I think you should read more Panerai's history.
In summary, no, no special technology in the watch. Only hour and minute.
Why so expensive?
People like it, demand > supply.

I know it's almost impossible to find one at the moment.... I just lost two expensive watches and now still in recovery mode!

I know it's possible to get the new base models around 12k++.

Yeah... I've been searching in Mudah.my also. Found one PAM176 and was offered RM14.5k!

The BNIB PAM000 cost USD3800 which is around RM12k!

177 no idea, can always choose to deal in Richment. I would!
