1000 pounds ?
That's a lot, I'd say.
Unless you're living in some high class/expensive place.  laugh.gif

nah I'm just doing a cost estimation here to see whether London can suit my budget. UCL and Imperial is good but I want to see if it is worth the investment. Of course I won't like to spend that much of money. tongue.gif

the ukba estimate of living expenses in london is 7200 pounds for 9 months (the standard length of an academic year).....ie 800 quids a month.......

if you are expecting to stay on during the holidays, then you need to add to that sum......unless you can find work to support yourself.....which can be very difficult in the current economic climate......

If you rented a shared room that is catered, you'll only need upwards of 150 pounds a week. For 9 months that's just 5400 pounds (including rent and meals). Anything left can be spent on virtually anything (extra food, entertainment, books, supplies etc).

the estimate of course took into consideration additional expenses for other personal expenses like mobile phone costs, movies, eating out with friends, transportation cost, buying personal items like clothing, grooming and hygiene products etc........

I live in Cardiff so I can offer some advise. Other than school fees, I suppose rent would be your next biggest expense.
If you are planning to study at Cardiff University, your best options are to live in Cathays or Roath area. They are within walking distance to the university (10 - 20 minutes at most). I used to cycle to uni, even nowadays I cycle to work as parking in the city is quite expensive. Student accommodation should cost around £200 - £240 depending on size of rooms and facilities. Broadband, gas, electricity and water are usually all inclusive. I know of some students living in Riverside and Splott area. They may be cheaper but not as convenient and are not desirable areas to live.
If you live in university residential halls it should cost you about £2600 - 2300+ per academic year. Download this page:

http://www.cf.ac.uk/for/prospective/reside...s%202011-12.pdf

I do mostly home cooking so my cost are very low, say about £20 should easily last me a week. Takeaways can cost you around £4 - 6 per dish but their portions are quite huge!

If you need a car, it is relatively cheap. £500 - 800 should buy you a nice 8 - 10 year old Fiesta or Micra. Insurance is a killer and can easily set you back £500 at the very least. You can use your international license for a year. Travel by bus is around £1.25 onwards. If you get a return, you can use the same ticket the whole day. Train is expensive. A trip to London and back is about £72. I use Megabus. Booking online in advance cost a mere £1 all the way to London!

I suspect cost of living in Glasgow is pretty similar. Personally I prefer Cardiff for its relatively better weather, nice friendly people and lovely city. Glasgow is rather gray and gloomy and the city has seen better days. Good luck! smile.gif

Hello. So total up will be around how much? Will the cost of living in Sunderland be cheaper than Cardiff?

£500 - 550 per month should be very comfortable for a single student. Sunderland should be about the same.

hi, what is the approximate living cost in London? Is it safe to assume that 1,000 pounds is the maximum cap per month? smile.gif

Well to be honest staying in central london will easily exceed that budget, but there are definitely ways to reduce that though.

Buy in UK. Better choice and quality here. If you are really on the cheap, there are charity shops that sells good condition second-hand jackets, books, etc at knockdown prices. smile.gif

it's summer now, so you don't need very warm clothing at the moment, although i must say, it is a rather cool summer this year..........so some light jacket you may already have is sufficient.....

buy warm clothing when you arrive, like tiger says, cheaper and more range........

the other trick is, if you want good quality and cheap warm clothing, buy during spring, when it starts to warm up......stores usually will have hefty discounts to get rid of old stocks, if you are lucky, that nice leather jacket you have been eyeing may be selling at 20% of the winter price!......keep them for the next winter, it's only one season out of fashion...... biggrin.gif

I agree that you should only buy such clothes when you get there...

1. Most are cheaper (for the same things) even after the exchange rate

2. Products at least equal to or superior to those you could get in Malaysia

3. Reduces the amount of stuff you need to bring along when you travel

4. You'll only buy it if you need it (as of now you probably don't know what you may or may not need, and stocking thick clothing when you might actually be able to handle a wee bit of cold is quite a waste)

1000 quid is quite alright for a comfortable life in London. ie: proper restaurant meal once a week.

Imperial fees are notoriously high and I would seriously look at other options before committing.

If my maximum baggage allowance is 20kg.
What should I prioritize ?
I'm thinking short sleeves won't be much of a usage when its cold.
What about food ? Should I bring some maggi + milo ? lol
To cure homesickness sad.gif
Please advice.

Probably not.

In the UK the top ones are (this is debatable) Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, Warwick, Imperial (not necessarily in that order).

Then comes schools like King's, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Bristol, Exeter, SOAS, York, Southampton etc (and most of these aren't even really big schools).

Of course you have some which are really well known for certain things in the UK... Oxbridge is just Oxbridge (subjects don't always matter for these two, but they don't have everything, e.g. you can't study straight Economics at Oxford, or Actuarial Science at either)... LSE for Economics, Politics, Government, International Relations, and Law... Imperial for Science and Engineering... Warwick for Mathematics or Economics... UCL for Law...

What surprises me is how often students don't even include a single one of the top few amongst their maximum of 5 choices.

Oxbridge aside, it's probably because of the fact that most of the top schools you listed are much more expensive(except Warwick). Higher living cost too as they are based in London. (again, Warwick is the exception).
