Nokia N86 Introduction/Preview

The Nokia N86 8MP is designed to excel in both bright and low light conditions, and it’s optimized for both video and still imaging. Its high-speed connectivity ensures easy and convenient sharing.

Easy enough for a novice to use, the Nokia N86 8MP packs enough punch to impress an experienced photographer. This includes a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic pictures, shorter latencies and variable aperture for super sharp photos in challenging bright and low light conditions. The fast mechanical shutter ensures pictures with less motion blur while the dual LED camera flash is powerful enough for excellent photography and video capture.

Every detail of the metal-framed Nokia N86 8MP is thoughtfully designed with photography in mind, including 8 GB of internal memory for up to 4,000 images. like any high-end digital camera, the memory can be increased with an exchangeable 16 GB microSD card. The device also offers a bright OLED screen with scratch resistant hardened glass, easy photo management, full sync capability with a PC and TV-out support for slide shows.

Shipping with the latest version of Nokia Maps and full Ovi integration, the Nokia N86 8MP gives a personal dimension to photos and videos. People can share their location with personal content like geotagged photos. The Nokia N86 8MP comes with a built-in compass, along with an integrated 3-months license for full voice and pedestrian navigation so that happy snappers don’t lose their way when capturing life through the camera lens.

Camera

While this phone is Nokia's imaging-savvy flagship and all, we probably should put it differently - this handset boasts the highest megapixel count in the company's portfolio. And the reason is that no phone maker has managed to impress us with stunning picture quality after jumping straight to 8 MP camera units from 5 MP. The N86 is no exception on this front.
The N86 utilizes an 8 MP CMOS camera module, similar to those used by other phone makers. Also, it features a two-section LED flash that can make some difference when taking a picture from 1-2 meters away. While the N86's flash does better at shooting sceneries rather than people, it's still debatable which kind of flash is superior - Xenon or LED. Perhaps the Sony Ericsson K850i answers this question in a certain way, utilizing both the Xenon and LED flash types.

The N86 camera's specs are as follows:

* Carl Zeiss Tessar lenses
* 20x digital zoom
* Focal length 4.61 mm
* Focus range: 10 cm ~ infinity
* Macro mode - 10 cm ~ 50 cm
* Scenes - automatic, user defined, close-up, portrait, landscape, sport, night;
* Geotagging - may be disabled

Below is our chart of battery times we managed to squeeze out of the N86:

o GPS-navigation – 4-4.5 hours
o Video playback – 6 hours 15 minutes
o WEB-surfing (EDGE) – 4 hours
o Wi-Fi (non-stop data upload) – 5 hours
o Music (in earphones) – 29 hours 20 minutes
o Radio – 19.5 hours
o Internet radio (over Wi-Fi) – 8 hours
o Games – 6 hours

Performance and Hardware

While the N86's performance has increased a tad, it's no record-breaker.
The N86 doesn't bring anything new to the table, except for its increased CPU speed, now running at 434 Mhz, against the N85's 369 Mhz. While it might not seem like much, this enhancement makes all the difference when it comes to the phone's performance - we found that it was around 20 percent faster than its predecessor.

I had time today to take the RDA tour of the 8MP Nokia N86. It was great and the best part was the ScreenSaver is simply amazing. Earlier Ricky told us about the Kickstand having some function to it. More or less like a sensor to open a particular application but I guess at times it can be buggy. Notification light comes in with a breathing light and lights that alert you of missed calls, new message, new emails etc. The screensaver is amazing and reminds me of the faceplate time display on the Nokia 7205. Catch a glimpse below.

Nokia N86 Consumer Reviews

This is one of the best mobile phones ever with great features. I am using N86 for last 3 months. The performance is awesome. I have used many phones and i will tell you that, this is the best. i don't wanna specifically point out each features as others did that. All the features are working absolutely great. This is not a touch screen phone. That is the only disadvantage any one can say. But such people can go for another phone. not for N86. Some people are talking about the weight of the phone is more. It's just 20 grams from N95. N86 is 149g and N95 is 129g. what is there on 20g extra weight, if you are getting exciting features. Thank you so much guys. You can buy the Nokia N86 with out any hesitation

this is an amazing mobile phone from nokia, it is a big improvement on the N95 8GB which i had many problems with. The N86 feels and looks great with a great build quality, the phone is heavier than the N95 8GB which i believe is an improvement in the quality of the components inside the phone. The best features for me are the great keypad makes texting a dreamagain big improvement on the N95, when the slide is closed the buttons on the front of the phone are much better as they are spaced out more. The new fearures on this phone are the inculsion Of BBCiplayer and an FM TRANSMITTER. 8 megapixel camera instead of 5 megapixels and a kickstand and a micro sd card slot meaning you can carry upto an extra 16gb of extra memory. there is of course 8GB built in like the N95 had. the inculsion of a micro sd card slot is great. The Screen is fantastic it is clearly visible in any light conditions being OLED also means it hardly dents your battery unlike the TFT on the N95. the N86 is the best Nokia mobile i've ever had!! the charger is also different as nokia have opted for MICRO USB this is a major advantage over previoius nokia models as the old 3.5mm chargers would easily snap of bend!! Anyways trust me get this phone you will not be dissapointed!! This phone makes the Apple Ifone look like a joke!!haha

Latest N86 News!!!

™Firmware V21.006.54.1!!™

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The last firmware update for Nokia N86 (v20), bought in face detection for the camera and few other new features. This new firmware update is basically a maintenance release and it looks to fix the numerous bugs with the current firmware. Users can easily update the firmware of the phone by entering *#0000# and then selecting the option of “Check For New Updates”. Since Nokia N86 supports UDP (User Data Preservation), users can update the firmware via FOTA, and they don’t need to worry about losing any of their contacts or messages. Users who have updated the phone to the latest firmware, don’t report any major performance improvement. Typical of Nokia, no official changelog is available for this firmware udpate until now.

™Version 30.009!!™
Version 30.009 is described by Nokia as a 'Maintenance' update:

* includes the latest Ovi Maps 3.3 (with free navigation)
* includes the sharing of location via Facebook
* Nokia Messaging improvements and fixes (apparently)
* RealPlayer interface tweaked
* the usual minor fixes and improvements (v30 seems rock solid so far)

if your nokia mobile phone is asking you for the security code but you can no longer remember what this is then dont start just guessing the code due to the fact if you get it wrong more than 5 times the phone is then hardlocked and can only be unlocked using leads and software.

After so many phones I used (all were just 3 months the max), I finally saved my contacts into the phone's memory (previously all saved in SIM card only)...
