Beginners Guide to Desktop Modding

Disclaimer:
1. I'm not responsible if you mess up your registry and your computer decides to no longer work. just so you know, do all of these things at your own hazard.
2. Guides are taken from other guide scattered in the forum and other forums.

Introduction:

So you went to customize.org and you saw the most badass desktop ever and you want to know how it's done right? now that you realize that posting a comment saying "great screenshot, how did you do this?" doesn't get you anywhere, this tutorial will attempt to reveal to you the basic steps of desktop customization in windows and point you in the right direction as to where to achieve more advanced effects.

Enabling WinXP to use 3rd party themes:

Universal UXTheme Patcher:
The UXTheme Patcher allows you to use any 3rd party msstyle theme on Windows XP/SP1/SP2 by patching the uxtheme.dll (dynamic link library).

Download UXTheme Multi-Patcher

Download visual style from any of these site:
- Neowin.net: Completed Visual Styles
- deviantART: Visual Styles
- Customize.org: XP VisualStyles

After you have downloaded the visual styles; usually in zip format; extract it to c:\windows\resources\themes\

Right click desktop > properties > appearance tab, select the visual style you just installed.

Another method is to use WindowBlinds; download here; also 30 days trial.
You can get themes for WindowBlinds from WinCustomize

Wallpaper:

As you may have guessed, your desktop background or "wallpaper" is integral to the overall look of your desktop theme.

A good rule of thumb for wallpapers is to always use one that has a solidly colored area so you can place your icons and other desktop elements without interfering with the wallpaper's focal point. This becomes a problem sometimes when you're using a wallpaper that has a lot of three dimensional work and doesn't really leave room for a blank area. This might require you to edit the wallpaper a bit to your liking and may be more trouble than it's worth.

Samurize:
- shows your cpu usage, memory and etc
Download link: http://www.samurize.com
Install samurize; then make sure you run the client.exe in order to have the program display on ur desktop. Run config.exe to mod the appearance and add stuffs.
To show the temps; download motherboard monitor at http://mbm.livewiredev.com; make sure you configure all the meters so that it follows your mobo's sensors.
Create shortcut for samurize client and then put it in your startup folder so that it will auto start the next time you restart/turn on your computer.

To make some adjustment in the settings of the config -> right click samurize icon on your systray, then select edit config.

Changing Windows Explorer / Internet Explorer Toolbar Icons

- download Y'z Toolbar: Y'z Toolbar 1.3
- download themes from these sites:Put it in your "startup" folder in Start Menu --> Programs --> Startup to initialized it on startup.

Hiding the Recycle Bin

Easy way:
Download, install and run TweakUI for Windows XP. Navigate to Desktop and remove Recycle Bin.


Add Recycle Bin to Folder Options:

Copy and save the following code into notepad and save as Binopt.reg and then double-click it. After importing Binopt.reg into the registry, a new option is listed in the Folder Options dialog box that lets you configure the Recycle Bin icon.

Making a Transparents Background for Desktop Icons.

By default, Windows XP, can have a transparent background for desktop icons.

System Properties (Win+Pause) > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Visual Effects > enable Use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop

But, if you disable this you can change the text color and background. For this you need D-Color XP. Install it, click on a monitor icon in system tray and you'll get this:

mmm...u dont need to change 1 by 1...
styleXP use special file format... (.iconset)
it will change all automatically...(depends on the iconset file u dload)...
you can dload most of the iconset at themeXP.org...
also available at wincustomize.com (i think here need 2 register first)...

u can make the iconset urself...

I have a question here.. Hope you guys dont mind to asnwer me.

I am interested in DesktopX. But i cant find any tools in DesktopX to show my temperature. And secondly.. If i have 2 drives, how can i show the Second drive? It only shows me the Primary Drive (C:) but my E: Drive cannot be displayed.

Do not move it, just create a shortcut and place it into startup folder. Otherwise the YzDock will have trouble to find the assigned icon and applications.

hi Sifus ,

are there any application where I can edit the items to be displayed on the left hand side of the windows when I'm saving something in any applications like MS. Excel , Words , etc. I would like to place my custom directory instead of the common buttons i see such as

My Recent Documents , Desktop , my Documents , My Compauter and my netowkr places/..

