Hmm Body only with no lens, even with BG for rm1200 is not worth it, somemore 2 years old ++.

I bought my 2nd hand D40 kit at RM1250, that time still have 4 months warranty frm nikon (not even 1 year odl), 2 batteries, tripod and everything except BG.

@zidane88 and general_nic
exactly, no kit lens even with BG at rm1200 is not worth it. BG for d40 is practically useless except having better grip and longer battery life. Vertical shutter uses IR which cannot autofocus. Might as well buy d40 kit, and then get extra battery enough.

@mafiaboy34
lol VC is important eh XD
actually is sigma 1850 better than tammy 1750? cuz tammy 1750 is more famous now... but it's famous for its back focusing prob (some batches) too. How's sigma's IQ compared with tammy 1750? price?

So you mean which one is the best?
I'm planning to upgrade to D90 end of this year and get tamron 1750 together.

if for D90, with motor or without motor is the best? but without motor no VC, afraid handshake.

So it's better for me (in case i really bought D90) to get the NO-MOTOR version?

I think I can only get my D90 end of this year or maybe early next year... That time no-motor tammy 1750 will be more rare. But then the motor version the focusing speed is it similar to my d40's kit lens (18-55mm non vr) or slower? if the same i can still accept.

Oh my... My 18-55mm is already very slow, tammy 1750 is SLOWER? gosh... But it's ok after using for awhile right? I don't plan to get D90 soon, wanna use D40 at the moment. Might get the tamron 1750 but afraid of the slow focusing...

@maxh3h3
thanks for your recommendation, if I am going to upgrade to D90 then I will hunt for 2nd hand tamron 1750 without motor. Since the IQ is the same if not better than VC right?

If the lens is old, 2~3 years old is it still ok to buy if in good condition?

And, erm... in case i can't afford to get D90 that soon, i might just get the VC version for my D40. But D40's noise control is the worse, i will try to save money from now =)

zelleonhart , i saw 10 year old nikkor lens before, perfect conditions , i m not talking about those antiques at nikon time square, a good photogs kinda know how to preserve what the most valuable things of photography , its all about the lens , camera is a second thing to consider.
New body in market comes and go in history but a the legend of the lens stays on  notworthy.gif

VC version kinda look too big for a d40, everything make d40 look so small cept for the 50mm but it cant auto focus with d40 lol rclxub.gif

takes care of it maybe your next few generations get to use it  rclxub.gif

Yeah i'm taking good care of my d40 ^^ but the lens got some focusing prob and mount contacts problem, might send to nikon centre to check. Thank you again =)

u sure D40 noise is that bad?

35mm f1.8 is a recommended combo with D40.
*
It's useable at ISO 400 but at ISO 800 the quality already turn quite bad. needless to say ISO 1600, cannot use at all.
I know 35mm f1.8, but im thinking of changing my body first, because i can't stand the noise and the feeling of slow shutter. I used my friend's 450D, with IS turned off, i can handheld without noticeable shake at 1/10 or 1/15. but in my D40 1/40 also got a bit shake already, maybe it's my shutter problem?

My d40's shutter sound is VERY soft, not "kacha" sound... very soft even at 1/1000 shutter speed.

I know many people are using D40 combo with many good lenses but i'm here ranting about it. But then D40 doesn't suits me now, I need a better body and then only start buying lenses. =(

i m so poison with d90 now, but need like rm1 k on top if i sell my d80. With d90, u can spend cheaper with the 50 1.8 at high ISO  shocking.gif
So many thing about d90 make me so so poison OMG.

Yea d90's noise control is VERY GOOD even at ISO3200, i saw the original JPEG file, very very useable unless u zoom in 100%. Not to mention shooting in RAW.

I also no fund now, if i sell my d40 kit i need to top up rm2k for d90 body, if wan get tammy need add money. Very poor leh as a student... So i can just use my D40 now lor... beggars can't be choosy T.T

I know 800 still acceptable... but it's the limit for me =)
Well it served me quite well, i have been using it while i travel to many places (she even followed me to singapore XD) and it didn't failed me, just the shutter sound is really soft and shaky now, i dunno it's only my copy of D40 or all D40 is like that. Last time it's ok now it's quite "soft".

Maybe need to send to nikon centre and check and calibrate my lens already =)

Yea even if i have d90 i will not use above 1600 so common. Maybe handheld without tripod during night shots will boost la. But i saw 3200 sample, if not pixel peeper then it's acceptable =)

see your signature also know u are a... rich funded person... Not like me still using d40 @.@
I might get my d90 mid 2010, see my PTPTN and angpow and my own savings enough to cover or not.

If i get d90 body, i dunno wan to get tammy or the kit lens. Tammy is great in low light and maybe better bokeh but i wan fast AF @.@

@isepunye
Yea I'm planning to do like your friend too, just eat biscuits as breakfast and lunch T.T

I think the main reason for me to upgrade to d90 is because my D40's shutter speed is kinda "slower" than the others, maybe shutter got problem already. The sound is REALLY soft @.@ Not to mention noise control lo..

Oya one more thing, the mount contacts between the body and lens got some prob, sometimes cannot AF or AF already can't capture, need remount the lens. I dont wan to waste a few hundred to check and fix it, i rather save that money and buy 50mm F1.8 or put it in my savings to buy d90.

I might sound like I don't utilize my D40 until the fullest but this is my own experience and opinion lor... I know with the price of d90 body i can buy tammy 1750+ 55-200mm + maybe 50mm F1.8 but... you know.. =D

Yea but only optical trigger (use pop up flash). Radio trigger need to send back to distributor and update firmware or send to shops to modify. PJ is too far for me so i didn't go. And i seldom do strobist so it's ok for me. (not to mention i don't have a commander flash or radio trigger)

ur shutter sound is softer than other d40s?

i think d90 is a worthy upgrade. cuz, say u go for a d5000, i wont really 'enjoy' the upgrade since it's too similar to d40. might as well go all the way to a d90 smile.gif

plus, if u get the 50mm, u'll like it so much that u'll be using it a lot. and soon u'll really hate it instead cuz cannot AF on d40.

btw for me ISO 1600 is decent. but 3200 is damn ugly already.
*
I didn't compare cuz i don't have friends who uses D40. They use canon 450D or sony. But when i compare to any model it's so soft and it doesn't sound like "KACHA"... dunno how to explain.

Yea if upgrade to d5000 it doesn't feel like an upgrade. But i might get 35mm instead of 50mm cuz i prefer wider one.

BTW 1600 is still OK... I seldom use cuz i still don't like the noise. And in D40 the shutter doesn't feel fast, when i use 1/40 in D40 and 450D the speed is "faster" in 450D and easier to capture [i already turn off IS, still easier]. No need to say d90, even better =D

Got some fungus ah? How to know got fungus or not? If got how to clean? Can use a piece of rubber eraser and clean the contact points?

I love my D40 too because it's light and easy to use, even though 450D is superior than D40 but if you ask me i will choose D40 over 450D / 500D anytime. and yea d40 is famous for overexposing a bit...

Well as i improve D40 is not suitable for me anymore, and perhaps the 6.1mp is a bit too low for me. If's sufficient for normal shoots but i need higher MP and other improvements in D90 over D40. =)

Yea 450D the buttons doesn't suit me. D40 too small for my hands, everytime i shoot half day my little finger sure pain. BTW in d90 if i wan to change the AF point, is it the same with d40 (just click the direction button) or need to change in settings like 450D?

Owhhhh direction button! That's one of the MAIN reason i choose nikon. Easy to change AF point in the middle of a shot. ^^
