they are infant size bout 3-4 inch in size
*
Depending on species concerned 3-4 inch could be adult size already !!

And for how long will they be without food for ??

----------------------------------------

If well-fed and healthy for a 3-4 inch RES I dont see any harm done to them even if without food for a week or so !! But one could always throw some guppies or similar fish in for them to snack on while owner away !!

Sam actually asking what is your turtle species. From there only we can start to answer your questions....

Thanks But some ppl just dont care - If not insufficient knowledge can post picture so others can help identify ?

Like I posted before some can be adult size already at 3-4 inch (USA has a 4 inch rule on some species when sales locally - still have ka ? )

QUOTE
A secret oasis for the world's most endangered turtles
The Turtle Conservancy, tucked in the foothills of Ventura County, cares for species ravaged by habitat loss, wildfires, hunting and black markets. Its latest project: breeding the rare ploughshare tortoise.
June 05, 2011|By Louis Sahagun, Los Angeles Times
When it comes to caring for the world's rarest cold-blooded animals, few places match the pampering and security provided to hundreds of critically endangered turtles and tortoises at a secret compound in the foothills of Los Padres National Forest.

In paddocks and aquariums protected by surveillance cameras and electric wire, Okinawa leaf turtles feast on silkworms and mulberries in a temperature-controlled greenhouse. Nest-building Burmese black mountain tortoises relax in piles of freshly cut oak, sycamore and bamboo. Forest-dwelling impressed tortoises dine exclusively on organically grown oyster mushrooms. Philippine pond turtles spend the night in snug tunnels made of cork bark.

Whats your thoughts !!

If only our departments not come up with so much .........etc We could breed truck-load of them to get them off the endangered list LOL

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here in Asia they ask WWF , TRAFFIC ........ to put pressure on our government to regulate , confiscate at entry point (then they take and breed legally - and be heros )

yeah, my thoughts exactly.

and under the new laws, people like us who had been breeding for years are now criminals, while those people that had done absolutely nothing other than preaching and campaigning (WWF, Sahabat Alam) are heroes. and perhilitan is still dumb and more concerned on internal politics and some good media rep but had utterly failed in recognizing the real problem.
ko tak sembahyang raya ke bro?

We cant even legalised our own pets(some / certain species) !! What more can we do and its rather cramp in our closet/cupboard !!

Its good to have laws BUT our entry points are just too easily breached - smuggled stuff easily flood our small markets !!

With or without permit, it is still illegal and thus, the fine part actually doesn't bother me much.

Two words for them: Thank you notworthy.gif , and Appreciate! thumbup.gif

Do they really confiscate and breed them? Hope they don't do otherwise. ohmy.gif
*
Yes , they will confiscate them (no doubt about that ) What then after that - send them back to country of origin - thats what they say ?

As for breeding them NOT LOCALLY by our department - they dont even know half the species involved let alone diet , house or breed them !!

How many sip thru back into the black market again ? I dont have figure or proof but I know there are !!

I found this tortoise crossing a busy road near a residential area today while driving to a friends house.

It looks quite healthy as it was moving about, but what do i know, I'm not an expert. Some of the tortoise's shell looks really dry and has slight cracks.

For now, the tortoise is in a big sink behind my house in a shaded area. I gave him a quick bath and gave him some lettuce but he doesn't seem to eat .

I have no idea what species it is and how to care for it. I hope all the tortoise sifus out there can help me IDENTIFY what species this tortoise is.  icon_question.gif

user posted image

Surface crack from unknown cause - from picture I would say leave it as it seems healthy as there's new growth( white line) on carapace near neck !! Unless it's shell rot and crack will worsen then look up a vet to treat it !!

Cheers

Being thinking could this guy be from some " set free " chinese temple ritual ?

What kind of ritual is that? is there such a thing?
*
Use your nose - if the scar / crack smell bad , its rot !!

I dont go temple so dont ask me - But there is such an activity especially during Vesak/Wesak day !!

QUOTE(tekwei98 @ Sep 9 2011, 03:31 PM)
I need help.

Bought my son 2 tortoise as pet. one of them grows. the other one doesn;t. i brought back to the pet shop, the guy says could be some infection. this little tortoise doesnt eat, hardly moves and there seems to be a layer of film covering both eyes.

The pet shop guys recommends to bask the tortoise under the sun daily for 15 mins. been doing that for weeks. no improvement. The shell is getting softer.

I dont want this poor guy to go away. Can somebody suggests to me some remedy please?

Thanks.
*
Too many unknown !! Cant reply directly

Maybe a close up picture of patient or the eye area ?
-------------------

Can only suggest to bring to Vet (which stupid pet shop guy think the sun is a cure all remedy) for now !!

Cheers

Oh, my tortoise don't have shell rote then, the scar/crack doesn't smell  biggrin.gif

Added on September 10, 2011, 12:41 pm Is it tortoise or terrapin (Red Ear Slider).. Pics pls..
*
Good they dont smell - more sign its not rot !!

But from picture I can tell its age wound thus advice you to just let it be !!

This sp of tortoise like some animal protein as well - dog/cat food(both dry or wet) , worms , meat mince ....etc

Another thing to watch out for is its poo - worms ? But if not in massive load just let it be !!

Cheers
-----------------------
As for the other guy/question - Dont even know the sp how to treat !! - But most likely RES

P/s can you take a picture of the underside especially the tail part ( so so curious about its sex - I guess Female )

Thanks SAMPERTH, really appreciate it. I'm happy to know his healthy..
Just to let you know that I've been feeding it with some papaya added with some calcium supplement that i already been using for my leopard gecko, as you said that this tortoise like some protein, i offered him to freshly killed crickets but he only ate one..

Is the calcium supplement necessary for tortoise?
Just calcium OR calcium+D3 ?

SAMPERTH, you want picture of my tortoise underside or tekwei98's RES underside??
*

Calcium is important to all , as for d3 or not will depends on whether it has access to unfiltered sunlight or not !!

I would love to see the elongata's thanks

The tortoise has access to direct sunlight - so calcium+D3 OR calcium only ?  hmm.gif
Will upload the picture of the tortoise underside soon  smile.gif

Added on September 11, 2011, 4:27 pmI know anchovy is high in protein, but is it high in calcium too?  hmm.gif
I'm just using calcium+D3 supplement by ExoTerra..

Sun will make the skin produce Vitamin D3 thus if access to sun few hours a week , feed pure Calcium If not Vitamin enriched with D3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D3

QUOTE(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D3)
7-Dehydrocholesterol is the precursor of vitamin D3 and forms cholecalciferol only after isomerization due to UV radiation exposure from the sun or artificial sources such as tanning machines.

thanx alot...will see a vet soon

They are a more sensitive sp when compared to other sp - they have special needs (beside diet )

Come with license - I wonder , or just receipt saying where you got it from ? This local sp has no CITES quota since so many years already !! CB specimen are rare and will be tag with high price !!

-----------------------------------------------

If true CB specimen you wont need to feed them Oyster mushroom as bulk of diet - can be trained to take many other kind of food !!

Heres one of mine posing picture with other sp of the genus Manouria
