Does the GBP800 to 900 inclusive of tuition fees ? Which uni you are in ? I am looking at non lab faculty. Thanks.

No. Sharing a room could be cheaper. GB600 to 700 per month. Definitely not in London.

I've been scanning through this thread regarding loans and they're pretty much old info.

Pardon me if it's a silly question but I'm interested to know how do I go about getting a loan or grants if I'm gonna study in the UK? Through Malaysian banks/agencies or ones in the UK?

Any examples of such agencies would be helpful. smile.gif
*
Getting loans at commercial rates just don't work. Don't ever try it.

Moreover, how are you going to secure the loan, even if its interest free.

Do it locally and think about it when you have enough funds for Masters.

I'm just kind of curious. Because according to my dad, I have enough funds to study in the UK but I really want to lessen the burden and pay the debts myself when I start working.

It really kind of bothers me that it feels like I'm using their retirement fund for my education, it just seems wrong even though I can. I can only just imagine stepping in my father's shoes...  unsure.gif

Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate it, loans are probably not the best idea.
*
Between a loan and dad's monies, the obvious choice is to use dad's monies. The loan interest would normally be higher than what your dad can earn from his money unless your dad is an astute investor.

Well, your dad is aware that his savings will be for his children's education as a first priority.

The best teaching and research uk universities are in the Russell Group. Look at the respective universities website to check out for further details.

the central issue for international students is the sheer impossibility of visiting the university campus prior to making your final shortlist and subsequent selection on the UCAS form.

I am indeed surprised that you chose Manchester Uni for postgrad.
thats not to say that its a bad choice but rather, it was an uninformed one.

and why do i say that?
cos you chose the Uni first and then have decided to start asking questions.
but my question is this. Are you asking the right questions?

still don't get my point?
1) who are your lecturers?
2) what is their standing in academia?
3) what ethnicity are they?
4) how far is your student accommodation located from the uni?

why are these questions important?
cos when i went to this top 20 uni in UK, i got a shock of my life.
2 of my 4 lecturers were a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi respectively.
They were my principal lecturers for the toughest two modules I was studying.
and I couldn't understand a damn word they said.
when students ask them questions, their standard replies would be 'lemme check, tomorrow tell you'.
but their 'tomorrows' never come.
so not only can they not speak proper english but they don't honour their word.
they get irritated when students ask questions.
then why in the blue hell did you decide to take up the position of a lecturer?

and the uni assigned me a student accommodation that was 45 mins away from my campus!

back to the main story.
even my friends commented that I would make a better lecturer than both of them combined.  brows.gif
and guess what?
1) these 2 clown lecturers did their degree in my uni
2) they were sponsored by my uni to do their masters (free of charge)
3) and were doing their PHD (also free) when they were given an opportunity to teach the modules.

so long story short, if you can visit your uni in the flesh then do it.
if you can't, then jolly well do your research first cos before you shoot your mouth off,
and tell people that 'i'm going to Uni ABC, I'm going to Uni XYZ'.
and when people ask you any or all of the 4 questions highlighted in bold above,
all you can do is give them a goldfish look.  rclxms.gif

and if you have the time, email your student admission tutor/officer.
bombard them with these questions.
afterall its their job to answer your queries.

and if he or she start overreacting then just tell him or her this.
'chill man. postgrad at Manchester is not as if its in the same vein as the one offered by Oxford, Cambridge or Harvard'.

and lastly, I hope you you don't allow yourself to be hurt by what i'm gonna say next.
what you've done can be described in a fictitious scenario.
you marry a girl whom you've never seen or spoke to before but have heard of her name.
the next day after your first night, you then start asking her about her
1) her favourite colour
2) her favourite number
3) her number of ex-boyfriends and on and on and on and on.

Mana boleh?  doh.gif  fikir dulu bang. unsure.gif  fikir baik-baik.  wink.gif

Which top 20 university that you went has such clown lecturers? Share so that other potential students won't make the same mistake.

i studied in UK for 2 year in a prestigious college for my A levels.
I got into a business course in a top 20 uni which I cannot reveal.
I did not like my course and my lecturers.
i dropped out in my second year in uni during the second term.

I've decided to do law now.
thats why I am re-doing my A levels now.
my previous A level grades are not good enough to get a place in this uni for law.
this is because in a matter of 2 years, their grade requirement went up from.
so here i am back at square one.
all the ranking bodies have shown my uni to be in the top 20 overall and in my previous course which was business.
it is also very strong for law. thats why I don't want to disclose the uni in case somehow they come across this thread and disallow me from joining the uni again.

actually if you read my previous posts you will see that i quote so many sources of news articles that show you that teaching quality in UK is in decline. this should not come as a surprise to you. in uk you have to rely on your own intelligence in order to complete your assignments. if you complain they will say you're a whiner and not cut out for independent learning in higher education.

my advice to all students going overseas is that always do proper research of the uni that you want to go to. find out who your lecturers are, what are you subject modules, get the reading list in advance and download or buy the books, do early reading and so on. preparation is key.

student agencies knows nuts about studying in uk. their job is to place the student in the uni and hit the quota. ask them about bank accounts, mobile line, student accommodation problems and so on and they will be unable to answer you.

but don't for a moment think that this will happen at every uni. im sharing my experiences so that you can avoid this hassle when you get there. if you're on scholarship you won't face these sort of trouble or problems. but if you're a private paying student then all this is bound to happen.

*
You earlier said you were in UK for one year but now you are there for 3 years already. You should have finished your business course and them opt to do law and you will have the best of two worlds.

Ok time to start!

I lived in university accommodations. Google Montague Burton biggrin.gif. I was lucky enough to be in the same flat with 4 other Malaysians, so most of the awkwardness and having to get to get used to another ones living habits sort of gotten averted as we're more used to how Malaysians tend to think and act.

