depends on your laptop. i have dell e1505 (inspiron 6400). only cleaned the fan twice when it's blocked by dust and fan cannot blow properly. look up tutorial/guide on the net if you really want to DIY (when your laptop is out of warranty of course). otherwise, you can send to computer shop.

not all laptop are design for user to do maintenance such as cleaning the dust

especially HP laptop, to open their laptop is very very hard, while dell i'm not sure

most of the manufacturer will have their user's manual writen, "blow it with compressed air", and it doesn't really clean even with compressed air

most of the gaming laptop or high end laptop model is easier to take out the fan/heatsink to clean.

just be careful when you open it up, dont forget the position of those screws

oh no.. mine is hp 6910p
i don't think by blowing air towards the ventilation hole can help anything
it's like blowing the dust back in

if send to shop, roughly how much they charge? RM20? RM30?

you can try do by yourself if you have confident that you can do it. else leave to the expert. i dont want you to accidently break the ribbon wire or any small component inside loL.

and some notebook are real easy to get into the fan area for cleaning up (like Alienware M15x and Alienware M17x), so its depend on how complicated the notebook place their fan too.

dont know why, but most of the mainstream laptop also like this, have to open up the bottom, take out everything, then open up the keypad, then only can reach the fan shakehead.gif

I have read the manual. It seems that HP CQ40 design makes it pretty hard to clean up the fan. Hell, even Acer easier.

i see so many mainstream laptop, their design looks good, but to open up and take out the fan to clean is actually very hard, not maintenance friendly at all

now using sager np8662, reaching the fan is never a problem for me, take out the heatsink and everything is just as simple as a desktop one thumbup.gif

i cant actually reach the fan of V3000, i just use ear bud to clean it through a small hole and give me a glimpse of the fan, i take out the keypad then at the top left corner, below the power button, there should have a small hole there, you can see a bit of the fan, from there clean it using ear bud

if you can figure out how to take out the larger heatsink on the 2nd pic, do tell me, i've take out all the 6 screw at there but still no hope, i scare i will tear the card to 2 pieces if use too much force.

the one at the top right side of the picture, with the X pattern aluminium securing it

since the heatsink are join together as one, so need to take out the fan and the two side first, but somehow cant take out the GPU part.

Panasonic and Fujitsu do have notebooks with Intel Core processors built with just passive cooling.

Btw, regarding the heatsink discussion, there isn't a need to remove the heatsink unless you want to change the thermal paste. I wouldn't really recommend doing that. Cleaning the dust off the intake vents, fan blades and the heat sink blades right at the exhaust vent is sufficient to get your notebook much cooler.

If it is just for fun, I think you better off not to venture further or it can quickly turn from fun to tears in one fell swoop. (Unless it is your experimental notebook).

follow the basic rules and you will be fine, at least all the time tongue.gif

1. no water
2. no electrostatic
4. observe the inside surrounding
3. be gentle

sometime too gentle then cant do anything, at first i wanna use more force to pull it out, but then i see there is a connector there, so sayang sayang slowly put it back tongue.gif

i've heard some people said also, but i think is because the distance between the compressed air and the fan is too close, if i'm not wrong, should be at least 3-5cm of distance.

Yeah, you are right. But if you already know what to do and where to apply more force and where no to, then you don't have to worry about the need to handle it too gentle, right? But I guess for this particular notebook you don't know yet.
