i sometime use my nokia e90 symbian phone as router also. the nokia i use joiku software, can download free
*
What plan are you using for the tethering?
Cos I'm going to buy a nokia symbian phone, and plan to use the joiku quite frequently.
But still yet to decide which plan shall i take. sad.gif

---------------------

So seems like we're gonna sign another plan for the micro-sim of iPad, guess the next best alternative is using software like joikuspot - make current 3G-enabled phone a WiFi hotspot, and provide your iPad WiFi smile.gif

so it all points to us having to sign up for YET another data plan to use the microsim. What a ripoff.

I'm keeping my iPad wifi then - and buying a Huawei 5830 in which I'll plonk in a prepaid data sim. I think in the long run, that's more value (plus I can share the connection).

My jailbroken iPad only has 1 Cydia app which is Lockdown to enable password access to the mail app (*or any app you want), other than that, not much else. Bought Real Racing today, got bored of NFS Shift.
*
But I thought Lockdown is not compatible with iPad yet. Do you encounter any problems?

i need to clarify few things regarding the multi sim thing.

i have a maxis postpaid, which is on unlimited rm99 package.
so i get another sim with same number for data/broadband purpose, i pay additional rm99 every month?

cant share the unlimited package on that one?
*
Firstly, what an interesting and long thread! It's taken me a while to reach here but it was fun!

Anyway, back to the poster's question. I think I may be able to help you here as I too have a RM99 unlimited data package for my account. I swapped my current SIM for 2 multiline SIMs, the main one replaced my iPhone SIM card, and the second went into a Huawei 5830. The CS at the Maxis Centre who advised me confirmed that if the 2nd SIM was for data only, then it would share the data charges from my unlimited package. The only extra cost was the monthly RM15 for the SIM card. So in other words, no extra RM99. He did warn me that if I used the 2nd SIM for voice calls then call charges are different, ie, more expensive with peak & off-peak rates.

I hope this helps you in your final decision. All in all, I've found that the iPad/Huawei 5830 make a perfect partnership. smile.gif

In my case I don't want to give spend more money than necessary. I already have a very robust Streamyx connection, I'm paying RM50 per month for my iPhone 3GS data connection and work is paying for an unlimited Blackberry/3G connection.

Sharing in my case would make a lot more sense, I can't/won't do jailbreak+MyWi.
*
since there're people reported that they can have 2nd sim work for data only, maybe you want to request for another sim and cut the hell out of that sim and fit into the ipad? hmm.gif

I jailbroken my iPad from day 1, no need to worry anything... brows.gif

that's the good thing about mifi, you can share the 3G connection. like in my case, streamyx cabling in my area just went down and i cannot login with my streamyx account despite the line is stable. i use my joiku and still can online as usual.

it depends on what you need. if you can't live without internet where ever you go, buy the 3G version.

after using my ipad for a while, i find whenever i want to take out my ipad to online regardless wifi or 3G tethering:

1. either i got no time to online because usually busy eating at cafe or chatting with friend.
2. i got nothing important to surf.

unless i use for individual music lessons, which i find:

1. streaming youtube is wasting a lot of time (connect, search, and stream), better use the time to teach something else. having the youtube downloaded and ready to play is more convenient and time saving and more organized lesson. unless emergency, i can always use my nokia.
2. the class room i teach in the uni got no reception, not even GSM. so even if i have ipad 3G also no use...

the only situation you'll need the 3G is when:

1. waiting for somebody in the cafe or shopping center
2. long bus trip
3. the place you work where there's no wifi or internet

i think the ideal method currently if you already have a good data plan with ur telco is to order a multi sim, cut it and put it in the 3G iPad.

If you want to order the microsim they won't let you share it with ur existing data plan. Finally the reasons why apple launch the microsim for their ipad is now clear as day to the normal non-tech users.

However whether cutting and putting it in works i don't know, however i did read a post a few pages back from a guy saying he did it and working like charm so that gives me hope. Now i wonder if my Blackberry unlimited data plan works on normal multisim cards or not.
