Added on February 24, 2007, 7:09 amcan we use fins to snorkel in redang???

Can but make sure you know to use fin.
Coz if u can't control the fin very well, u may kill the coral using the fin while u snorkeling.
Personally, I don't encourage people snorkeling using fin.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Forget about using flippers when swimming or snorkelling at beach resorts here.

State authorities have banned the use of flippers in a bid to protect corals especially in the coastal waters off Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the state exco decided on the ban, which applies in coastal waters off all islands in the state.

However, it would not cover divers, he said.

"People who use flippers sometimes trample on the corals," Idris told newsmen after chairing the exco meeting at Wisma Darul Iman here yesterday.

"This is especially true for those learning how to swim and staying afloat."

Speaking from personal experience, Idris said he faced difficulties in balancing in the water when he first took up the activity two years ago.

He hoped resort operators would abide by the directive, which would be issued in about a week.

"I know some of them earn money by renting out flippers to tourists, but we have to protect the corals," he said.

Idris said the state government had not decided on the action to be taken against those who flout the ruling.

Malaysia Nature Society Parks and Special projects head Andrew Sebastian said it was a good move.

However, he hoped there would be stricter enforcement on regulations in marine parks against the gathering of corals and shells.

"Although this is banned, tourists are still doing it," he said.

thank you for the info. Terengganu really shallow minded.

Ban all flippers wont protect the coral.

then in your opinion, how to protect coral?
for me, this is one of the way. Do you know how long its take for coral to grow?
not every tourist have the awareness to protect the coral.

Mixed opinion about this action. I did see some people standing on the coral sometimes, by banning the flippers, they probably would not dare to do that. But flipper help so much in snorkelling, especially the rough sea!

Did you see Phuket, Pulau Si Padan, Maldives, Mauritus and the most famous great barrier reefs ban flippers.?

If you bring the tourist to snork at a place higher than 6-7ft (above head level), no body will step on the coral.

BTW 10 ways to preserve corals :-

# Conserve water: The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater will pollute our oceans.
# Help reduce pollution: Walk, bike or ride the bus. Fossil fuel emissions from cars and industry raise lead to ocean warming which causes mass-bleaching of corals and can lead to widespread destruction of reefs.
# Use only ecological or organic fertilizers: Although you may live thousands of miles from a coral reef ecosystem, these products flow into the water system, pollute the ocean, and can harm coral reefs and marine life.
# Dispose of your trash properly: Don't leave unwanted fishing lines or nets in the water or on the beach. Any kind of litter pollutes the water and can harm the reef and the fish.
# Support reef-friendly businesses: Ask the fishing, boating, hotel, aquarium, dive or snorkeling operators how they protect the reef. Be sure they care for the living reef ecosystem and ask if the organization responsible is part of a coral reef ecosystem management effort.
# Plant a tree: Trees reduce runoff into the oceans. You will also contribute to reversing the warming of our planet and the rising temperatures of our oceans.
# Practice safe and responsible diving and snorkeling: Do not touch the reef or anchor your boat on the reef. Contact with the coral will damage the delicate coral animals, and anchoring on the reef can kill it, so look for sandy bottom or use moorings if available.
# Volunteer for a coral reef cleanup: You don't live near a coral reef? Then do what many people do with their vacation: visit a coral reef. Spend an afternoon enjoying the beauty of one of the most diverse ecosystems on the Earth.
# Contact your government representatives: Demand they take action to protect coral reefs, stop sewage pollution of our oceans, expand marine protected areas and take steps to reverse global warming.
# Spread the word: Remember your own excitement at learning how important the planet's coral reefs are to us and the intricate global ecosystem.

Greeting guys smile.gif

I and a group of friends which around 11 pax thinking of spending a holiday at Pulau Redang. After the discussion and enquiries, they opted for Laguna Resort which around RM650 /pax which is over budget for most of us as we're just non-working students.

I found a cheaper resort which is Redang Bay Resort, http://www.redangbay.com.my/

Wonder if anyone been there and to share the experience? unsure.gif

it's a 2 star resort. so you can't expect too much.
you get what you pay.
no frill, only basitc things such as cupboard, bed, aircon & hot shower but no tv in room.
btw, they got a small swimming pool.

try Readang Beach Resort, I heard from my friend they got semi-D
and their compliment about the facilities and room condition is good

Icic... thanks for ur feedback. Well, we're just looking for a vacation at Pulau Redang, as long as we get there.. these 'a bit low class' equipment, facilities and furnitures wouldn't spoil the fun? What's ur opinion? Anyway, is the stuff really old there and some even broken? unsure.gif

We check Redang Beach Resort, just top up a few bucks and we can get Laguna. That's why not under our consideration anymore sweat.gif

the time i went, Redang Bay Resort is the cheapest, so I and my friend choose Redang Bay Resort.
We spent most of the time at the beach, swimming pool or go snorkeling. Only in room to take a nap after snorkeling or at night.
Meals served on time and their staffs are friendly too.
well, if you just want to have a place to sleep and rest. go for it.
don't demand too much.
