We have had a lot of questions about Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on all platforms about the issues some have had. Here we will answer some of the more common questions, some will help you get in game, others will give an insight to what we are working on.
This Q&A isn't a definitive list by any means and we are aware of and are working on more than these issues:
Connection issues to EA servers
EA Online has been adding more capacity to handle the high number of player connections to EA servers. This is an ongoing process but we currently have enough capacity to handle all BFBC2 connections.
Manually install PunkBuster on PC
If you are getting an error that Punkbuster hasn't installed correctly for reasons such as Windows admin permissions not allowing Punkbuster to be installed, then go to www.evenbalance.com and download PBSetup.exe. When prompted, point PBSetup at your BFBC2 install directory and then check for updates. A PC restart maybe needed once this is done for Windows to pick up Punkbusters location.
PunkBuster kicks with the following error message : « punkbuster kicked player 'PLAYER NAME' (for 0 minutes) ... RESTRICTION: Service Communication. »
This is a Windows Vista/Windows 7 permissions issue that affects all Punkbuster games. To solve this issue download and run PBSVC from
http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe When clicking on a server to join, nothing happens.
This is fixed in a patch going out on PC today.
Details of possible changelog:» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
*UPDATE* We have had to pull 522174 from release as QA found some last minute crash bugs on two of the multiplayer maps. The team is working on releasing it as soon as possible but can not confirm at this time if it will be today.
As some of you will have seen there is a new patch on EA download servers v522174.

Change: Displays version number on Front End Legal Screen
Change: Display of weapon icon during loading screen
Server Browser bugged: All the following browser issues are things the team is currently working on improving.
Too slow This is caused by the current browser system. - A new system is being developed by the BFBC2 PC team to improve the server browser
Displaying inaccurate number of players connected on game servers - This is caused by the difference in server status between when the refresh was initiated and when the results display.
No ping displayed - This is caused by Windows admin privileges. To view ping in the server browser run BFBC2.exe with administrator privileges.
High pings even on local game servers. We're actually showing game latency instead of ping.
This is basically how far behind the client is compared to the server. We try to keep the server a small portion in front of the clients so they in most cases can use replicated data until they get the next ghost update from the server. If they get a lag spike they will start predicting the state when they run out of information, however, the basic idea is to smooth out the experience compared to everything having to be corrected when the predictions are slightly off.
After being disconnected, some people got their stats temporary reset.
The team is investigating this issue, we have no solution at this point. Please report any stat loss here:
http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlef...sing-stats.html When people try to reconnect to their profile, the game asks for the serial number again
This has been fixed on the entitlement side hence no patch is needed. A really small number of people got affected by this.

3. Look where BC2 BETA was installed, if the BC2 BETA directory remains, delete it.
4. Try running the game again.
5. Reinstall the PunkBuster from the disc if you didn't install it the 1st time. (Or download the latest pbclient for BFBC2 from
http://evenbalance.com/)DETAIL steps on reinstalling PB (from EA UK forum)» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Right follow these steps all the way to the end to make sure you download missing files that are not installed by PBsetup.exe.
1> Goto PunkBuster Online Countermeasures @
http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php2> Download PBsetup (3.4) install, run and add your game.
3> Select your game file and click check for updates.
4> Navigate to: Battlefield Bad Company 2/PB/htm/
5> Make sure you have the following files in there:
wc002158.htm
wa001382.htm
If YES skip to step 6
If NO then goto: PunkBuster Online Countermeasures @
http://evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-bc2.phpDownload those files and place them in :
Battlefield Bad Company 2/PB/htm/
NOTE: We discovered that pbsec.htm was missing from the BFBC2/PB directory so the following procedure is to MANUALLY install the missing file.
6> Now do the following:
From PBSEC.HTM @
http://evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-bc2.phpPunkBuster (Bad Company 2) Security Files
The following files are only needed if your PunkBuster doesn't update by itself. Right click the appropriate link below and choose "save as" to your "pb" folder - make sure the file you save is saved with the filename shown below.
For Players Filename: pbsec.htm @
http://evenbalance.com/downloads/bc2/pbsec.htmFor Admins Filename: pbsecsv.htm @
http://evenbalance.com/downloads/bc2/pbsecsv.htmNow PB should be properly setup.

