For those who ask here's a quick reference!

To enter the Custom Function menu on the HVL-F56AM:

- hold down the Select button for 3 seconds
- press Select to cycle through the Custom Functions
- press - or + to change the options of each Custom Function

The Custom Functions are:
1) Wireless channel WL CH-1/CH-2/CH-3/CH-4
2) Flash range units m/ft
3) Time to auto power off 4 minutes/15 minutes/60 minutes/-- (none)
4) Time to auto power off when using wireless flash 60 minutes/-- (none)
5) Recording modes in which manual flash and multiple flash may be set M/PASM

Those in bold are my recommendations.

To enter the Custom Function menu on the HVL-F58AM:

- hold down the Fn button for 3 seconds
- press left or right to cycle through the Custom Functions
- press up or down to change the options of each Custom Function

The Custom Functions are:
C01 - HSS on or off
C02 - Channel 1 or 2 or 3 or 4
C03 - CTRL1 (CTRL+ to trigger F42/F58 on A700/A850/A900) or CTRL2 (CTRL to trigger F36/F56/F42/F58 but only on A850/A900)
C04 - PASM or M (means you can use Manual Power flash even if your camera body is not on Manual Exposure mode)
C05 - TestM (strobe for 4 seconds when you press Test) or Test3 (3 strobes) or Test1 (one strobe)
C06 - Power Saving 30 minutes, 3 minutes, 0.5 minutes or off
C07 - Power Saving when in Wireless 60 minutes or off

cjlai: Ah, finally, portraits from the portrait lens!

lwliam: Congratulations!

Hi guys .. need some opinion.
Which is better?
A300 or A330?

What's the difference between both anyway?
What about 18-55mm SAM lens and 18-70mm lens?
Which do you prefer?

i personally would go for a330...it's the successor of the a300 with a more precise Quick AF LV...if u're a LV fan, u definitely wouldn't want to miss that out =D
Besides, the a330 is a lil' smaller than the a300, so i guess it has scored the mobility points and, u get a whole new user interface biggrin.gif

In terms of price, the a300 will definitely be a cheaper model provided that u've found a good bargain =D

1855 SAM is Sony's new kit lens for the newer entry models where 1870 is for the old models. 55mm vs 70mm, the only difference is that the 70mm lens would allows u to zoom a lil' further compared to the 55mm lens.

But wait, 1855 SAM( smooth autofocus motor) lens has a quicker response during focuses compared to the 1870 and also, SAM lenses barely produces any loud sound during focusing and, it's not SCREW(ie: it works internally) focus...all these reasons are the other way round for the 1870 biggrin.gif

PS: don't flame me yo' blush.gif juz telling my opinion laugh.gif

lugia: i couldnt agree more.

Fighteden:
A330 are said to have a 'little' (unnoticable? lol) iso improvement to A300. faster AF (and better accuracy score) then A300. the liveview are the same though(usually i disable all the display around the LV, just plain image)

some people just love the A300 for their GRIP, and additional Vgrip(optional purchase) whereelse there is NO Vgrip for A330. A330 score pretty well (for now) on mobility... i'd get one A330 if i dont own any camera body.

for the 18-55/70. definately go for 1855, they are indeed far more sharper lens for landscape. the 70 has a little softer corners (centre still sharp) as for the extra 15mm, u can easily grab a 2nd hand 1870 online for rm300++, that if u really wan to grab it. IF u are going serious with photography, just use whichever one u grab, 6 month or a year later, go 16-80Z or tamron1750 as kitlens replacement. (HA! the tamron 1750 is even shorter, but HIGHLY recommended lens~)

but again, if u have money (i bet everyone else will say the same thing) pls reconsider A450/A500/A550. but if u plan to buy to shoot birthday party and vacation to china(etc), A330 is just fine~... but if u plan to go event shooting, more intense shooting, pls reconsider. :Poison

btw, prepare extra 1k then ur initial budget, coz after 1 month of using DSLR, u will definitely back asking bout flash tongue.gif

well, performance wise, G and SSM's Zeiss does get the best out of top AF system(it does contribute to lowlight shooting, example of the A700's F2.8 sensor). and A900 will pushes the 70200G SSM to the limit (even better sensor to grab accuracy, and dual Bionz for processing and speed.

so, say, A2/3 series, they dont have F2.8 sensor (special sensor), and older sensor, it might not performce at best at lowlight. A550 has the newer AFsensor but not F2.8, but many review quote it's as good as F2.8 at lowlight. i have not tested it, so i have no comment.

i'd just say, the newer ur system/body/AFsystem, it will greatly benefit it.

for IQ wise, its very debateable... coz each lens has diff characteristic, and diff sweet spot, and also body dependent (FF and BF issue)

ksano
: i wont say the IQ is the same FF lens on FF or APS-C. standard FF lens are knowns to have softer corner(no comment on the premuim FF lens),... that why on APS-C... they dont see the corner because they only capture the centre area of the FF lens, which is the sharpest zone. hence, many people will say that APS-C has sharper IQ then FF.

and lugia the A450, i wont mind, coz the price is about the same as A330twinkit...

(A330 has LV, A450 doesnt, but greater iso, DRO, and auto HDR, 7fps then A330)... how to compare?

Nope, a450 has a LV...but with no quick AF system =D

hmm, newer system mat have more advantages...make sense =D
i've came across lots of reviews that claims that a550 performs well in low light, but personally, i think that it does perform really well provided that the ISO level does not exceed 3200. Any higher, even the NR Hi doesn't help much...

btw, a450 has a LV..but with no quick AF system.
here
Performance wise, obviously it's not right to compare a450 with any entry level models...=D

I travel frequently on the job and I wouldn't want to miss out the opportunity of bringing home some memorable shots, but using my a300 + cobra saddled together really piss me off in terms of mobility. but of course i love the picture quality.

Would it be wise for me to look for smaller body ? or should i sell of everything and move on to micro four thirds ? eg pen ?