You have to buy the license. The license will released the restriction place on the evaluation version.

forgive me for my noob question here... my recycle bin is norton protected by default and when i click it on the dock, it doesn't go straight to the bin (those who have should know what i mean). how can i get it to go directly to bin on click? what's the arguments to type?

I got one question to ask..I already installeed the UXTheme Patcher,restar the window and i extracted the visual styles to c:\windows\resources\themes\ and after tat i go right click the setting and click appearance tab,how come i din found the visual styles tat i installed blink.gif. By the way i am using win xp sp 2 reduced media edition which mean no media player installed,i kinda confused,why my control panel dun have the appearance and theme? ^firstly extract the files inside the rar file somewhere reachable. ie desktop.
it should come out with VistaCG094 folder.
inside that folder got another folder named vistacg.
just copy and paste the vistacg folder inside c:\windows\resources\themes\.

hope this help.

I use a little program called Iconoid. Its free and small.

Basically you can set hot spots on your screen. Like if you move your mouse to the top left corner, itll minimize to the desktop or any other window you specify. Easy to use to. Just google it if you want it...

u make the file using any file editor and save it as .iconset...
place all the icons into the same folder as the iconset file...
or if u r using icons on a different folder... specify it in the setting...

that one only apply to styleXP...
coz styleXP use *.iconset extention...

edit: idont know bout the new stylexp.. coz long time didnt use it since.. but i think it still can be applied...

but if you want to create a visual style you can use resedit or stylebuilder.
you can get both of em here.

its not necessary to download the dock n clock........jz add-in watever u like drool.gif

and yupe icon_rolleyes.gif u can add new themes wif StyleXP but due to resource usage n shakehead.gif not a freeware tongue.gif i recommended u to try UXTheme Multi-Patcher.... icon_rolleyes.gif

how about u try Nuovext shell pack... or xpize... no hassle and great looks and also they patch ur uxtheme.dll, also use iphile to change ur icons... like in the first page... rclxm9.gif icon_idea.gif rclxub.gif laugh.gif

sorry, another stupid question..
i'm using this FlyakiteOSX with has RKLauncher "bundled" but somehow it was labelled as Y's Dock.. anyway, u see.. it has this default recycle bin (metal basket).. i wanted to change the icon.. manually.. every time i delete files or empty the bin, it will revert back to the original icon.. i tried to edit the configuration files and noticed it uses .PNG instead of .ICO .. so, i tried to changed the extension and saved the file.. IT REVERT BACK TO .PNG!

anyone can help? thanks!

rk launcher is NOT y'z dock but both use the same recycle bin docklet

to customize the icon right click the docklet and select "Property of Docklet"

Modding success. Thank you fariz for the H:mm:ss trick.

I use Universal UXTheme Patcher, and then put the themes in the resource folder. I find it less lagging compared to the Media Center Royale Theme.

hi.
im using visual style(msstyle) for long time. now im kinda interested with windows blind. all i want to know is what the different between using visual style and WB. i mean in memory usage, efficient, look, function. i googled it but only found the good review. i want to know both, good and bad.

im prety concern about my laptop starup speed, memory usage and installed application, etc.i just dont want my laptop suffer the load of the application(WB).

any effect on starting up speed by using WB?

How do I go about changing an individual icon using IconPackager? The set I DLed doesn't include a few icons, more specifically the MY VIDEOS folder, it doesn't let me do the ol' faithful of right clicking the folder and changing it that way.

Any help would be appreciated.

When using avedesk@avescripter, how do i change the weather to that of malaysian weather??
it just gives me montreal's weather

icon tweaker only reads ico file
so how can i use png file in icon tweaker

maybe the file is not for logonui.exe maybe the file is for logonxp or sumthing cool.gif

It only has 60 days trial though. Will the skin be disabled after the trial period?

Another question about the rainmeter...The original skin color is blue but i changed to black and after restart my window it revert back to original color rclxub.gif Btw...the rainmeter skin offer various color which we can choose.

