hehehe... fertilizer making machines...
Pending your guinea-piggies' size (age), you can choose to feed them controlled amount 2 to 3 times a day (every8 or 12 hours). Modify the fish food dispenser, it should dispense a controlled [quantity] amount every 8 or 12 hours. Haven't seen a proper good one selling in m'sia yet... Mainly, even humans strive for good health and longevity, so should your snuffles. They keep eating and no exercise, will become very round and fat... which actually shortens their lifespan... GPs absort vitamins best at night, i.e. fresh organic fruits / vegies / grass. BUT pending M'sian weather, and where you house your GPs. If it is very hot during the day, you can reverse the order, (i) which provides Fresh Vegetables during the day, keep them having moist organic food to 'tahan' our extremely humid (air is full of condensed water) and hot weather... at least until evenings. Look at your piggies' size, you can gauge how much to provide, just enough to last thru the 8 or 12 hours (about 2/3 their body size volume of fresh food when compacted). (ii) At night, you can add in most of the mix: Complete Food + GP Cobayes Pellets + Granule, nuts, organic mix. The favourites will be munched away, and the smaller granules and tid-bits will last next day. Alfalfa would be supplementary, every week or 2 weekly. Fresh hay anytime, dried hay can be recycled, they love to hide and as bedding. (For total pellet mix volume, about 1/2 the size of each piggy). For those having young piggies, recommended at least feed 3 alternate times, with both mixes available (vege, fruits, grass, and the pellets). Lots of room, and take them out at least an hour a day for outdoor, to run about (in your hands or on your furniture is not counted) for exercise. To keep them fat and round instead of lean and healthy, simply add more food. |

QUOTE(weikent @ Aug 7 2010, 02:49 PM) Hay is mandatory. Without hay, they would not get the nutrients that they can only get from hay, thus weaken their immune system, stunt their growth, steals their appetite and eventually, slowly, weaken them to their premature death.Heres some more advices regarding hays: QUOTE According to Dr. Curt Nakamura, an exotic vet specialist at Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos, California, grass hay is an important part of a cavy's diet: "One of the most important items in the guinea pig diet is grass hay, which should be fed in unlimited quantities to both adults and baby guinea pigs. It is important to provide an unlimited source of hay because pellets do not provide enough long fiber to keep their intestines in good working order. The long fibers stimulate muscle contraction of the intestines to improve and maintain gut motility (to prevent gastrointestinal obstruction). Chewing hay is also important. Like rabbits, the molars in guinea pigs are constantly growing and must be ground down by chewing. Constant chewing on hay promotes healthy and normal wear on their molars. Treats and chew sticks are not efficient at wearing the teeth. Alfalfa hay is rich in protein and calcium, but when combined with pellets it doesn’t have the proper ratio of calcium and phosphorus. This can lead to improper gastrointestinal motility, such as diarrhea. It also may predispose certain guinea pigs to calcium oxalate bladder or kidney stones. Timothy hay is a better choice and is becoming more readily available. It’s important to keep your guinea pig sleek, so cut down on the amount of protein and calorie-rich pellets while feeding timothy hay." This post has been edited by emino: Aug 7 2010, 03:08 PM |

I have a dilemma...I found a very poor kitten for adoption,I felt so sorry for him and i feel like adopting him...Plan to keep him as an indoor cat, freely roam around my on my apartment, and maybe cage him only at night if he is not sleeping with me. His cage will be in the same room where my Gps are. My gps have their cages but I usually let them roam free in that room as they are happier that way...
do you think its ok to keep Gps with a cat? I think i can control the cat as I will avoid him go near my gps, but will Gps feel disturb with a cats presence (sound/smell)? |

My gp dont like or dont eat hay (orchard grass from living world brand) even after i put only hay and no other food inside the cage. Can you tell me what type and brand of hay your gp eat? Maybe the hay i bought is not delicious. FYI i put hay 24 hrs in the cage. My gp eat salad, pellet, and sometimes it want cucumber.Heres some more advices regarding hays: This post has been edited by shukri77: Aug 8 2010, 11:18 AM |