For those than can't play because you get a white screen after levels have loaded:
Rename BFBC2Game.exe to BF2.exe in your game installation folder and launch it directly.
This was a work-around from the BETA and works for this problem too. No idea what the problem is or why this works, but does for me at least. PB doesn't seem to mind either.
This works due to nVidia and ATi having BF2 specific features in their drivers. So renaming BFBC2 to BF2 you make use of those features while they work on updating drivers. nVidia did release drivers but then they had to pull them for tech reasons.
BFBC2 FPS is so low and is unplayable. (Tweaks are in the of spoiler tab below the system specs.)
BFBC2 Minimum System Requirement.
• Processor: Core 2 Duo @ 2.0GHz
• Main memory: 2GB
• Graphics card: GeForce 7800 GT / ATI X1900
• Graphics memory: 256MB
• OS: Windows XP
• Free HDD space: 15GB for Digital Version, 10GB for Disc Version
Use FRAPs to display FPS in game.
Make sure you download the latest video drivers from Nvidia nd ATI. Use beta drivers at your own risk.

In Game SettingsTurn settings to native reso, or lower and set setting as Advanced then put all low and off.
Turn sound down from hi-fi to headset (you will have to do this each time you load the game) BC2 uses a lot CPU for sound.

(best to backup the whole BFBC2 folder 1st)
Change sound quality to low (also changeable in game menu but resets every time to hifi)
Change DXVersion-auto to 9 to force DX9 eg: DXVersion=9
Change Bloom=true to false
Change HSAO=true to false (also settable in the in-game “advanced” graphics settings)helps esp with quad core
Change renderaheadlimit to 0 instead of 2
- Undergrowth=”medium” – Put this to low, if experiencing frame-rate issues.
- Water=”medium” – set this to low does help.
- MSAA=”2? – This is Anti-aliasing, this will always use up a lot of a gpx cards resources. Set this to “0?
- Shadows=”medium”- you can also set this to low to improve performance
- Textures=”medium”- Setting this to low can improve FPS
- Aniso=2 – Set this to 0 to disable Anisotropic filtering.
To force the use of all processors:- Add “+fullproc” without the quotations to your desktop shortcut or Steam game’s “launch options”.
EG: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield Bad Company 2\BFBC2game.exe" +fullproc
-You can go to Task Manager and manually heighten the priority to force it to use more CPU.
1. Start the Task Manager, then click on "Show Process from All user" (make you into admin mode)
2. Start your BFBC2game client, alt+tab to task manager, right click on the BFBC2game.exe process
3. Set Priority -> High
*Do use this at own risk, if set too high or push your processor too hard without good ventilation or cooling solutions, it might overheat and cause problems.
To fix sticky controls (for those who get key shadow/lag with wasd etc):» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Server being grayed out in Server Browser, Favorite Server & History List. (Direct copy from my own post @ Server Grayed Out possible fix by ZeN)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
To All Brothers in Arms :- that have problem connecting to server due to grayed out problems. (Server name show, without map, ping & join button.)
I had the same problem, server browser after found the MBT server, it is grayed out, in fav, it is grayed out, in history, it is grayed out. So... I just click on the play now, a few time gotten the cannot connect to EA Online problems, but finally get through. Play less than 5 minute, i exit the game.
Then, i notice at my History, the server i just joined is not grayed out, but the MBT server is. So i was suspecting that something got to do with the "History recorded for the MBT server".
Thus, i open the gamesetting.ini file @ My documents>BFBC2 folder. As below:
FavoriteGames=4013601797,de76fdb3-0668-4ef1-b4a0-d256bd75f8a4,MBTCENTRAL.NET BC2 Server 1;
RecentGames=1915849124,0a5719cc-970a-4f9e-a5f7-5153a009c632,[HEX] Conquest ALL MAPS Mon Server 03;43661219,54f58214-8301-4954-ab27-5b7c2929bf9e,=US= United Soldiers;4013601797,de76fdb3-0668-4ef1-b4a0-d256bd75f8a4,MBTCENTRAL.NET BC2 Server 1;
As you can "see" above, there 2 other server there, which when i see in game history list, No problem at all, but the MBTserver at below the 2 server is grayed out. So i thought what the heck, must be this code snippets for the MBT is causing problem.
So, I backup the gamesetting.ini file and changed the
FavoriteGames, and RecentGames cvar to "Empty" as below:
FavoriteGames=Empty
RecentGames=Empty
Then.... I go in the game, i go to Server Browser, when it loading data, i click cancel. Then i direct put in "MBTCENTRAL.NET" to search. Will get cannot connect to EA problems sometime, but when it does pass through and show up the MBTserver, the server is not grayed out anymore, all the ping, map, and join button works. And i happily join and played a very nice game with those MBT members and some LYN members for almost 3 hours.
I have not tested it fully, but as for now, i purposely exit game, then go in and login again and my MBTserver at the history list is working well, no grayed out problem. I tried twice also is still there, so... you guys can try yourself as what i did, but do remember to backup your gamesetting.ini file ok?
Alternatively, Maybe, here is a direct "history" record of my current gamesetting.ini. Maybe can just copy and paste it replacing your history list in gamesetting.ini and might work.
RecentGames=1774763778,a82442d9-2071-4b8c-a0df-6badaf218ab7,MBTCENTRAL.NET BC2 Server 1;
Anyway, Hope all this will help.