RKLauncher for teh win!!11!
one reason is margin hotspot.
margin hotspot will kacau me while playing games especially rts games.
you can disable it if you're using rklauncher and you can't if using yzdock.
correct me if im wrong.
(i do know about closing yzdock when playing games or something using batch file)
another thing is yzdock is a discontinued product and why bother using old proggie smile.gif
in term of memory usage i can't tell you much as i'm not using yzdock for such a long time.

with the latest RK Launcher, when you don't have separator, just right click any of the dock icons and select RK Launcher Setting

or

Add it manually.

Go to RK Launcher folder

find the file itemlist.conf and open with notepad or a text editor.

Add the following code to the end of the file

[RKDockItem]
type = separator
show = normal

2. type "gpedit.msc" (of course without those two ")
3. look at the left pane of the appearing Group Policy window
4. expand all this User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop
5. now at your right pane there are many "remove" options.
6. double click Remove Recycle Bin icon from the desktop.
7. the appearing window > Setting tab > select ENABLE radio button.
8. ok
9. done!
10. feel free to refresh the desktop once or twice.

the recycle bin icon is now removed. of course only icon is removed, not ACTUAL recycle bin. haha. lame joke lah.

BTW, only tested & working to winXP PRO. tried winXP HOME, error came out said no gpedit.msc in the winXP HOME computer. also winXP N cannot. and i also dunno the work around for this problem.

OK... another question.

I'm currently using IconPackager for my normal icon. And RK Launcher as my docklets blush.gif


What are these icons here for:

Somehow now I am having a problem of recognizing what icon for what and where to search these icon for these particular programs.


The only docklets I'm using for my RK Launcher is the default which I get out-of-the-box. I can't add new ones (except changing it when I add new applications... which I have learn just now)

And a lot of my icons can't be detected by IconPackager sad.gif

Ok.

To change icon for certain program/application in RK Launcher, u just click right at the program that u wanna change the icon, chhose "Dock Item Properties".There u can choose to use custom icon or default icon.

The pic that u shown is for adding new docklet.
To add docklet, go and download the docklet that u wanna use (remind that only download docklet that specially design to be use for ObjectDock or Y'z Dock)

After finished download, extract the file, then u will see a folder with the name of the docklet that u wanna use.Cut and paste the folder into "Docklet" folder.

BTW, I suggest u to use CandyXP tp change icon.Easy and freeware.

for the glss 2k...do i need to set the setting so that it always on everytime windows starts? otherwise evrytime i restart it will set as default.And the glass 2k only can make the window's menu transparent not the programme files menu transparent is it?

hope someone out there can help me,i recently modified window xp home edition's skin with Theme Patcher.The skin i am using is from deviant art and the name is aquanox but after using it,i found that one of my programme is unable to use whereas when i change to another skin(the name is crystal dlb) my programme back to normal.The programme that is unable to use when using aquanox is Sonic stage 4.0,hope u all can help. smile.gif

Okay... got a problem here...

Whenever I drag my Start Menu bar (as on the picture... to the top)... and I restart the PC... it will always come back to the bottom... what happen??? Any way to fix it or did I miss some option I forgot to tick or untick???

I don't know what I did... but just now when I restarted my PC... the Start menu is at the top and the Language Bar toolbar has dissapeared (it used to return no matter how many times I disabled it sweat.gif )

Kabal`s only list the shortcut rite .. but this .. not only shortcuts .. it also shows details of the item that we click.. from what i can see and understand in the vid tutorial..

can it b applied after we unzip all the files into the theme folder which is located in the window's folder?

either you didn't unzip those files properly or you didn't patch your uxtheme.dll
that's why fariz told you to read the first page.
if you're not using style xp, you need to patch the uxtheme.dll and it's a must.

use tweakui for hiding ur recycle bin .. if u want clock or any widget .. u can use avedesk , samurize , yahoo widget ..

