Well, I suppose if tadasu is really after the portability - he can still consider Micro Four Thirds camera. It's not exactly pocketable, but at least it's much lighter and the lenses are also smaller, you are more likely to carry around with you compare to the bulkier DSLR. More importantly, it doesn't shout "Hey look I am a nerd and I got a DSLR with me" - so it's more suitable for casual photography and parties

Quality wise. D40 was entry level DSLR, so image quality wise they aren't that much different. If you talk about cameras for more serious photography like D300S of course there's no match. Sorry misread 40D with D40 blush.gif

And gogo2 - I'm from Sony DSC-T20 tongue.gif

What are the difference between 14-42mm and 9-18mm lens?
Is it suitable to use a pancake 20mm f1.7 lens to shoot for landscape or protrait?
*
Basically, the lower the "mm" value, means the wider is it, and the higher the "mm" value means the further you "zoom".

You need to understand focal length

Normally, most of my photographer friend referring the flash is the saviour in a lowlight condition, provided the flash can bounce. My guess is that, for F1.7, you don't need those flash since it is big enough to compensate the lowlight-ness. Do correct me if I am wrong ya smile.gif
*
Depends on how low-light is it though

20mm f/1.7 surely isn't enough if you're in club / pub / karaoke room (even at ISO1600)

QUOTE(seaotter @ May 23 2010, 11:51 PM)
BTW do you feel the 17mm is good enough for lowlight?
*
Just like the f-stop figure suggests, it's somewhere between the kit zoom the 20mm f/1.7

Undecided as usual... 550D... GF1... E-P2... or stick with my teeny S90.

Ja.. I saw the poison as well.. Just that a "proper" dslr doesn't fit into my travel bag.

samurai1337: Can you survive with just the pancake all day?
*
Same answer as gogo2 tongue.gif I use 20mm pancake most of the time

I still use the 14-45mm lens for some specific purposes - events (it's too slow given the limited max aperture though) and outdoor landscape (pair it with Marumi DHG CPL filter)

one thing i like about this lens is it is very small... and the focal length goes into 18mm which is useful
in daily shooting.. enough to substitute the kit lens...

So I want to sell my kitlens... anyone interested? cheap cheap..

Some problem with chromatic aberration and vignetting, but otherwise a good and sharp lens

7-14mm lens review...

I really hope the price will drop to a more affordable level, given the competition from much more cheaper Olympus 9-18mm

Guys.. just curious how come not many folks here using GH1 or G2?
*
My 2 cents

GH1:
Because it resembles DSLR, and most of the m43 adopters prefer a range-finder styled camera. And it's relatively expensive, might as well go for Nikon D90 / Canon 550D. No doubt, it's image quality and high ISO handling is a class above other m43 cameras though tongue.gif

G2:
Same reason as GH1, and plus I'm not too sure if it's widely available yet

What about NX10?Is this still classified under M43 as it has 40% bigger sensor? hmm.gif

A cute samsung girl told me it's a mini DSLR  wub.gif
*
NX10 is not a Micro Four Thirds camera, and it's not a DSLR neither. It's under a generic category called "mirrorless/hybrid" camera

So far:

Mirrosless / Hybrid
- Micro Four Thirds (joint venture between Olympus and Panasonic)
- Sony NEX series
- Samsung NX series

Sony and Samsung are using APS-C sensor, and M43 is using a four-thirds sensor.

Oh i see...meaning that Both the Samsung NX and Sony NEX series are definitely better than M43 right?

NX10 is priced around the same as EOS 550D hmm.gif 550D still beats the NX10 and Sony NEX series right? blush.gif
*
I won't use the word "definitely", there's always good and bad in everything. For instance, a Nikon D3X definitely beats LX3 right? Yes if you're talking about image quality, but no if you're talking about portability and price.

One major advantage of m43 is the size of lenses will definitely be smaller than those of APS-C

GH1 must buy with 14-140mm which cost around RM6k. No one is going to spend that much on non-dSLR camera...
Well, G2 is still new and I agree with samurai that G2 is like dSLR and might as well go for real dSLR...
I pretty much disagree with your ISO handling for GH1. As for now, Olympus E-PL1 ISO handling is the best among all dSLR... unless I read wrongly tongue.gif
[fanboy mode]
Since this is m43 thread, the answer is m43 totally beat 550D, NX10 and NEX. The reason is because m43 ISO performance beat dSLR such as Nikon D3000
and from earlier review, NEX lenses have serious serious problem with abberation chromatic etc... while NX10 is totally not accepted by photography community
because a lot of people think Samsung only do washing machine...

really bor? OMG!!!! GH1 cheaper than E-PL1? How much is GH1 there?
*
Not sure about E-PL1 alone, but in general Olympus PEN cameras have better in-body processing engine that does noise reduction rather well, but Panny GH1 has a higher end sensor so it's supposed to do better in high ISO sensitivity, Dynamic range etc as well

The end result?

EP-2 at ISO3200
http://seattlesteve.files.wordpress.com/20...so3200stdnr.jpg

GH-1 at ISO3200
http://seattlesteve.files.wordpress.com/20.../gh1iso3200.jpg

It appears to me GH-1 output is somewhat cleaner.

Just when I thought 14-45mm is useless - it's not tongue.gif At 14mm I find it quite nice for extreme image like this. Post-processed with Adobe Lightroom

20mm f/1.7 is the lens for Micro Four Thirds camera! It's just a bit lonely now, the system needs more decent fast lenses, which I'm afraid we need to wait

A native-m43 remake of the even more poisonous Panasonic Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4 is welcome biggrin.gif

QUOTE(D@Ne @ Jun 1 2010, 01:27 PM)
Dear all,

I have been following through this thread since V1. I am now considering my purchase between EP-2 (Kit lens 14-42 w/ VF-2) and E-PL1 (Kit lens 14-24). Will also add Panny 20mm on top for my easy-travel needs as I travel 50% of my time.

If I were to go for E-PL1, I would still like to have VF-2 to go with it. With this, the price would be at not much difference with EP-2 package.

Appreciate some feedback here which is a better option? Thanks in advance.
*
Go for E-PL1 if you want - lighter body, built in flash
Go for E-P2 if you want - VF2 bundled, metal build, bigger LCD, support up to ISO6400

Dear Pro m 4/3 users.

i would like to ask a noobish question lol.
im using a gf1 with 20mm lens.
but i would like to get a nice good CHEAP zoom lens. somthing in the range of 15-150mm!
but the leica with adapter will cost about 5k.... and the panny HD recording lens costs about 3k...
haha are there any other more "affordable" alternatives!!
thanks!
*
I think the answer is no, especially you would need OIS for zoom lens on GF1

If you don't mind the range of 45-200mm, Panasonic has one native m43 lens

So expensive for a fisheye -____-

I guess Panasonic manufacturing cost is somewhat higher since it's based in Japan

Sample fisheye images
http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamer...ml#lensfisheye8

No doubt about the sharpness, but I still can't justify myself spending 800dollar for what I consider a specialty lens...
