iphone and apple products have never been about doing more things, it has always been about doing things right, even if it means doing less things. Smartphones didn't really catch on till apple made the iphone, they brought something to the market which people could understand and use. So the iphone is good because of the user experience, which is something no other phone can come close to competing.
If the n900 had the same user experience perfectionist nature as apple did with their iphone, the n900 would be one heck of a beast. The n900 is incredibly unpolished right now but its potential is incredible. Would love the n900 to be more refined, then it would kick the pants off the iphone.
Btw, people often mistake javascript and java. Your bank sites use javascript (they shouldn't really), not java. n900 doesn't support java applets as far as I know. You can try www.goproblems.com. That uses java applets.
Added on April 10, 2010, 10:45 pmwell to answer your question, it can. It can even play gameboy and gameboy advance games. snes games, n64 games etc. the n900 runs on a linux platform, so basically anything that can run on linux, would be able run on the phone.
I have the gameboy advance emulator on my n900, and I also have scrumm VM to play some of the old adventure games which I miss.
Personally, iPhone makes things better for the novice or normal users, they make it simple and "safe" for these users. But then, these are not the "smartphone" that techies or IT people are looking for; These are more like "smart"phones for dummies. That's why there're article which says iPhone is not a smartphone.
BUT, if they allow OPTIONS for users to "activate" or "open" the app, then it will be a different story.
What they do is more like, TOTAL control over their customers, and not giving any chance for the users to take any advantage. This is good for them because they can ensure that their product is secure and stable, less complains.
What Apple did is like giving only "GUEST" account in Windows to the users. So as an administrator, you can be sure and worry less about the user and also no need the user did some mistakes, face problems and put the blame you.
A smartphone is like a Phone with Mini Computer. When we buy a computer with an OS, we get Administrators rights and we can do whatever we want with the PC.
But none of the smartphone have reach that level except N900.
We paid so much for it, and what do we get? Restrictions? Control? Limitation? Wow.... Who's happy to pay to be controlled?
But then, it depends on the users/buyers. iPhone will suit most normal phone users and fit their requirements, because they polished then important BASIC features very well. They don't really need "smart" users.
So, these user wouldn't mind if they only get "GUEST" account, because what they want is just a phone that is appealing and works well. They won't need the Task Managers, and all those "advance" options.
If we're talking about "true" smartphones, then usually it's the more advanced users that will be looking for it, and the REASON why they choose smartphones. That's why these users keep looking for more and more powerful device which lets them do more stuffs, have more flexibility, less limitation, etc. iPhone will not fit this bill unless it is JB.
Btw, Jobs said a FLAT no to Java and Flash to iPhone OS4. There're reasons why iPhone have so many growing apps/games; It's because of their control and market, developers are getting most benefit from there.
Honestly, I'm not against iPhone, I would get one but definitely will JB it. I just cannot accept the price which is over ridiculous for it's specs. Based on current phone market, it shouldn't even cost more than RM1.5K. The 3GS only come with single speaker, delivering MONO sound quality.
iPhone actually is a GOOD thing to happen, when it first launch, it make a BIG entrance and change to the smartphone world. It's like a phone from future, and make all other smartphones look bad and outdated. But it's been sometime and I only see minor updates or facelift over the iPhone 2G->3G->3GS. Imagine the first buyer, pity them and it ain't cheap.
iPhone change the smartphones market, bring tough competition, and WAKE UP others and make them pay more attention, which results to today's smartphone and also competitive pricing. If not, I think smartphones would easily cost RM3K or more.
