I want to buy a laptop for gaming.Budget 5k.Mac or dell?
*
When comes to games, Dell wins Mac big time...Mac is never games friendly..

Take a look at:

1. Dell Studio XPS 16
2. Asus G51vx/G51j
2. Sager

See eugene91 spec for Dell SXPS 16 above thumbup.gif

Used laptops..maybe you can find better luck in Garage Sales there..usually with your budget, only Netbook is available but for Notebook (like you stated want used one)..Garage Sales would be a better searching place smile.gif

Added on January 30, 2010, 1:00 pmYup, stay away from laptop with 8400M/8600M graphic card shakehead.gif..this is a known problematic cards from nVidia

Better go for Acer 5470G as Inspiron 15 lacks of GPU power for games...Toshiba L510 also a good choice

for medium gaming, infernet surf, ms office, vmware, n other prgraming software.

How medium is your medium gaming??...well, for the spec that you given, it well suited with your needs in laptop..

@nightmare_Byran
Well, Macbook is some notebook but please be concern about budget and all...also another thing would be the needs of the laptop, if its for just surfing, doing multitask..hey, why not go for Macbook but for serious gaming better go for some mid-level budget laptop tongue.gif

Eventually raise a bit more to 5k can get a lower end Alienware tongue.gif
*
No need to spend much money, just go with the budget that already have will do...most laptop will out-dated say like in 2 years time...maybe he can use the extra money for others thing, no tongue.gif...

An Alienware m15x is already RM6k sweat.gif...m11x maybe RM4k (least priced, can go up much more nod.gif)

IMO gaming on a 11.6" monitor is going to be one hell of a strain on your eyes. In short, I find the M11x an utterly ridiculous sales gimmick of sorts.

If it retails for RM3k and below, then I might have to reconsider... but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
*
Agree with Loki..yes, 4k (well maybe but seems like true) for a 11.6" laptop for gaming, well i got to say not all people would like it, no tongue.gif..because gamers prefer a much bigger screen when come to games rclxms.gif...hope the price will reduce as we can see it as a small Notebook with such power graphic nod.gif

Well, can't really say so, depends back to how the user take care of it and his/her luck.
But for sure, Dell's warranty is nice, but expensive.
*
+1, some say Acer is thumbup.gif while some say Dell is thumbup.gif...well, i have one Acer Travelmate which already 4 years still on running, consider reliable nod.gif

ive heard that asus is more reliable than acer? is it true? i wouldnt mind adding another RM200 if its worth it. smile.gif

btw, i tried googling specs for asus, couldnt find any in english. ><
*
Well, with Asus you get automatic 2 years warranty while Acer need to topup a bit to extend the warranty...well, for me both are reliable nod.gif

Added on February 2, 2010, 2:39 pmI would recommend you to take Asus A42jr/52jr instead...like lee said, much better value than Acer 4740G nod.gif

QUOTE(livinzo @ Feb 3 2010, 02:31 AM)
dilemma here guys,
im torn between the
new macbook white rm3699
and
acer 5740G rm 2999

i do alot of photoshop, lightroom, elements work

reason for macbook white:
better build, multitouch, prefer the os, BETTER battery life!!, nice LED display and good UI,  and alot people say photographer all use mac

but acer offers a good deal,
core i5, nice gpu, 4gb, windows 7 which i dont mind trying out, more hdd capacity, more usb ports, bigger screen, cheaper

so what would you guys reccomend? any other models? my budget is 3 - 3.6k range. thanks

remember, i do alot of photoshop, lightroom and multitasking work.
*
Both at different level of price...well, seems to me that your budget is quite large (assuming from Macbook RM3699)..

Well, from what you do i guess better of getting Macbook as Macbook is quite good when comes to graphic processing nod.gif

Performance for this spec would be:

*Just for working purpose, light flash/FB games is considerably ok, battery life around 3~4 hours...

Is it possible to fully custom made a laptop?

My requirement:
- a decent CPU (dual core above)
- 4gb RAM

Remark:
- I don't need an OS
- I don't mind a 20gb HDD if it's the cheapest
- Build-in crappy graphic processor will do
- Any sort of display will do as long as can see
- Any other lauzy spec will do

Where can I get such laptop?
*
Maybe you can tell us your budget smile.gif...well, for such spec it would be IMPOSSIBLE to find a new one, consider looking for a 2ND HAND one?? Garage Sales there got many laugh.gif

@ajercrazy
From the list of laptops that you just posted, i think it would be best for you to take Dell Inspiron 14, which is by means a bit better than Acer 4736 & CQ40 nod.gif...one of the reason would be the aftersales service which Dell give the best out of the three smile.gif...

Well, from spec-wise it would be :

Aspire 4736=Inspiron 14 > CQ40

but also worth ma since if anything happens during the period, sen heng will cover it instead of we pay extra 200+ to get extra 2 years from manufacturers.
*
Well, true because SH would cover all the cost for you, but please be sure what actually SH will include in the warranty...

I'm also looking for a netbook within that range. What shop in lowyat do you recommend with good price and trade in an old laptop (5 years old acer).
*
Its better for you to roamed around in LYP before buying the laptop..some shop are just pricey while some give good deals thumbup.gif...just roamed around and compared each other prices and what freebies can you get from the shop smile.gif..
