Just for info only.

Yesterday I watched Avatar BD on my Pana BD60.

1st.loading was very slow compared to other BDs. After that, it plays smoothly and perfectly without any issue. My BD60 version is 1.7, and
I didn't upgrade the firmware since I bought it 6 months ago.

About the 25Hz filter, even tho I don't have a high-end sub, I would agree with you guys that the filtering should not be applied.

I'm no expert in this, but I felt that the bass for Avatar is OK for me. I set my sub and AVR crossover at 100 Hz. My sub has a lowest setting at 50 Hz.

Should I set the sub at 50 Hz?
What scenes in Avatar can I experience the lowest bass?

I guess I will email fox studio soon, if not, some ppl will say me NATO sweat.gif I bet Yonggoh should do the same since he is so disagreed the filter thingy.
Like I said, the more complaint or appeals the better. Even Sub manufacturer should write something to them too...

Yeah, this Avatar disc takes up more time to load than any other BD on the Panny BD60. I didn't update the firmware either. Eventhough, the LFE is not below 25Hz but still can feel the massive bass from the explosion, tree tumbling down & even the giant creature flapping its wings carry incredible bass weight thumbup.gif . However, it is the overall sound mixed that is effortlessly balanced until it can over-shadow this 25Hz filtering during the movie.....

Since fox put the 25hz filter on Avatar blu ray, I wonder how is the japan version would be. Heard that the japan version of a particular movie is sometimes is better than their US counterpart in PQ and AQ. Maybe the 25hz filter wasn't apply on the japan version.hmmmmm hmm.gif

I watched the mkv version with DTS5.1 Pretty good for a 10G file. The dynamic is amazing. Technology really advance.

Instead of 25hz filter issue, I think the problem is more to some area how the sound effect was mixed. The falling tree is a great example where the sound effect was not represented by the tree falling impact on the video. Is not easy I guess to provide such a dramatic yet emotional for that scene. Is like a choice of whether to give an "emotional" impact of a "loud" impact. I guess JC chose emotional. But abit of sound effect there shouldn't harm the emotional impact. The floor/land vibration was not heard, thats all he needs to add.

Some areas are challenging. Sound engineer had lots of challenge to mix these areas of verbal and war effect. Very complicated.

But overall, sound very good. even for just a DTS5.1 I haven't get the BD yet until I finish watching all these MKV. I'm planning to get one when I'm in US instead. Lets see how. smile.gif

note sarcasm smile.gif

actually tho many are aware of a "superior" version perhaps being released in the future...

the 5* AP/PQ and the much hype surrounding this release has tempted many (including myself)

I'm not THAT rich...i still flog off my older HT equipment, BD titles, PS3 games when i'm done with em so i can finance future purchases...

Yesterday went to buy the Avatar BD, found that this movie is THX Certified, but from what I know is THX Certified movie shouldn't apply any filter for the low frequency, if let say the studio did apply the filter, will THX certify this movie since they have done something on the audio parts?

I tested the THX Amazing Life Trailer (after Avater end credits). Cranked it up to -10dB.....It is slightly cleaner than the one found in Indy Jones (probably due to lossless?) And as usual..... WOW! shocking.gif

For those who had auditioned this part in my HT room, you guys should come again and feel the difference. The amount of air being shifted is beyond words... Ok, I might have exaggerated it. It is AWESOME!

Just curious.

I read that the Avatar BD comes in a set of DVD and BD together. Has anyone of you tested the sound quality of the DVD? Was the sub 25Hz sound being capped?

I do inderstand the disappoint by hardcore about those LFE missing, but that itself do not represent a loss of quality in the audio department.
*
I would consider it a loss of quality with regard to not getting 100% of the soundtrack. If the soundtrack was mixed with sub 25Hz signals then I would like the disc to contain that information.

I'm still curious why they would release those BD with a 25Hz filter.

Careful not to damage your sub by causing it to bottom out. Then again, if damaged then gives you excuse to buy new sub tongue.gif

after watching avatar, i feel that the bass is strongly lacking compare to ironman. even ironman's fiery jet from his foot and the jericho missile scene has deeper and stronger bass than those missiles hitting the mother tree in avatar.

IMO, avatar, being a THX film, failed the LFE test.

I came across THIS PAGE.

Quote: " ..THX Balanced Bass-line breaks the mold of traditional subwoofer designs—getting the sub out of the big box. The technology places small, micro-precision woofers face-to-face, arranged in balanced pairs. This approach force cancel vibrations, ensuring deep low frequency performance without vibrations discoloring soundtracks or intruding into adjacent rooms. "

The above description is meant for the new line of subwoofer design concept in order to reduce vibration. It seems that THX aims to reduce that effect deliberately.

Does that explain why the Avatar has a cap in-placed instead of other non-Thx rated disc?

Just curious.
