bros, im having a tight situation here =D this is how it sounds...

yesterday, i was trying to shoot some grasses at night( no ambient light at all). The problem i have was autofocus. I know that it doesn't like dark condition. So, i forgives it. But then when i switched to MF, i couldn't get a focus cry.gif The MF ring was on infinity and the camera was 3 feet from the grasses btw. I've turned the focus ring a few times for a few attempts...but still, no luck. cry.gif

How can i solve the problem without creating a light source?

The second problem, when im shooting right into the starry sky, I juz got a few tiny lil' light spots. So tiny that I can barely see it. I was using shutter priority with 30s. Isn't that long shutter speed will capture more light rays from the star to make it as a star? Am i doing it wrong? cry.gif

thx

3 feet is less than a meter right??(if i remember correctly)
i don think u lens MFD is so short..unless u r using macro lens or u put in closeup filter/raynox...

if u r using MF..it doesnt matter if u dont have a light source there..as long as u could see it in ur OVF..u shd b able to focus(assuming the distance is above the MFD)..

30s isnt really that long depend on ur lighting...since u said the stars were so tiny n dark u could barely see it..i don think 30s is good enough...u need bulb mode...

my flash was on my DIY flash ring..about 30cm behind my camera..30cm on top of it(i put it on a chair)..pointing 45 degree down(try to not let the light spills into the background..

When it's in the dark condition, when the camera cannot do AF. You will not get the focus confirm indication even u switch to MF mode. MF mode mean.. u hv to use your eye to see whether is in focus or not.. If the lighting condition permit, u will see the focus confirm indicator in the viewfinder when u half press.
---
For the starry sky, either ur aperture is too small, or your Shutter speed is not long enought. Most of the time, ppl will use a longer shutter speed.

OK. thats why the sync only up to 1/250s. It's RF trigger? or Light trigger?

===========

Today just send my 5 month old A700 to SONY STYLE to fix the rear control dial problem.
They remove all the accessories from the camera including the screen protector. Is that necessary ? I curious what if they scratch my LCD screen?

Hope they won ...

hmm, yea...3feet is less than 1m ~ 0.91m
but my lens' MFD is about 1.2feet lol.
And I've tried using OVF but even with the flash pop open'd, it has no IR illumination...not sure why.

Alright, I'll try bulb nxt time =D

lol, the reason i switched to MF is so that I could be able to turn the focus ring to infinity...but, sad.gif sad case.

i'll try a longer shutter nxt round =D

IR illumination ? THere is no IR illumination for SONY camera.
for A550, it should use the flash light for focus assist. U should check in the menu whether u have disable the focus assist light..

The reddish light? u mean the one inside the OVF? if u mean that one ... that was the AF lights which everytime you get focus ... the OVF segments will lights up into the place you focus....
