20th goal of the season sir boot. Unless you meant to say his 21st goal will be on next Saturday.

it was his 21st in all competitions!

personally for me it was more like zhirkov appreciation week though. he was slightly guilty for not sticking close enough to carew, but i'd give the benefit of the doubt to him as young's cross was an absolute nightmare to defend. even ashley would've struggled to intercept that, such was the quality of the delivery. that goal could've knocked the confidence of any defender, more so one who's still new to the epl. instead, yuri comes out all guns blazing by winning TWO penalties and serves up a beautiful assist for malouda! easily his best game in a blue shirt, and the timing of those penetrating runs were breathtaking! he knows he doesn't have the physique so he makes up for it by ghosting in between defenders at blinding speed, and villa just couldn't handle him today.
i'm not going to make light of lampard's contribution either, as he made the breakthrough, with the first and last goal particularly highlighting the right place, right time instinct of our no.8. he was instrumental throughout the game and deserved his four goals.
another unsung hero in midfield was mikel. made countless interceptions/tackles and was very composed in possession, regardless of how many times he got closed down. used his strength to nonchalantly shrug off challenges, and some telling forward passes show that carlo is slowly coaxing out the other part of his gameplay which we all know exist.
malouda continues to be our most in-form player and the two goals highlight the frenchman's sky-high confidence. both were well taken first time shots, and friedel had no chance with either of them.
last but not least a special mention goes out to kalou who had the most difficult chance to convert from a tight angle, and did it with unerring accuracy. a sweet strike after good unselfish play by nico, who was a bit unlucky himself not to get a goal.
7 goals again, without didier drogba in the team. it really is becoming a question on whether we actually play better without him, as each player needs to work extra hard when there's no option to play a long ball.

old trafford next!
