Rough translation/summary:

In order to defend the new Real-ID feature for BNet 2.0, community manager Bashiok posted his real name on the SC2 forums. Within minutes users were able to get information not only on his CV, but his telephone number, address, age and preferences as well. In addition, they were able to publish his wifes name, that of his cohabitants and the name of his childrens school.

To top it of they found a picture of his house via Google Street View.

Bashiok has already canceled his twitter account.

No risk of privacy issues my ass.

Fantastic, keep up the good work Blizzard doh.gif

There you go.

The internet nowadays is like a whole viral marketing place.
One little info will be able to dig up a whole gold mine.

never, ever, underestimate the power of Internet trolls.

That's exactly the kind of things I was worried about...

Having played Wow for more than 3 years, gone through my fair share of guild/loot drama, I can totally know how personal some people can be with a game like WoW (I would say MMO are the worst for the amount of "attachment" you end up having for your characters/account)

The RealID is removing a fair share of anonymity and protection for everyone without real advantage for the players.

I could almost take bets on when the first Wow-related-IRL murder will take place over a piece of virtual loot.

Cheese,

I retract my previous statement.

It is still a security risk not worth risking.

the names only appear in the forum...
no matter wut happen in game, they wont have ur name unless: -
- u enable ur IGN to be shown in ur bnet forum profile and u made a post there
- that some1 is ur realID fren

This is to be expected since he associated his Bnet nick Bashiok to his realID. It's not that hard once we found someone with slightly the same name & related to Blizzard. Like mentioned in the Blues post, you have the option of not including your IGN with your realID in the forum.

To reveal your name without concealing the fact that you're a mod of one of the most troll infested forums, Bashiok must have balls... or lack of brain juice. rclxub.gif

I believe we've been aware of the power of these stalkers all these while, no?

@evofantasy,

Let me tell you, our privacy is always protected. WHY?
It's because somewhere, someone who might have grudge on you, OR just to troll you, likewise in our DEAR KOPITIAM SECTION, will dig up A WHOLE LOTS of information on you and posted it out public, either to make fun of you, or whatever.

Ok, let's say that if you don't really care about it. What about your wife? your sister? Your parents? your friends?

They all might get mocked up, just because your information WENT PUBLIC.

You lack of some thinking, boy.

HONESTLY,

You really lack of thinking my boy.

The arguments is not about the forum.
The arguments is not about boycotting the game.

The arguments lies here is invasion of your privacy.
It's all about P&C matters.

With all these arguments, I think it's appropriate to come to a conclusion that different people perceive private information in different manner.

For me & evo, having people know our real name is nothing while to some of you, it is something.

Just like Facebook where you still see someone with xXxUchihaSasukexXx while some with their real name. It's all a matter of how you set the line on how much you're willing to reveal to the outside world.

GG no re.

Well, I am using my real name for my nick here.

So it's nothing to me but something to you and him.

Either do what you preach or don't preach.
