Not true. The upcoming 500mm F4 G is a SSM lens. It is known as the Silver Cannon... laugh.gif (The 70-400G SSM is known as the silver bullet). The 300mm F2.8G is also a SSM design.  nod.gif

wow..500mm drool.gif

true..to be exact...from my noob understandings.. 85mm and 135mm are considered as portrait lenses and hence does not require a fast motor..same thing for 24mm, 50mm, 30mm etc.

those super telephoto prime lens usually have high speed motors as they are often used to shoot fast actions sports, wild life etc.

correct me if i am wrong. blush.gif

i think Sony is making/upgrading all their lenses to SSM/SAM. like before the 55200 , now the new ones with SAM 55200 laugh.gif.
also the new coming CZ24mm SSM, 35mm 1.8 and 85 2.8 is SAM.
then so that the NEX/NEX-VG users can use all the SOny lenses (SAM/SEL/SSM) .

but if like dat sure the older lenses and minolta lenses punya price turun ( sad.gif and rclxm9.gif )

Mikeshashimi: Yes that's the one. Dunno if it is free of charge or not.

kevinwcw: You have the 16-35mm already yes?

Bear in mind that the Zeiss 135mm is screw-driven and will not AF on the NEX-5 + LA-EA1. Also it's too long on the NEX-5, and not stabilized, which affects video (you can get by with a fast shutter speed for photos, but body motion will be obvious in video.)

The 24mm makes more sense on a supposed firmware upgraded NEX-5 + LA-EA1 but you already have the 16-35mm.

I would rather get the Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM.

zstan: Not an absolute truth; there are fast-focusing primes with in-lens motors, and there are also primes with slower in-lens motors than the screw-drive version (Nikkor 50mm F1.4 AF-D versus 50mm F1.4 AF-S comes to mind.)

Price won't turun because Sony will discontinue the screw driven version and sell onle the SAM / SSM variant. Then the 2nd hand market for screw driven lenses will change (depending on the new version's verdict, of course).

OR if kevin intends to use it exclusively on the NEX alone, then he could get an optically stabilized lens from other manufacturers (losing out on the AF of course)

the a55 finally got a score from dpreview -76%

The Sony SLT-A55 is an excellent all-rounder with a comprehensive feature set. The translucent mirror technology gives it an innovative touch and the best live view AF on the market. Continuous shooting performance is the best in its class - just don't plan on shooting the Olympics with it.

we're buying cameras so that we can have bragging rights nowadays? that's new... that's so mature.

probably due to the nature of translucent mirror where a small fraction of light is lost to the AF sensor
less photons projected to the image sensor thus slightly lower quality?

but i would think the continuous AF during video would have pawned 550D easily

I think is the color accuracy and noise level on high ISO

Like NEX series, the Sony A55 has weaker performance on low light video shooting and little in accurate (color accuracy) compare to 550D and also it is a little bit noisy on high ISO too.

On the other hand people who likes video would highly argue for full manual control, where A55 doesn't have it.

Now there was 2 kinds of video camera option ...

1 - is the full manual control which is much interested on videographer for more special video shooting effect (EOS 550D)

2 - is the fast AF without full manual control which is much interested on someone who take video as a bonus or an option (Sony A33/A55)

People who just take photograph would just don't care about this but in this competition for Hybrid DSLR/EVIL/DSLT era, video takes another new important role for sure as nowadays videography by using DSLR becomes widely popular.
