Hehe, often best to sing whistling song / 'talk' to your GPs while walking towards their habitat zone, least to minimize the timids being "startled" by a giant appearance...

Due to their louzy eyesight, eventhough they have been trained and accustomed to 'Human affection', they might sitll get 'terkejuted'.

tongue.gif cute!

how do you place the gps while traveling? besides the cage (if the cage is too big that is)

For local MAS airlines, you can pay a bit more for the Live! airfreight of your GPs, and with the paperworks.
Pending which country's airlines, some the air steward(ess) even helps to feed them according to instructions.
Special cages, preparations are also designed for it (international).

The checklist is in the attached .PDF formatted file below: (Page 7)

could someone kindly answer me question above..  biggrin.gif  notworthy.gif
*
NO, NO and kindly please, janganlah bos! Don't use 'ZooZone' cages for GPs... (replace the plastic top only solve half the issue)

Not enough ventilation, mist and vapors, don't have contoured flooring nor the right easy to maintain design, the "Blue Tubs" (plastic tub) is ole skool, and a hassle.

_

If you have some maids, double-triple storey C&Cs might be nice to see, as your maids help you do the cleaning once you teach them what to look out for. Gonna do this often for life... and GPs live very long too haha!

_

A good cage should be:
(i) Easy for the feet of the piggies (+)add on a soft 'holed' padding / flooring on top of the fat grilled cage bottom.
(ii) Allows a household GP pet family to clean it within a few seconds
(iii) Allows organic stuffs to 'drop' down to the maintenance tray
(iv) Separates liquids further via integrated design, which prevents any odor
(v) which also translate to ur piggies dun ve to take bath every 2-3 months, but they 'd sure love warm water fun everytime

additionally:

(vi) A cage should also be suitable for cold (winter) and tropical (very humid) countries. Modular, capability for "add-on".
(vii) Safe from rats, crow, owls, cats, snakes, yet accessible to the owner and guests/ friends.
(viii) No glass no alloy/ metal used.

We'll petition for some mass production of these specially designed cages (and for different airlines as well)... just wonderin pet lovers party too much, everyday alcoholic.. who's gonna actually do the work... ?

... pretty honest to say, even since last year, these imported ones will only keep going upwards... as mentioned in GP topic version 6.0

overseas demand is very high, in Beijing oredi sellin near rm 1K (CNY2,000), not even comparing to Tokyo or Hong Kong.

simply calculate the airfright, lots of 'misc' handling fees, care, etc...

anyhow, it's good to try, see the adoption thread. GL!

yes, it just sitting and grrr. it make alot of"chocolate cake" a day. very smelly.
*
The more yer 've to acclimatise them to more human interaction and affection.

Start with feeding them while being handled with your fingers from outside the cage (long vege / grass food), their greedy appetite will eventually let them stand up to smell and start biting.

Once they have an idea of you [human] will bring food and feed them, the "wheek wheek wheek" sound will develop, meaning being happy, and 'feed me feeding time', most of the time specially meant for humans...
Have your sound, scent, and presence associated with the food, slowly introduce to them.

Now you put them on your palm, facing inwards to you.
Feed them their favourite food (small fruit slices, grass, or finger food like vege), while they get used munching on your palm.
After 2nd day, they'll start greeting you exactly the time of your feeding hour - just let them know your arrival when you approach their habitat area, to avoid startling them.

_

And, to avoid smelly, keep their droppings dry (best fertilizer), while letting other liquids further sink and be channeled away. No liquid, no smell.

_

As for bathing, slowly introduce them to warm water in a tub.
Let them run around in a big tub with water just their feet length (an inch).
Later, put them in a tall enough pale (tong) with warm water, like sauna. this time water level high enough, while the piggies will stand up to the sides. Never leave supervision.
Take them out, give them their good shampoo (within 30 - 60 seconds), scrub the nails too.
Avoid any water to the Nose and Ears area, simply use cloth to wipe and clean them (i.e. ear wax).
Put them back into the hot water tub, they should be enjoying it, if not, the 2nd time.

Recommended to wash them before noon time, pick a hot sunny day.
You can later tower dry them, leave them to munch on the grass land, better if in groups.
They should dry themselves within 2 hours while grinding grass, which u'll find their fur have become all dried standing, making them look PUFFY and Round at best!

hehehe... fertilizer making machines...

Pending your guinea-piggies' size (age), you can choose to feed them controlled amount 2 to 3 times a day (every8 or 12 hours).

Modify the fish food dispenser, it should dispense a controlled [quantity] amount every 8 or 12 hours. Haven't seen a proper good one selling in m'sia yet...

