Try and play flash first. It would be totally different. I also last time like you too. Either get a new lens or go for flash. Prime would take you so far but with flash its totally a new experience. brows.gif

Over a year ago, 10th July 2009 to be exact, I built my own ring flash light modifier! One can either stick a lens of 77mm diameter through the hole, or turn the modifier upside-down to become a directional light, looking very much like a beauty dish.

This is how it looks, straight on, through the ring.

Muzzammil not against the wall. I have to say I really like the directional light mode!

How about some macro?

This was a far more difficult shot (thanks Kevin Wong for taking this!) Two flashes with wide-panel diffusers pulled out, and one flash with ring flash light modifier from above.

user posted image
My inspiration to build this came from another lighting modifier master, Templar! His far more refined version is on the right. Trust an engineer to make precision look easy!

There was, also, this O-Flash RF175 light modifier - it was significantly heavier, but gives one stop better light transmission. Did I mention that the light modifier sucks power and decreases range significantly?

The bottom left picture with with the O-Flash; the bottom right, with my version, which had a warm cast.

Version 2, built on the 1st of August 2009, transforms and holds a Sony HVL-F58AM flash. However I'd rather lug around the Version 1 because the collapsed Version 2 doesn't fit in much smaller bags.

Someday when I am freer, I shall revise this into an even smaller design, I hope. It would be too easy to make a collapsible beauty dish - but ring flash?

Left is Version 2 next to a Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 Digital. Powered by 2 AAA batteries, that ring flash amazingly packs a punch - it can even be triggered by your camera's pop-up flash! Now, if only it would fit lenses having a filter thread size bigger than 72mm... (though, you'd want to stick a medium telephoto through this, so you'd probably zoom your lens through it.)

The whole idea of a flash is to help with the lighting, whether it is direct or bounced. The flash is not a magical device that will turn your photography into some genius level or what-not.

Photography needs light to work, no question about it. Flashes provide light but you control the exposure. Keep that in mind. There's no such thing as direct flash or bounce or whatever is better. It should be how you want it to be.

Here are a few generally misunderstood notions about pop-up flash:

1. Pop-up flash are harsh
Really? Why is that so? The fact is that the pop-up flash is the weakest flash you can have. The external flashes are all more powerful than the puny pop-up so why is the pop-up flash labelled as harsh? Doesn't it make more sense that more powerful light will create harsher lighting? Don't believe me? Try looking at a spotlight at close range.

The pop up is in fact not as harsh as you would believe it to be. It's limited by it's weak output. To get decent lighting from the flash you have to get close but sometimes you're too close. Thus the harshness.

2. The pop-up flash sucks as a light source
This happens when people try to make the pop-up flash their main light source. It's never design to be a main light source for anything. It's designed more as a fill flash. Use it accordingly and it will work well for you. Use it more during the daytime and not during the nightime when you know you don't have a good enough light source to work with.

Flash photography is not just about having a flash gun. It's more about how you use the light from the flash gun to help you get the pics you want.