Does that mean that I only can have this sidebar if i am using MicrosoftVista? If no, can you please share where can i download a similar programs for this sidebar? I tried yahoo widget and it takes too much of my RAM, my computer is getting too slowed when using it. now I am using a Vista visual style on my win XP.

is there any way to make the dock visible only in Desktop, and I dont want to show them in window? When I set "Normal" or "Always in Bottom" in rklauncher, everytime I press the "show desktop" in quick launch, the dock is missing

I dont want to make it always on top, because it will block the opened window, I just want it to be showed on desktop at all times

Just wanna check with you guyz.. I am running Windows VIsta transformation pack 5.5 & Mozilla custom theme .. I feels very lag compare to previous windows xp.. I just re-formatted my pc .. First time using theme.. tongue.gif

My spec is P4 2.8ghz, 768mb DDR400 ram, 80gb hdd, etc...

background running bitcomet, msn, kaspersky antivirus, yahoo messenger and some sound devices.. whistling.gif

that's vista sound systray icon..
you need to reshack stobject.dll which is inside your system32 directory..
anyway, i have a modified stobject.dll (using the above icon) so you only need to replace it using replacer..
it's inside my attachment smile.gif

use tweakui there is an option for animation in Internet explorer change it there
if u r using styler toolbar jz remove the explorer
and the upper question ive edi told u b4 stop minimize ur skype windows to dock

is getting the Yahoo toolbar is a good choice? will it slow down my computer speed?

u need Styler. Once u install it, put tango styler toolbar in C:\Prog files\Styler\TB folder > run styler > go to toolbar tab n select the tango toolbar.

slighty different, Samurize more to system monitoring and Avedesk more to shortcut icons & some desktop utilities but Avedesk offers some system monitoring as well but the skinning is limited to some creator only while Samurize offers great skinning config for you to create skin by yourself. smile.gif

To get the weather forecast in your desktop you'll need to install AveDesk then install SysStats then choose the weather desklet. icon_rolleyes.gif

why my desktop icon cacat one? the backgroud behind the icon looks like a patch of color (which is the color of the background is blank wallpaper is selected.). i enable & disable desktop icon shadow but still the same. why?

Right click anywhere on the desktop Arrange Icons by Unchecked the Lock Web Items on Desktop.

Right click on My Computer > Advanced > Performance > Settings > tick the Use Drop shadow for Icon labels on desktop.

I personally prefer RKLauncher *I think there is a link in this thread* but somehow it crash with my Firefox browser, I can't copy and paste in Firefox grumble.gif anyone experienced the same problem like me?

But still I prefer RKLauncher than any others dock smile.gif

I have a problem. I am using WindowsBlind with a Vista theme, no problems there.

The problem is with this theme, when i try to use my video player (Zoomplayer) to watch video on fullscreen mode, the whole screen turns into a dark shade of red (can't see anything at all). I am on 1440x900 widescreen ratio display.

What can be the cause of the problem here or is it a bug ?
If i unload WindowsBlind, the problem will be gone. hmm.gif

Yes, Im still using it since it doesn't bugging me a lot I can close it to fix my browser problem.*As it might be my system problem and doing desktop customize is always preparing for error, laugh.gif it's normal* And it's consuming low memory usage and smoother comparing to ObjectDock as my 2nd recommendation. Well, ObjectDock offers a lot of functions such as weather forecast, clock, start menu, system monitoring and etc. Or you can try RocketDock as well but RocketDock didn't have any Icon changing option for empty and full recycle bin.

Yeah..i agree. They will use some CPU power. But it is not that utilize too much to cramp the system. You still able to do other thing while running the application.

havent tried dat prog yet, but im using y'z dock. i only cost me 748k mem usage. plus its free source! rclxms.gif but i got prob to with my firefox. somehow it close itself without any good reason!! vmad.gif (for me tho! haha!) sweat.gif

Having some trouble with my Y'Z Dock.

CODE

The error I'm getting is,

What's wrong? Or do i open up the game using their original .exe? Instead of using the .bat.