Mainly, even humans strive for good health and longevity, so should your snuffles.
They keep eating and no exercise, will become very round and fat... which actually shortens their lifespan...

GPs absort vitamins best at night, i.e. fresh organic fruits / vegies / grass.

BUT pending M'sian weather, and where you house your GPs.
If it is very hot during the day, you can reverse the order,
(i)
which provides Fresh Vegetables during the day, keep them having moist organic food to 'tahan' our extremely humid (air is full of condensed water) and hot weather... at least until evenings. Look at your piggies' size, you can gauge how much to provide, just enough to last thru the 8 or 12 hours (about 2/3 their body size volume of fresh food when compacted).
(ii)
At night, you can add in most of the mix: Complete Food + GP Cobayes Pellets + Granule, nuts, organic mix. The favourites will be munched away, and the smaller granules and tid-bits will last next day. Alfalfa would be supplementary, every week or 2 weekly. Fresh hay anytime, dried hay can be recycled, they love to hide and as bedding. (For total pellet mix volume, about 1/2 the size of each piggy).

For those having young piggies, recommended at least feed 3 alternate times, with both mixes available (vege, fruits, grass, and the pellets).

Lots of room, and take them out at least an hour a day for outdoor, to run about (in your hands or on your furniture is not counted) for exercise.
To keep them fat and round instead of lean and healthy, simply add more food.

Hey Shafixxx,
where you found 'em? Hiding in corners, or under furnitures?

Was wondering if you used their favorite food bowl or food preparation sound, or your feeding whistle / sound, would they recognize it yet, and come out from hiding?

Interested to know!

Its always a bad idea to put 2 or more males together if theres females around. Both will eventually fight for mating rights and so on. However, 1 male with multiple females should be okay. Only the consequences of that would be too many pregnant GPs and litters later on.

The best should be ONE neutered male with several females.
*
Well said. rclxms.gif

Even both males raised from babies will fight once forbidden fruits are introduced (sexy gurlfren)...

Fights can be bloody, scarring, fatal. The weaker one will be deprived of sleeping spot, food, water, and will eventually die.

Simply the scent, sound, and especially the teeth chattering will be seconds away from a fight... that scent experience will always be remembered, no such thing as 'truce' or 'rights to parley', especially when both thinks they are the alpha dominant one, forever will become enemies and continue fighting.

Only 1 alpha male allowed in the pact, inborn, natural.

lol, reason for nightclubs and drinking places no guns no nuclear weapons allowed and always full of bodyguards

i bought a baby abby few days ago, both of their bottom body looks dirty.Does the stains can be eliminate?

i havent try to bath them cause the seller says "while their age below 3 months will looks abit messy and dirty"

does the statement above true?
*
The farm-breeders usually wants to minimize a shock, like bathing the baby-GPs under 2 months old.
More shock if they use "blow-dryer" to dry the GPs... die faster LoL.

If the baby play-pen (with mommy) is well designed, and soft flooring (messed holed floors) is used, the pee-poo should be within hygiene standards.
Even after 2 months, the babies should smell like just born, the baby smell, very clean, and often licked cleaned by the parents (papapig introduced and remove within supervision time).

If you got them too young (irresponsible breeder sellers... ), you can wipe clean their feet with warm cotton makeup remover pads. Or get a helper to dip their small legs in warm water to clean (including the dirt under the nails).
To nib the nails, you can wait until the 3rd month onwards for the first 1mm cut, watch where the pink line is, where the blood vessels ends... erm... don't cut off their fingers..... a lot of freshmeat is attached to the nail.

Most importantly how the breeder segregate them, is it scientific, systematic, lineage tree, etc. Are there mites, bacteria, or other diseases? Like dogs, the first 2 months baby GPs are weak while building up their immune system. Some farms can have Zerg-Infestation so as that ALL their incubation chambers are contaminated; Your seeing the vet bill maybe more expensive than you GP price... furthermore, your entire house also gets the pandemic, all pet family die together of epidemic infectious diseases...

That statement is false as they won't individually have qualified personnels and take the risk to bath them if they are mass breeding general piggies.
False that you can compare to many of the sellers even in M'sia, their baby piggies and photos are clean, adorable, all taken (shot) anytime from any of the weeks 1 - 8 - 12.
However, it is a simple thing to solve and clean.

Perhaps a reference to "How to pick a GP, What to look for from their supplier, What's their stand on Responsible Breeder / Etiquette, etc." can be the questions to start asking from.

QUOTE(yingtsze @ Aug 15 2010, 02:19 PM)
does any know about pregnancy toxemia?
*
Excerpt from: Dr. Ron Hines DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) PhD 30+ years practice, Online Consultation paid services.

