A kit lens of 18-105 or 18-55 will serve him well until he can fully utilize the aperture and the zoom distance of the lens. After that only consider 17-50, 24-70 or blah blah also still soon.

He suggested 17-55, at least that one is WAY more useful to get a kick start on photography compared to your 200mm F/2 SUGGESTION
