guys, a question:

the transfer speeds of external hdd, does it depend on the casing?

like, are there any difference between cap ayam cases and those that come with the casing by default?

for example, i have this Cliptec case with a 640 gb WD 2.5" caviar blue inside. how would it compare to the WD Passport 2.5" drive?

thanks!
*
Try to benchmark it, if around 30MB/s, it doesn't really matter much.

i'm thinking of getting a 2.5" external hdd 500GB, does buffalo ext hd comes with e-sata? or any other better brands that comes with e-sata? thanks in advance
*
e-sata has a limitation, it can't power up the drive..., thus, you need to have a USB and e-sata port

USB 3.0 requires new accessory if you on USB 2.0

Heads up guys.

Wanna know why Samsung's 1TB F3 is bloody cheap at Jayacom? (RM181)

They're OEM drives. I bought 3 units today and checked the serials online, and got this:
CODE
Code 101   This product is a component of a system (OEM).
Please contact the system's manufacturer for service.

The ones I bought at viewnet however, gives a code 100 (This product is under warranty. )

The drives come without the usual plastic housing and 4 screws. Instead you'll get a normal anti static bag. Oh and the warranty is a mere 1 year from the shop... not sure if it is possible to RMA directly to Samsung after that though. With Seagate I've managed to RMA some OEM drives... gonna ask Samsung about this.

The drives however are fine so far.

thanks for the head ups

If it is WD, just submit RMA at WDC.COM , but be careful to assemble back the hard disk and case.

I would rather buy 2 samsung F3 1TB for RAID-0 than buying WD Black 2TB

Well ... that was just me
*
RAID-0 is dangerous to begins with, it does offers almost double the burst speed though

is it true that there is a limit for a hardisk to be formatted.. means that if u formatted it a lot.. the disk will be useless mucchhhh more earlier than expected..
*
It should be a myth for normal hard disk. For SSD, if without TRIM, it will reduce wear level each format

Any of you running RAID-5 mind sharing what your transfer rates are, for comparison purposes?
I don't have much to compare yet, just a network-based file copy (since its a huge one, needs time to finish)

I'm running 8x 2TB WD Green (WD20EARS) in RAID-5 on an Areca ARC-1222 controller (Win 7 HP 64-bit).

LAN-based transfer over 1Gbps LAN from another PC, 4x 2TB WD Green (WD20EARS) in SPAN mode to the local RAID-5 array, using Windows file copy from mapped drive
Total transfer size: 6.69TB (estimated total transfer time: 24 hours) - entirely video files in .avi, .mkv, and BD/DVD rip directories.

Average transfer rate: 74.9MB/s (as measured after 2.18TB has been transferred)
My NIC is showing I am using around 700Mbps of the LAN bandwidth, so not sure if the LAN is saturated (with the remainder used by the LAN overhead) or if the bottleneck is the RAID-5 write speed or the source SPAN array (my guess is that it's either the RAID-5 write speed or the LAN is saturated).

Once this is completed, I will try some other combinations like WD Black -> RAID 5 (same computer) and then in reverse, to get a read-based transfer rate.
*
Hi, you got a really nice Areca ARC-1222. may I know where do you buy it? A quick lookup it is hovering 400usd sweat.gif

Getting 74.9MB/s is great.

How to check the SSD whether is trim or not ?
*
check from the SSD manufacturer, I reckon it does need Windows 7 to have TRIM

Eg. it does state it support TRIM http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/soli...sata_ii_2_5-ssd

Viewnet and Cycom.
However, understand that it is the drive only.

WD Passports are still around the RM200 range.

Good time to buy HDDs though, as I'm expecting a slight bit of shortage after PC fair.
Seagate Expansion 1TB only selling for RM239 now, RM10 less from the week before lol.
*
Not too sure whether it is wrong price list, it is now listed at 170MYR, wasted, did not shop it...

But its warranty period shorter than WD Black Caviar of the same range.

WD Black 1TB is 285myr, while Samsung 1TB is 195myr. That mean WD Black is about 46% expensive than Samsung for extra 2 years.

Somebody high above you has given you another opportunity to retrieve your data. Take it!

Maybe it's 'alive' for now because it was from a cold boot. Once the drive warms up, the problems might come back again. This behaviour is what I used to retrieve what I could from one of my HDDs before having to RMA it.

agree, read some way back in years that, a remedy that putting hard disk in a sealed pack, in fridge box, and after some other time, and pray for it works.
