hi all sifus,

can i get some recommendation on the specs or better still the laptop models? im looking for a used laptop as im very tight on budget now. max rm1200.

i need:

- at least 14" screen
- fast processor (core 2 duo?)
- at least 2gb ram memory
- graphics card (at least 256mb?)
- not too heavy
- large hdd space (>120gb)

main thing is no lag when open many apps
and can play decent mid range games.

im a newbie in laptops, pls recommend like what kind of specs i need to search or is it possible if i get a lower spec and upgrade? im really clueless.

thanks

Used laptops..maybe you can find better luck in Garage Sales there..usually with your budget, only Netbook is available but for Notebook (like you stated want used one)..Garage Sales would be a better searching place smile.gif

Added on January 30, 2010, 1:00 pmYup, stay away from laptop with 8400M/8600M graphic card shakehead.gif..this is a known problematic cards from nVidia

its not possible to change, you stick with what you get.
Only certain notebook can change, which usually high-end notebook.

as for that notebook, most probably intel gma x3100 or 4500m hd, which you would really want to stay away if want to play games,
try search around something with ati hd3200

i think its a X4500HD. the model is acer 4732z actually. so the benchmark is at least ati hd3200?

mind to recommend some necessary specs?

i wanna:
run multiple apps without lag.
able to play decent mid range games.
watch videos

thanks again.

well, hd3200 is still integrated, most probably play at low settings.
but for new price, its hovering around rm 15xx, which you might have larger chance seeing it at rm 1200 for 2nd hand

for better experience, its better if can get ati hd4570 (asus k40ab/k50ab) or nvidia g210m (lenovo g450)
new unit is at least rm 1999, see if you can find any 2nd hand of it..

well, since mostly games depends on gpu, only some needed better cpu.
as long you get dual core cpu, it should be enough, especially with this kind of budfget.

well, ram can be upgradeable, at least get 1-2gb and if can, get at least ddr2 type, ddr1 is kinda expensive and hard to upgrade.

If I want to use both Windows and MacOSX?
My friend owns 1 MacBook.
He installed 2 OS in his MAcbook.
MacOSX for online, Window for assignments and Movies.
macbook will hang if use 2 OS together?
what my friend told me is macbook wont hang if using 2.53ghz.
is it true?

btw, what other brand laptops are good performance?

well, if want to use both, then MacBook Pro.
its not necessarily needs 2.53ghz to be not hang, no need to be fixated on 2.53ghz.

as for other brands, not much emphasis on 13'' segment.
the upcoming Vaio S with intel core i3 / i5, should be starting at rm 4k.
or Asus UL30Vt which runs on low voltage processor, 1.3ghz, with nvidia g210m, better graphic card than the macbook pro 13''and can last 6++ hours, rm 3k
toshiba m900, intel core i3, nvidia 310m, rm 3.2k
compaq cq36, core i5 430 2.24ghz, ati hd4550, rm 2.6k

p/s if you want to take the macbook pro, you might want to wait for a while, since refresh of macbook line should be near.
