1 cm per mth = 12 cm per year or about 4.7+inch Per year is that too fast ? Even my sulcata or Aldabra I won't let them grow that fast !!

Wonder how smooth are their carapace now with 4.7+inch per year !! If smooth ok lah if not watch out maybe diet or something else incorrect somewhere down the line !! - just re-read n u mention pyramid already - pls modify diet or enclosure setup !!

Cheers sam

I don't know the standard growth rate for cherry but my first- born/ hatch mid 2008 and they will be 3+ years old now average about 8 inch ( 7-9 inch ) average growth is about slightly less than 2" per year !!

N all as smooth as can be !!

Cheers

For the aldabra, the shell is still smooth, i will try to reduce its food intake,  i read somewhere that they grow incredidly fast until ard 1 feet before the growth slow down

I duno y the cherryhead start to pyramid, i think the humidity is not enough, now i mist them everyday, but they grow slow
*
Aldabra will remain to grow fast for at least untill 24 " !!

I got a hatchling in 2007 and he is 17.5 inch now ( So average not quite 3 inch per year ) I aim my hatchlings tortoise to grow at most 3 inch per year , some less ( depending on sp ) !!

cheers

I heard that overfeeding can cause pyramiding... how do u guys determine the correct amount to feed ur torts..

thanks
*
No standard answer - Stress , sickness , "shed mode" , average enclosure temperature , pre lay , age .....etc all can and will affect amount eaten !! Quality of feed is the most important beside humidity(what most say lately) Bla Bla Bla .........etc

No end to this , you be the judge !!

Different species according to origin ie Grassland/Desert , Tropical ....... All need slightly modified diet , frequency , amount for each !!

Cheers

Jus wondering, any of u guys starve the tort for 1 or 2 days in a week?
Or feed everyday ?
*
Some months ie pre-breeding , rainy days I skip their meals or feed sparingly (20-30% of usual meal) so as to make them more active (looking around for mate/meal )

Hatchlings to yearlings I skip a day per week !!

Yearlings to adult (just before ready to breed about 4 meals a week )

Breeding adults I feed at most 3 times a week (big hearty meal - "eat till vomit kind" LOL )

Cheers

I really have to take my hat off to you guys! Super pretty tortoise! Nice collection man, an eye opener for me.

Would like to know, do you guys keep different breed in the same enclosure? As in, they live, eat & sleep together?

Thanks and cheers!
*
Depends !! As each has slightly different needs .

WC I would never try for just bought straight into my established group !!

If CB by self I will mix them for ease of rearing - as all needs basically the same !! And separating them as size , aggressive-ness become a problem !!

Cheers

Understood and thanks bro..
So size is a factor right?
Do you reckon if it's ok to house a sulcata together with either leopard or ST?
Also, do you recommend to deworm all tortoises?
*
Leopard and ST are more prone to RNS so keep them warmer than say Sulcata (adapted to our climate ie CB and raised locally )

Assume both at 5 years of age - A male Sulcata at 15 inches easily crush a male ST at about 6 or 7 inch !! Beside an adult Sulcata is quite aggressive (some may be tame )

Usually I deworm mine once a year unless I see massive load in poo !!

Cheers

It would be nice if W.M has any places that breed tortoises of all kinds. Love to see one with my own eyes.

p/s: the place I know is so far away......
*
Tortoise itself is a "sensitive issue " in our country , more some are protected international-ly.

EVEN if W.M. has breeders (which I know there are a few ) no-one in their right mind will allow visitation - I wont !!

Cheers
