pharmacy is easier than medicine. Pharmacy applicants need not sit for the UKCAT for a start.

Maybe limeuu could enlighten us more on this issue. Really a surprise to me.

how long did it take you guys to prepare for ielts?
*
Safer to take one month tuition from an experienced ielts lecturer. Rather to pay extra $$ if you need a resit.
Consider what's your purpose of the ielts also.

I'm heading to Uni of Manchester this Sept.
Any of my future senior here??
Glad if I could get to know some. biggrin.gif

Is it easy for foreign student to take part time job there?
one of my friends told me it is easier to take one in the UK compared to Aussie, is it true?
*
Depending on what course you are in?

Those that you think are "walk in the park", then I presume its ok to manage studies and work together.

there is no such thing as a 'safe' amount....it depends on where you will study (living cost) and the 1st year's fees........if you are going to london to do medicine, rm100k will NOT be enough..........
*
London will be >RM200k.

Then, maybe you could look at the Russell Group of universities which are research based.

There are 20 now, with addtional 4 in August.

Interesting how people tend to regard the Russell Group as the equivalent of the US Ivy League.

They are good and average universities within the RG. And even then each uni has their own "good" and "bad" courses. eg: UCL asks for BBC for Engineering compared to AAA in Southampton.

I would instead look at the ranking table for an individual subject and go from there instead of relying on what affiliations the university has.
*
Never said RG equivalent to Ivy league though some are equal to if not better than ivys.
Generally, I think rg should be the starting point. But many students prefer UCL for engineering and lse for economics, though they are better ones around providing such courses.

"The Daily Telegraph will expose further issues with the system later this week. The disclosures are expected to lead to demands for a review of entry requirements." - the daily telegraph.

Wonder which other unis will be "highlighted" later this week. It seems the mainlanders (PRCs) go for business related courses, not unlike the scenario in Australia.
*
It's sure to tarnish the image of Cardiff, which is also popular destination for Malaysians with its twinning programs.
Funny that 4As students from bolehland did not make it to their medic program. Maybe, those applicants should have consulted the Chinese agent.

i am not aware of any special arrangements jpa/mara have with uk unis....they do/did with some unis in oz and nz.....not sure if these arrangements are still done.......

They have this arrangement with Ohio U in US and I think subsequently, we either own it or have a say over the admission.
