AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Okay need three more goals. Then we need Chelsea to go on RAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE mode and clatter Bale taking him out. Then we need Malouda and everyone from Chelsea on a mass brawl, punching Gomes, Defoe, Bentley, Bassong etc...

I still expect Chelsea to win this match though.

But then it'll still be super tough for us even if they were to lose this match.

52'

Massive fight on the pitch now. Chelsea have been playing with anger and Lampard's tackle has instigated a battle.

well im not worried by our scoring run, every team will go trough a very good patch and will come at a pt where they draw blanks and score just 1 or 2.

as long as the lads keep on fighting and never give up, im sure we will get the goals we need to win matches.

its not a matter of hope, but a matter of time before we start scoring as usual.

the title race might still on but it still favour chelsea a bit because liverpool quite far behind the 4th spot and by the time they play chelsea, it could be 8 points gap with spurs ...

liverpool, if they have any dignity, will be professional and approach the chelsea game like any normal game. but too bad they don't have any, so it's really tough for us rite now. having said that, stoke is a better team than liverpool, so maybe they can do us a favour nx week. smile.gif

Macam this year je kita berpeluang to get no 19. They will lose more in terms of tv money and players might leave or opt not to play with them if they miss out on Champions League.

From Wiki:
Date of birth 26 February 1973 (1973-02-26) (age 37)
On 27 August 2007, Solskjær announced his retirement from football after failing to recover from a serious knee injury.[3] However, Solskjær remained at Old Trafford in a coaching role, as well as in an ambassadorial capacity. On 20 May 2008, Solskjær was announced as Manchester United's first full-time Reserve team manager since 2006, taking over from Brian McClair and Jimmy Ryan, who had filled the role in a caretaker capacity. He also supervises a training academy for young footballers in his home town of Kristiansund.

He was 34.. I think.

Why are we being heavily linked with Milner? Some say it's already a done deal? He was a decent player. Nothing special down the wings. This season he started more down the middle.. but I haven't seen much of him to comment much. But surely if we do go for someone in the middle, it has to be someone with the abilty of Scholes to ping passes around.

Perhaps Fergie is looking at someone who can provide the kind of versatility that can be useful at times? Milner can play on either flanks and has been doing well in the middle this season. He even played as fullback for Villa as well.

Another JOS in the making, just that he is technically much better than JOS biggrin.gif

I dunno. We have plenty of options out wide. We have 3 + Tosic, Obertan, Giggsy, Welbeck. But we could definitely use some help down the middle with Carrick being off form, Hargreaves affairs with nurses, and Giggsy and Scholes getting on. I'm just not sure Milner is the man for the kind of class we should be looking for in the middle(Scholes replacement, although maybe we still trust Anderson to grow into that role). He would be a very dependable player tough, much like Carrick and Valencia have been since their move here. We could do with another one of those. But he would be really expensive. 25m easily.

in current situation, i believe, liverfool want win against chelsea .. they in 6th place and player a game more than 7th, aston villa and point different is just one. if they choose to lose, they might be end their season at 7th, which is no european competition next season - bye to CL and Europa Cup.

we still have a hope then.

Agree somewhat with that. As a squad player, is fine I think. But given our uncertainty in that CM positions, we should do better.

If we beat Spurs and Chelsea only manage a draw against Stoke, I think the title is ours. Sunderland and Stoke are as good as any two games you'd want to close the season with the title on the line.

its 3 goals difference now..

It's first time in premier league history that potential winners had lost more then 5 games..

No la brotha... Blackburn did win the Premier League with 7 lost during season 94-95, a very bitter pill that time coz Man Utd lost it by just one point with superior goal differrent advantage somemore.

Since Liverpool wanna lose it to Chelsea and get themselve 7th place this season, let's hope Stoke punya Delap super long throw win them a couple of goal at Bridge next week.

As for Scholes, i like his celebration with the supporters. After Scholes scored from the header, he look back and seems wanna celerate with his teammates but at the end he turn back and decided to celebrate it with the supporters... what a moment rclxms.gif

That was with a league of more than 20 teams. Actually what I heard is that under the 38 matches season, no team that has lost more than 6 times have won the title. This season will be the first.

I won't put my money on Pools to beat Ski, it's clear that Rafa is determined to win the Europa to salvage his season (8 points behind Spurs with inferior GD, and with only 12 to play; I say they are out of 4th place competition already)

Let's hope Stoke can take advantage of their make shift back fours next weekend...

The most important is our own game against the high flying Spurs side. With yet another Saturday lunch time kickoff in UK and Chelsea playing on Sunday, we will have the chance to apply some pressures on Chelsea by getting a win.

there is logic if liverpool want to lose the chelsea game;-

first=no euro so they can concentrate on bpl(they really want it)
2nd=they are out of CL contention(Europa is not as big as CL and they might win it this year)
3rd=they might have new owner and they can concentrate on rebuilding their team(european is not a priority for building team)

so they have nothing to lose for the time being.

just my 2cent.

One key thing, PRIDE. Bet they don't want their A$$e$ kicked at the Kop by Chelsea, do they? Even a draw will be good enough for Man Utd to overtake Chelsea albeit they need to beat Stoke. biggrin.gif

Milner is decent but I dont think we need him. I would rather have Luka Modric! drool.gif

If he's willing to take a paycut or willing to stay on the bench, he should be given the chance to stay. He would be a good backup striker. He's not a djemba2.

Nope, next season they will let the Arsenal, Chelsea & Man City do a double on them so that these teams will have a 6 points head start in the league. Rafa also will rest Torres and Gerrard for all 36 games except against Utd so that they will not risk injuring themselves and miss the game.

