I've given up on CS. Players know every corner, noobs that come in get wasted too quickly.

I've also given up on L4D2. I bought a copy in Malaysia but do you know if you're outside the SE asia region it won't work? Steam will report an error because it is region locked. So frustrating, and they won't refund my money.

Ars Technica Preview of Steam for Mac (Malaysian pun not intended)
Beta signup is closed, but Half Life 2, CS, Portal and Left 4 Dead 2 will be on. The only other third party publisher that's getting on so far is Tripwire Interactive (Killing Floor, Red Orchestra).

Tried CS Source at 2560x1600 resolution last night on a 9400M. All settings at High as recommended by the game. The stress test result was 30FPS. Not ideal but playable. If I turn everything down to Low settings, I get about 34FPS. HL2 was very nice ass it's not as hectic as CSS. Hopefully the proper Mac versions will be optimised even more n give us better FPS. 35-40FPS would be great for me.

Pardon my ignorance, why you need to run at such a high res? How big is your screen? blink.gif

For Steam games, some key are region lock, you probably need to activate the key under your account first in Malaysia. Once activated and attached to your Steam account, you should be able to login everywhere and play the game. hmm.gif

I activated L4D2 and played it fine in Malaysia. It doesn't want to work here in Australia. I e-mailed steam support, they asked me to take it back and ask for a refund.

This should be made illegal. I wasn't aware it wouldn't work in a different country. They are denying the use of what you've bought legally. Frustrated.

This is called: <Regional lockout>. Due to the law, piracy rate and other reason in different country. At first I have the misconception if the game activated under your account it will work anywhere but this is not the case after some Google search!

This post sum it up very well: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...9&postcount=115

The poster Cheesenium encounter same problem like you, getting the game to work in MY and AU. (Suprisingly he is is also a LYN member. laugh.gif )
Seem like gifted game, or the online Steam store purchase copy will work in different region. But not the physical L4D2 box copy selling in Malaysia store!

Yep, thanks for the links, wish I knew about it before I bought the boxed copy. So in fact, buying online with steam has its benefits for valve games, and not the other way around!! I thought I would save myself some trouble buying the cd instead of downloading 8+ gigs.

Next time, they should make it really clear that it is region locked and it doesn't work outside the country.

Added on May 8, 2010, 2:18 pmBunkerer: you do realize that link you provided -- http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...d.php?t=1193985 is also me complaining in the official steam forums??!

lol.

LOL, what a small world... Actually, no need the CD after install (Afterall, Steam will connect Internet and check for updates). Just copy out your Steam folder and you can run it on any "PC" and no need installation. But the other PCs must have Internet for Steam authentication.

Valve Software first hinted at the arrival of Steam for Mac in early March through the release of a number of leaked teaser images. Steam is a very popular digital distribution system for PC games and will be making its debut on Mac on May 12th. Alongside the release of Steam will be several Valve gaming titles that have never previously been seen on the Mac. We've had some hands on time with the late beta, and here are some impressions.

PC users, or Mac owners with Boot Camp, will feel at home with the client. Its simple interface is mostly unchanged in the Mac beta version. Tabs indicating its essential functions line the top of its window, displaying the virtual "Store," your "Library" of games, patch and update "News," and "Community" functionality. Invitations from friends, as well as advertisements for games, still pop up with the speed and appearance of a Growl notification. In fact, the entire program is smooth and fast. It works and, most importantly, without a hitch.

The Mini. Tried CSS at 2560x1600, the Stress Test did 30FPS average with all settings on high. Playable but not very nice. I end up playing it in windowed mode at 1920x1200. Hopefully the Mac version will be better optimised n I can play at full 2560x1600.
