i have got this issue when i work in call center before. I always feel that i am speaking some words that my cust from hong Kong doesn't understand even we are speaking cantonese. because we are so used to the Malaysian cantonese that we have include some Malay word on it, we didn't realise.

for eg.

agak-agak
马大 (polis)
巴沙 (pasar)
lui (duit)

what else? anyone can sponser some?

I think there are some words we think originated from Malay but actually came from the Hokkien dialect.

Why not just speak Mandarin or English when the miscommunication happens?

Hongkong mostly cantonese...Our language is so rojak..

If a cantonese cant translate to mandarin, then its a mixture.

During my trip in hong kong, i went 7eleven buy drink then i ask for a drinking straw, i say, yao mou 'sui chou' （水草）? The cashier person confused, then i say 'straw'. She said is it 'yum kun' （飲管）? Then i say yes. LOL. Now im wondering why we malaysian call the straw as 'sui chou'?

Tarpau is a valid cantonese, just that in HK they dont use it that often

The one that sticks out if you are in HK or Guangzhou must be...

1. Sow mah (everything)....correctly is "chuen pou" OR "hampalang"
2. Lui (money)...correctly is "chien"
3. Lok shui (raining)..correctly is "lok yee"
4. Mar Tar (police)..correctly is "kheng chak" or HK's slang word "Ah Share" but we also have slang word "Sui Yau"

And err..we got most of the foul language correctly