Guinea-Pig Pregnancy Toxemia and Ketosis:

Stillbirths and abortions in guinea pigs are most often associated with pregnancy toxemia or ketosis. Ketosis is also a common condition in human beings and cattle. It occurs when the body burns a large amount of fat in response to inadequate levels of blood glucose or accessible liver glycogen.

Two factors are most responsible for this condition in guinea pigs, (I) inadequate feeding during late pregnancy, and, (II) mothers that were too fat to begin with. There are several factors that can cause pigs to not consume adequate nutrients late in pregnancy and shortly after birth. These are inadequate food portions, infections of the breasts (mastitis), failure of the uterus to adequately cleanse after birth (metritis) and dehydration. Genetic susceptibility of certain strains of guinea pig also contributes to the disease. Pregnancy Toxemia or Ketosis is most common during a sow’s first or second pregnancy

Signs of the disease appear suddenly and progress rapidly. The pig stops eating and drinking and quickly becomes dehydrated. Stool may become mucoid or mucus-covered. As the disease progresses she will become weak, develop labored breathing and often die in two to five days. These guinea pigs are hypoglycemic, that is, their blood sugar (glucose) is abnormally low (less than 60mg/dl). Their normally basic (alkaline) urine becomes more acidic (normal urine pH is 9). Due to derangement in metabolism their livers produce excess acetoacetic acid, acetone and B-hydroxybutyric acid (Ketone bodies). Proteins and ketones are also spilled into the urine. All this can be quickly detected with urine chemistry check strips and a few drops of urine.

There is no consistently effective treatment for this disease so prevention is the key. Avoid obesity as well as stress during pregnancy. Do not breed guinea pigs that are too young or too old.

Be sure that your pigs do not have borderline vitamin C deficiencies. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) requirement increases during gestation and it is thought that borderline deficiencies in ascorbic acid contribute to a high level of abortions and stillbirths in a colony.

The signs of scurvy in guinea pigs are initially vague (nonspecific). They include, anorexia (lack of appetite), rough hair coat, listlessness, weakness and subcutaneous hemorrhages. Later, joint enlargement and painful joints may occur. Guinea pigs with scurvy often grinding their teeth and are generally sore. They resent handling. Remember vitamin C breaks down rapidly, especially from the effects of heat, moisture and light. So do not keep guinea pig chow for over two months. Green peppers, kale and cabbage are rich in vitamin C. If you are supplementing your water with vitamin C, it must be changed daily since it quickly hydrolyzes. Some breeders give 10mg vitamin C orally per day during pregnancy. In poorly managed colonies bacterial infections with streptococcus, bordatella and pasteurella can increase the incidence of stillbirths and abortions.

A maternity ward environment for the sow + your loving attention: you've gotta know your pig, vice versa.
Fixed feeding time and controlled amount
Well balanced diet, i.e. Fresh Greens, Fresh Fruits, Complete Food (i.e. Hagen), Granules Mix, GP Pellets, Fresh Grass, Hay all the time, basic pellets mix, controlled treads, 1-2 weekly alfalfa once, natural food.

But do note: There will still be risks for every 1 out of 5 deliveries overall statistics. Remember to keep your hereditary (bloodline) profile, and detailed pictures of both parents, and further up.

Except from Cavy Spirit (San Mateo, California, USA) - GP rescue & adoption home:

"... There is about a 25% chance that something will go wrong, a complication will arise. A vet may be needed. You may lose the sow. You may lose all the babies.

How many personal stories would you like to read? Think it won't happen to you? Betty shortly after delivery. The baby on the left didn't make it. It's a total gamble. Are you willing to risk the life of your pet sow and any unborn babies? That is EXACTLY what you would be doing by breeding her. Make no mistake about it. Yes, you will read that there are many pregnancies and deliveries that happen just fine. But, there are many that don't. Wilma's tragic birth. Phoenix on the left. Stillborn on the right. See Phoenix' story on the Adoptables page under Special Needs Piggie It is a RISK. A GAMBLE. Roll the dice. Place your bets. AND, if something does goes wrong, are you educated enough on the symptoms to know what to look for? Are you willing to spend the money (and it can be VERY SIGNIFICANT) if something happens? Do you know about the special requirements of a pregnant sow?

We were handed a vet bill of $958 for saving a sow with a prolapsed uterus after delivery. Emergency surgery. We have had a number of pregnancy complications requiring emergency vet care and the associated bills.

Heartbreaking stories abound everywhere. Don't be a statistic and don't learn the hard way--at the expense of your animal's life."