Actual accommodations are quite nice, having to share one shower and bathroom kinda sucked but you can always look for accommodations with ensuite facilities. The staff here are very helpful and tend to sort out any problems quite quickly. You can always choose to tick the muslims option in the University accommodations selection parameters and they'll try to house you with muslims. I've  got friends living in Charles Morris, Concept Place, Devonshire Hall, Ellerslie, Henry Price, Liberty Dock and a few more I can't remember at the moment so let me know what places you're looking at and I'll give my personal view on it biggrin.gif

Most malay muslims tend to live around the area of Hyde Park and Woodsley Road as it's very close to Leeds Grand Mosque and there are quite a number of halal shops there. Don't worry about halal restaurants, there are plenty though you might miss McD and KFC while you're here  cry.gif There are also a number of halal butchers available, Mahmood's Butcher is the one I'd recommend if you're looking for a variety of different meats to choose from. It's slightly more expensive than non-halal meat (based on my research) but it only varies by about GBP 1 per kg.

I'll be renting a house with a few of my friends next year. Pricing is about GBP75 per month or GBP85-90 with utilities for a 4 floor house though you can get cheaper ones nearer to Woodsley Road (GBP200 per month per person.) Honestly, if you're not into the whole party drunken scene, you're gonna have a hard time if you're sorted into accommodations with foreign students (IE UK people.) I've got loads of friends that start of quite well but as time goes by, becomes more and more pissed at some of the attitudes and mentality of their housemates. I'm not saying all are like that but quite a number tends to weight towards the negative.

If you're looking for accommodations with malays, LumSoc (Leeds Malaysian Society) can help out as they've actually looked for around for places to house freshers every year. Do check their Facebook page and just let them know you're coming.

In terms of dodgy places, there aren't that many places to stay away from but NEVER walk across Hyde Park at night. There aren't any lights around and it's much darker than its surrounding with attracts a number of pickpockets and those sort of people. You'll hear a lot of ambulance sirens passing by, but that's only because Leeds as a hospital nearby the university laugh.gif

In terms of the university, obviously I'll be a bit biased but I love studying here. Doing mechanical engineering and most of my lecturers are quite competent at what they're doing. HAving studied diploma and going into first year though, I have already learnt most of the materials and I find myself not going to class sometimes  icon_idea.gif The chemical engineering is definitely more strict when it comes to absence of students as they check whether or not you're going to classes. I think 3 classes missed and you'll need to go meet up with the board, so make sure you go to classes!  brows.gif

It's true that you'll need to get medical checkup and medicine separately but NHS has been quite ok in my opinion. Had a friend who messed up his knee and the doctor had him do surgery and therapy free of charge so I wouldn't complain too much about it.

Other than that, Leeds is pretty pleasant! I love living here and I prefer it to places like Manchester because everything is concentrated and you can walk everywhere  thumbup.gif
PS I've got a friend doing chemical engineering right now and he says he'll be happy to help if you have any questions with the course itself.

There are quite a number of Malays in Leeds University? What is the main attraction there?

1. 5 packs of favorite instant noodles
2. 3-4 packets of cooking/soup spices
3. Chinese tea or Rempah Rendang or both smile.gif
4. Recipe for COMFORT food. Porridge, Nasi Lemak etc etc
5. Towels

Forget stationary, you'll be saving RM40 at most ? Just bring along your normal pencil case + scientific calculator. Things in UK are not expensive, but always remember to look out for deals.

Websites like hotukdeals.com and groupon.co.uk , your uni noticeboard among others are great places to find a bargain.

If you can, open a HSBC account here in Malaysia first. Look on Google Maps for the nearest HSBC near your uni/college and note the address. Request the M'sia branch to pre-set up an account at the UK branch.

Pack enough clothes for a 2 week vacation. Bring at least 1 formal outfit (remember the shoes!), swimming wear (slippers too!) and sports attire. Footwear you'd need to get used to wearing shoes ... even girls since they're most comfortable during the rain/cold.

EDIT: Don't bring more than 2 weeks of clothes ... you'd need to pack them again in 6/9 months anyway. Plus clothes sold in the UK are much more suitable than M'sia ones. Especially when machine washed.
*
I dont think its necessary to open HSBC here for UK use. Any UK bank that is convenient will do. The process is very very long and it doesnt serves much of a purpose. Just carry a bank draft and cash for 2 weeks and it be fine. Nowadays, transfer of monies to UK account takes less than half a day, even from MBB here.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me roughly what is the total cost for one year in the UK? Coz from what I heard previously it is around RM100k per year, but it turned out that it is much more than that.

P/S: The university I am looking at is University of Sheffield.

Please enlighten me. Thanks!
*
Excluding fees, you need at least 6,000 pounds for the 9 months period.

Sir, is the 6000 pounds cover food and hostel stay ? If during summer break of 3 months where can I stay ? Thanks.
*
Coming back will be cheaper with a return ticket at about RM3k. If you are looking for a job, the easiest would be squatting at your friends apartment. Most Singaporeans normally buy their own apartment to stay and you can get a cheaper rate during the break or look for cheaper alternative accomodation.

Hostel stay can average from 60 to 100 pounds per week and the rest will be enough to cover your other expenses. If you cook, its very manageable.

I think he is just cautious of the financial requirements. Asking different ppl give different answers depending on the financial resources available, also depends on where or what he is going to stay in and the type of meals he is going to take. Moving to a new place can bring a lot of uncertainties.

If you are using soft luggage, glass may break if no bubble wrap. A double layer will be sufficient to cushion the impact. Tried once with a glass in between the clothes and it was smashed o pieces upon arrival though the bag was packed to the max.