Anyway, tried it without using the .bat, when i close the game the Dock doesn't reopen. blink.gif

Thought I should mention:- the current uxtheme multipatcher 5 & universal uxtheme patcher 2.1 doesn't work on windows 2003 SP2 RC1 (at least not my test machine). So if you happen to use Win2003 SP2 and these patchers corrupted your uxtheme.dll and you could not restore, download and use this pre-modified uxtheme.dll to replace the damaged copy.

excuse me, may i know where to buy WindowBlinds 5 original version?? how much does it cost by the way? i'm only 16 this year... sweat.gif can't afford to buy anything expensive.. =_=; another question, does adding RAM to your computer actually makes your system run faster? or is it the processor that makes the system run faster? i'm having quite some problem here.. i'm using the Desktop Sidebar, Rainlendar, Icontweaker and Vista Visual Styles now.. my system seems to be very slow and laggy because of that...

any suggestions to make my computer run faster? my RAM is only 256mb..
and the processor speed is 1.7GHZ.. thought of upgrading my comp after CNY.. use ang pau money.. hehehe..

i think u just enabled the font cleartype. it'll change the windows font to be blurry(cun meh!). so, u just have to disable the cleartype font.. just use default font type.tongue.gif

What rainy's skin you using at?
Go inside the .ini file, there is a link there and just follow the link to get the weather of other countries.

i've no problemwith cleartype enabled.
anyway.. to disable it, right click your desktop and select properties
click on appearance tab>effects
untick use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts
or go to your system properties
go to advanced tab and click on performance settings
untick smooth edges of screen fonts..

Sorry dude, It seem you are the one who don't get what is cleartype meaning tongue.gif . Cleartype is not a font. It seem something to do with the font anti-aliasing and contrast to make it more clear to be display, it still Tahoma/Arial after all.

Btw TweakUi doesn't have something to do with the cleartype thingy. I think he need to search for Cleartype tuner provided by Microsoft instead of TweakUi.

i've one problem using tune-up styler2. when i apply a set of icons, all icons change except when i view in Windows Explorer. all the folders in My computer change but not in windows explorer. i rebuild the icon cache but still the same. why?

besides that, when i change the bootscreen, there's no effect to it. it still remains the old, default bootscreen on my pc. why?

I am using UXTHEME on my laptop now.
when i want to install logon XP it said that my .NET framework no have and i can not install it... however i check in add and remove part find that i have all version of .NET framework.

my home PC is same as my laptop( i use to update both of them always), but it can install by a double click, why??

i'm a newbie here, i hv download a theme file from wincustomize.com, and i cant straight apply that theme from desktop>right click> themes i hv follow the way TS teach me but the UXTheme multi patcher need my windows XP SP2 CD but i dont hv it, how do i apply new themes to my computer?? u dont need the windows cd, all u have to do is just apply the patch and when the windows protection prompt u for windows cd just cancel it. then ur patch is completed. then restart ur pc > apply the theme that u choose.

oh, but now i hv patch the things, after i restart i still cant apply my theme, is it apply at right click on desktop>properties>themes?? but the windows only support .themes format, but the theme i download is DESKTOP FILE, is it the theme file has to put in somewhere else?

everywhere u can put the theme file, usually to make it ease people put the file in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes. Theme file is in .msstyle extension.

it's a format for windows skin. dun kno bout .desktop extension but to manage themes easier, maybe u can use a skinning programs like windowsblind or style xp etc

most of the functions are same. just hv to try them urself to kno ur style. i think yz dock n rk launcher is open source program
for beginners i think object dock is good.

really sorry for giving u gents a headache....newbie here. tried the bricopack because i think it required the least hassle..the problem is :


1. cannot change the wallpaper...it uses default wallpaper?? because i cannot find the 'desktop tab' in display or desktop properties.

2. removed the bricopack and reverted back to normal xp but the 'desktop tab' is still missing..

what happened?? do i have to format again??

p/s still maintaining the yahoo widgets and stardock though...

I got problem with the changing of icon,

But the icon is surround by white even the icon is fully black.

If u change visual style or theme only, it won't lag ur pc.
But if u add things like widgets or sidebar, it will sure slow down ur pc

the shortcut which does not have icon are definitely samurize.. shortcut made by samurize are different from object dock or rk launcher.. so its better that u use samurize to decorate most of ur desktop.. hehe...

text shortcut is yes.. but if u mean digital clock then is yes also.. not for analog big clock..