Also, read more about "Responsible Breeders". - Best to import directly from specialists, you get to avoid all the risks, it's cheaper, and they have scientific & systematic facilities.

MUST READ : Daftar Obat-obatan yang Berbahaya Bagi GP!
Posted: August 11, 2010 by Guinea Pigs Lover in Vets dan Pengobatan
0

amoxicillin (Clavamox)
  ampicillin
  bacitracin
  cefadroxil
  cephalexin * (derivative: Cefadroxil)
  cephalosporins
  cephazolin
  chlortetracycline
  clindamycin
  dihydrostreptomycin
  erythromycin
  lincomycin
  oxytetracycline
  penicillin
  streptomycin

*
aiyo bos... never give your mini piggy Human medications...
Guinea Pigs are 1,000x times more susceptible to chemical substances, hence the best "laboratory test subjects" after where they became commercial pets.

Our vets here already having a hard time diluting western medicinal mix (from Horse, Dog sizes) down to treat small animals... and it can sometimes still proof fatal. If you give human medicine to try and find out... prob gonna see them over at The Rainbow Bridge (pet loss heaven)...

Just goto a local vet, having their western formulas doesn't make us a full practitioner DVM.

those r older piggy liao.. last time i ask they say 2 year old de.. order by customer , imported from Netherlands with cert and stuff..
*
hmmm... don't refer to it as a particular place,
but honestly, try not to buy 1 - 2 years old piggies unless the previous owner handles them with Human Personal Care, that will make the Zhu-Zhus very comfortable and sociable with humans (your guest, friends or corporate clients...) and often seek attention, cuddle, licks, or performs shows with the owner.

If they have been unable to sell for 1 - 2 years, and not much attention given to EACH individual piggy [training] / or not from a previous close-to-piggy owner... will be very hard to build that up. Most crucial months will be from the 1st - 3rd months (the public may come across baby piggies below 3 - 5 weeks old... not a healthy time to sell them at their weakest) where they learn and get to know their owners.

And all of 'em being mixed together male+females different age, breed, sizes... all in a glass window/ box/ cage... not so encouraging lor...

Simply pick one up, put it in your palm, see it's reaction. Does it claw, or cooperate? Looks into you or aloof? A savage or understands? etc. Easy to tell.

No worries boss, just hand feed him for first 2 - 3 days, select those soft fresh vegetables and fruits (less watery type), while crush the pellets into smaller bites.

In general, and for your piggy's age, they should grow back about 0.3 to 0.5mm every day. Within a week you won't see a difference.

Keep something easy for them to chew their teeth on, especially the inner-lower 2 teeth lol, those anvil stones for sharpening works best.

Today,  just took back home my 1st Texel GP.  Its a male cutie.

Had long discussion with the seller, he told me he went to Banting farm there and pick his stocks, the condition of the GPs there approx 1,000+ and most of them are in terrible condition.  I found got skin problem  on this GP, according to him, this is already consider better after he had treated it for 2 weeks, there are some even worst than that.

According to him, in that farm has Teddy Bear breed, and Satin Himalayan, but very very limited stocks.  The owner is trying to breed more to fulfill the market needs.  But the farm owner doesn't really knows the breed well.  So buyer beware when you choose the breed.

Besides the pandemic in their farm... they can't afford to contain nor tackle it in their own farm - it can only get worst unless rebuild the entire facility properly.

Exactly the point... they breed cuys for a living but doesn't know the right way nor do they have the a system, nor proper facilities... ... sigh.

If using wire base cage, you need to put another layer of plastic netting to prevent their foots get stuck in between the wired. Also can use bathroom plastic mat as base layer too.

See the picture of the base.

We'll upload a few more photos later from our library, especially to note two more brands from Italy and Japan: Really ease on the foot for GPs, non-toxic can't be chewed, all weather conditions, fast and easy to clean.

... got specially designed products since a year ago... no one bother to publish 'em, seems like tis' another busy good year!

Actually the picture you shown above, the base hole is too big for GPs' feet too.  Still need to put a layer of netting on top of it.  Those base are designed for rabbit if I am not mistaken.

Yupper you are right: the lower one illustrated is Japan's Marukan... selling rm700 in Malaysia... and was designed for rabbits, bad for piggie's foot.
There's a thin floor mat available, meant to work as the photo to be layered on top of good flooring.

Good ole Italy's Marchioro somehow no one importing for years, although they got new GP cages this year.
Anyway, solved the costing issue already working with factories where it's way cheaper, and economies of scale production with a large int'l market. Hope M'sia will be enjoying the more affordable costings very soon.

There's new flooring design for GPs, but need to find someone to publish it, photos been sitting for a year...