*Not sure, but maybe manually patching the PunkBuster might have solved this server grayed out bug also, anyone try that and work then do let me know also.*
The Stationed Shielded MG's view hole is black, cant see anything: -- Picture provided by lightonokira
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Yes, it is a bug. the small tiny view field of the glass is black. Anyway, I not too sure but I believe it is because some one rocketed the stationary MG. So the decay actually covered on the glass whole thing dark. That's why we see it as the MG glass is dark.
NOTE: Some might thought we can snipe through the small tiny hole at the stationed Shielded MG, but there is actually a bulletproof glass. That why no matter how accurately you snipe, you wont get shot through that hole.
*UPDATE* -- It also might be dx9 specific bugs due to texturing or decays. Solution will be setting your dxversion = 10, or 10.1, or 11 at the settings.ini file.
Game freeze when exiting OR game process still exist in Task Manager process list after exit game. -(I got this problem, confirmed.)» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Some might have experience that the game freeze while quitting, then need to manually end the process at task manager.
Some the game didn't freeze while exiting, but the game process is still stuck at Task manage process list eating up resources.
Only solutions so far is to start your task manager before the game, minimized it.
Then if freeze during exiting, then alt+tab to task manager end it.
If didn't freeze while exiting, then check your task manager to see if the process still stuck there eating up resource or not.
Modifying the FOV in settings.ini & bug known:» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. Go to My Documents>BFBC2 folder, open the settings.ini file.
2. Modify the FOV field from FOV=55 to any value between 55~200.
3.The sample FOV value respective view in game.
*Bug: "Reported by some, and I tested and notice also.*
The change of FOV will some how cause the view of your iron sight and the normal view to be "out".
When I zoom, then unzoom, my cursor sort of being "much left side" during unzoom. Your aim was like "run" when you unzoom.
Certain FOV values will make the 4x scope's red aiming reticule appear INFRONT of your gun's scope while sprinting/turning.
Iron sights/Gun models not really scale with FOV.

The following are common questions for Bad Company 2, if you have a problem please check the list below before submitting a support request
•Pings aren't showing in the server browser
•PunkBuster filter in the server browser doesn't work
•Server Name filter is case sensitive
•Server list doesn't always display all server
•Daemons for BC2 are not supported
•Server Descriptions / MOTD isn't displayed correctly
•What the the available settings for Bad Company 2 servers?
•How does reserved slots work in BC2?
Pings aren't showing in the server browser
Currently pings in the server browser use ICMP echo, which is often blocked by firewalls both on machines e.g. windows firewall and on routers. If your client isn't displaying server pings check to ensure that your firewall isn't blocked.
In addition windows Vista and Windows 7 users may need to run BC2 as an administrator to enable pings to work
PunkBuster filter in the server browser doesn't work
The filter option for PunkBuster in the server browser currently doesnt work, it always returns zero results.
Server Name filter is case sensitive
If you use the server name filter to find your server be aware that it is currently case sensitive so searching for "multiplay" will not return servers with "Multiplay" in the name
Server list doesn't always display all servers
There is a known issue that is preventing all servers being listed all the time in the server browser, the workaround is to refresh the list and if this doesn't help to restart your server
Daemons for BC2 are not supported
Due to security and other general problems related to running third party Daemons we will not be supporting them. All functionality that is provided by these daemons can be achieved in standard rcon based utilities so there's no real need for them anyway
Server Descriptions / MOTD isn't displayed correctly
Currently server MOTDs set in ServerOptions.ini -> ServerDescription don't display correctly, this is a bug in the BC 2 client
What the the available settings for Bad Company 2 servers?
The official documentation for the Bad Company 2 server can be found here:
•Official Bad Company 2 Server Documentation
How does reserved slots work in BC2?
Adding players to the reserved list in Bad Company 2 is done by adding their player names to the reservedslotslist.txt one per line. Once added please note that when the named players arent in the server the number of available slots effectively be reduced by the number of players listed. So if you have 32 player server and 10 players in reservedslotslist.txt with 4 of those named playing your server will max out at 26 players, with only the remaining 6 players listed being able to join.

Ok, just go to mission select the mission you are on and restart the level.
Then the checkpoint save file will be replaced.
Then u can use the "resume campaign" again on this new checkpoint.
Should work la, and as i remember it should be checkpoint style right?