LoL.. I managed to figure out how to do the text icon thingy with Samurize... but failed to figure out how to create it through Adobe Photoshop. In fact I got rclxub.gif with all the stuff and features in Adobe Photoshop. Dunno how you guys do it so fast sweat.gif

Is there somehow a place where there is this text icon available for download in .png format?? Even the template would be fine (template as if I just change the text in Photoshop since that is the only thing I know how to do.. the rest available..)

I recommend deviantart. But most of the icons are in 256x256 pixel

haha.. thanks for the url.. but its better to creat your own design with using photoshop.. you can find photoshop tutorial from google search.. thats wat i did last time.. learn by myself.. hehe.. but alot of hardwork..

yup..my advice is to learn photoshop to do desktop customization.
skins, icon, wallpaper etc etc are all depends on creativity using photoshop.. =p
and if u ask mr. google, he has lots of tutorial for u to grab.. tongue.gif

dont have wor .. i just download and click the .exe file to use .. the setting dont have STARTUP on window ... i need click the .exe files everytime i restart pc.. anyone can help ?

create a shortcut of RKLauncher.exe and put it in your Startup folder. smile.gif

hmm.. thats why.. becoz since you didnt install it.. so its not in the registry of your comouter system.. so the automatic start up option is unclickable.. hehe.. i think so.. =P

Need an advice here. Does using Visual Styles, Samurize configs, Findexer, RK Launcher or everything that has anything to do with desktop modding can effect system in some way? or effect on registry or something, you know because of some of the programs change registry rite? because recently my system got something wrong. I don't know if it have anything to do with this modding thing or simply because viruses because I scan using AVG say no virus in my pc. icon_question.gif

And one more thing, between visual styles and Windows Blind, which is much better? icon_question.gif

actually modding your desktop is at your own risk.. not to its not good lah.. cause sometimes we may make mistake and cause the error.. so i cant really tell will effect your system or not..

yes. mods that involve registry hacks will definitely affect your registry. what's wrong with your system?

IMO, Windowblinds skin is an enhanced version of visual styles, with transparency support, drop shadows etc.
go for visual styles if you prefer minimal look. or windowblinds if you like bling-blings on your desktop.
i personally go for windowblinds. biggrin.gif

I don't really know what's the real problem is. It only happen recently, never happen before. You see, my internet connection is based on WiFi wireless provided in my university. Then suddenly it stated Limited Wireless Connection and I can't connect the internet. Even tried repair the connection and unplug the wireless device not helping. So, first I uninstall my wireless device the reinstall the driver. Secondly, I scan with Registry Booster and it fixed all the bugs. And my problem is solved. So, i don't know if it has something to do with registry or because of the wireless driver but I suspect it has something to do with svchost.exe. Don't really know what it is though. Right now just using Windows Classic style with no added VS,Samurize, RK Launcher whatsoever. Still afraid to use it until I know the real problem. Haha, kinda long unrelated explanation. Do you get it?

And about the VS and WB, what about system related info, like memory, processor, registry. Which one is more optimize. Read it somewhere that even WB use less memory than VS. Is it true? I need full knowledge about this kind of thing before using it again. rclxub.gif

why don't you try to use WinSockXP Fix? i've used it before to repair my connection. but try it at your own risk. tongue.gif

hurm..yeah desktop modding sometimes can results in performance drawback..
rules of thumb: always know what u've modded, u've changed and optimize ur mod.. tongue.gif

i always avoid using transformation pack like VTP, yeah i've used it before and i'm not satisfied at all..gave me headache with some annoying effect and changes that lower my pc performance.. besides now i think vista theme is not that pretty blush.gif

and for samurize, i only make config for shortcut (as i hate shortcut icons on desktop and for my convenient) and also little bit media player info..that's all.. and set those config to use as low resource as possible, the view refresh and so on, as u dont need to refresh ur shortcut frequently, it's always the same anyway... tongue.gif
system monitoring config use lots of resource i think.. hehe, i tried before and sometimes caused my pc so lagging as u've to constantly refresh view to get updated graph etc etc..
yes i've compared those configs resource usage! sweat.gif