What an experience, last night was. A friend came to my house last night, he was asking me out for teh tarik. He came around 9 plus. Score was still nil-nil yet I had this kind of feeling that we will wreck Citeh's hearts in the final minutes.

The way the team play isn't beautiful. We had possession yet our finishing was bad. Rooney and Giggs had the best chances. I see no one bashing either of them? LOL, texted Apis regarding this. If it was Berba, curses, here and there will be thrown out by fans.

I hesitated to go out until the final seconds are over. My friend was hurrying me and told me that we will draw. And there it was, Scholesy again to the rescue. A free header at the nearby post beating Given. I ran inside the house and screaming my lungs out. My brother and my dad joined me screaming too. My friend smiled and said the goal was taken lovely. In the final seconds and he mentioned that this will affect Chelsea.

Boy, he was right. Later that night, I watched Spurs kicking Chelsea's ass all over the field. From the point that Terry gave away the penalty, I told my brother that Terry will get 2 YCs and sent off. It came true. And Spurs nicked 3 full points and bragging rights over Arsenal and Chelsea.

Thank you Scholesy!

walauyah... u talk like Rafa, Tores & Gerrard still staying with Liverpool next season hmm.gif
Next thing we know, Torres request for a transfer after this misery season, Gerrard being jailed after caught in another bar brawl and Rafa got fire from their new owner.
Heck maybe the whole team get dismantled and send to relegation cause the new owner is Man Utd diehard supporter whistling.gif

Liverpool won't do that since there are no PRIDE in it.

Their (some of their fans anyway) version of PRIDE now is to deny Utd getting no 19 altogether, hence my earlier post (on them giving our rival 6 points head start).

I was watching with my friend as well at a mamak and we were supposed to meet some other friends after the game. He was telling me the game was over and we should go meet up our other friends. Me and his girlfriend were insisting on staying till the very end. Scholes got it in, we were both jumping. Heck, the whole mamak was jumping and celebrating. It's moments like this that make it all worth the while. laugh.gif

Buffon could quit Juventus
QUOTE

Gianluigi Buffon could be heading for Manchester this summer in one of the biggest transfer deals of the close season, and Italian sources believe City are poised to outbid United for a man ranked by many as the world's number one goalkeeper.

United beat City on Saturday to restore their chances of the Premier League title and consequently damage their blue rivals' hopes of qualifying for Champions League football, which would hugely enhance City's ability to attract the best players in the summer transfer market. But if money talks, City will clearly be shouting the loudest when it comes to making the right kind of offer to tempt Buffon.

Italian reports suggest United will offer Nemanja Vidic plus cash for Buffon, while City have the ability to match Juventus' £30 million asking price. Sir Alex Ferguson is reluctant to lose Vidic, but there has been speculation all season that the centre half wants to quit for a warmer climate as his wife has failed to settle in England.

The biggest stumbling block for Ferguson, though, is Buffon's wage demands of £4 million after tax, and with a new high rate of tax imposed in England, that would make Buffon by far the highest earner at Old Trafford.

Juventus have suffered a wreck of a season and are looking to rebuild. Buffon, a prime asset who could be cashed in by the Bianconeri, said of a potential move from Juventus, who he joined from Parma in 2001 for a then world-record £23 million fee: "The decision does not depend on where we finish in the table whether or not we qualify for the Champions League, although we must carry on in these circumstances and at the end of the season we'll see what happens."

Buffon was one of a number of players who stayed with Juventus despite an enforced 2006 relegation following the calciopoli corruption scandal.

And Soccernet's Italian sources revealed on Sunday: "Three weeks ago Roberto Bettega [Juve's vice director general] said that Gigi was untouchable, and that he will stay with Juve. However, three years ago Juve made a pact with their players, a gentleman's agreement, that if they stayed when they were relegated to the Serie B, they would be allowed to go after three years if the club failed to get back to their glory days.

"But for Buffon to leave Juve, the price will have to be right. The fee is £30 million and the player requires £4 million after tax. As Barcelona and Real have good keepers, the only destination can be England, and while United need a new top goalkeeper to replace Edwin Van der Sar, City have the resources to buy Buffon."

Blues boss Roberto Mancini has reportedly endorsed City's interest in Buffon, even though Shay Given was purchased from Newcastle for a significant fee in January 2009. Bayern Munich have been linked with Buffon before as a replacement for Hans-Jorg Butt, himself a stopgap after the failure to adequately replace Oliver Kahn.

Juventus already have their eye on a Buffon replacement in Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti while Villarrreal's Argentine keeper Diego Lopez is a target who just so happens to share an agent with Rafael Benitez, who is still understood to be considering an offer to take over at Juve, where he would be granted a large budget to buy several players including Lyon's Michel Bastos and PSV Eindhoven starlet Ibrahim Afellay.

Why Buffon? He`s too old now, different matter if we get him 5 years ago.

Replacing old goalie with another old goalie?

Get Iker then biggrin.gif

If he can last for another minimum of 4-5 years whilst still being among the top, why not? But no way should we pay to get him and include Vida in the deal. It should be the other way round.

Added on April 18, 2010, 9:51 pmBut 30m? No way. Around 15m would be fine. VDS was a steal at 2m.

Bro, LUCK plays part in anything.

I don't care if people saying we are LUCKY. It shows today with Arsenal, leading by 2 and beaten by 3 in 10 minutes. Lady Luck smiled upon Wigan tonight.
