Your comparison should be between NEX3/5 vs Nikon D90 vs A550 VS Canon 550D smile.gif

Impossible, even DSLRs have trouble too sweat.gif

You bump up ISO,you'll get noise, when you get noise, there's lack of details. So how?

Better invest in a 5D Mark 2 lar biggrin.gif but prepare at least 6k for that

NEX3 isn't on the same level as the other 2 as it's a "mirrorless DSLR" with DSLR picture quality

S90,G11 and LX3 are awesome PnS(compact cameras) but are totally no match for the NEX3 in terms of Image Quality and versatility.

DSLR Image Quality vs compact camera quality.Isn't it obvious?

And yeah, usable ISO range goes up to 3200.Take that!

One tip: Choose "Portrait" and try to go as close to your subject as possible.Your camera will mostly choose the smallest F value(biggest aperture) while increasing shutter speed.

Compacts due to their very small sensors find it very difficult to produce "bokeh" unless the subject you're focusing on is very close(5-10cm).Even my LX3 with a large sensor for a compact, can't produce bokeh well unless i focus pretty darn close.

Your best bet to get portrait bokeh shots is to upgrade yourself to a DSRL with a cheapo 50mm F1.8 laugh.gif

Budget of RM2000, why not consider Nikon D3000 instead? smile.gif

p/s:

1) DOF depends on the aperture range of the lens itself.
2) 18-55 is a zoom lens
3) Do you know what is a live view in the first place? hmm.gif

How about checking out samples of the pictures taken by each of the cameras you mentioned. What's nice to you might be that so for others

Nikon D3000 not in my list anymore but if anyone have any thought between sony a290(or 390,they are the same anyways) and eos 1000d, based on my need here :
-DOF based Get a Prime lens like a 50mm f/1.4?
-macro Get a macro lens or a macro adapter like Raynox 250?
-potrait Prime Lens for shallow DOF?
-outdoor (but not really far one, maybe like watching people play table tennis, not soccer) Wide angled lens like 10-22 or zoom lens like 18-55?Or a 28-270 to cover most range?
-low light situation (attic area,ur own room at 7.30 pm) Prime lens like 50mm f/1.4 ?Zoom lens with low aperture value like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8?Flash gun like the speedlite series to light up your subject or for bounce flash?
-night Prime lens for faster shutter speed? Flash gun unit?Or can use kitlens with high ISO?Use a tripod for long exposures?

Don't all these features depend quite heavily on lenses? mellow.gif You're like comparing between compact cameras biggrin.gif

Any specific features u want? : Looks good, slim, matte if possible, easy to tweak main settings

Please recommend. Advice on other brands if better too. I'm also curious why is S90 more expensive than 300HS. Lastly where to buy? Btw i'm leaning towards S90 and the only problem is that i don't get it why at this age it does't have HD recording. Please advice. Thanks in advance.

You could get a Canon 500D with 18-55 for around RM2.4-2.5k .You want HD video recording??Guess what! 500D does 1080p instead! biggrin.gif

D90 mana boleh,over budget bro! biggrin.gif That's like 3k+

I guess the kit lens can do a sufficiently decent job here .But don't expect a really shallow DOF or a really long zoom mellow.gif

Lenses!Bro!That's what DSLR world is mostly about ! biggrin.gif

p/s: I didn't know you watch animals on stage, intending to snipe them from afar biggrin.gif Then save up for a cheap 55-250 IS lens for around RM900.

The difference between 550D and 500D isn't by far much.An 18mp, newer APS-C sensor for the 550D with the same iFCL metering system used in the more expensive 7D body and some other minor changes.

Do look out for reviews like this one here

http://www.goldfries.com/photography/canon...-camera-review/

500D with 1855 is around RM2.4k while the 550D is around RM2.8k.So there's about RM400 of difference there.Pretty much up to you to judge whether the improvement in specifications/ergonomics are worth the extra $$

Oh ya, there's also the Nikon D5000 to ponder about biggrin.gif

By choosing a system, you will need to know:-
-How large is the user base / community support.
-Available lenses and accessories available under this system.
-Service availability and it's ease of access (how hard to get help and effort to get a part or services).
-How much it differs than to maintain other systems. (how much you are paying for the same service compared to others, the more rare, the more you need to fork out?).

Ending words, having built-in stabilization is NOT the must / ultimate thing in my honest opinion.

I smell Canon~ biggrin.gif tongue.gif

I think i would prefer the IS to be in the lenses rather than the body.A question: Is the IS in an Alpha body better than the ones in Canon lenses? hmm.gif

Does the IS in Canon lenses differ in quality?Or all the IS are the same? hmm.gif

Megapixels are quite important if you pixel peep or you like to crop. Else, for just 4R printing purposes 6mp is more than enough biggrin.gif

And remember, megapixels does not mean details. Megapixels only allows you to "zoom in" more without the picture getting pixelated

Details and sharpness on the other are totally different things all together. This depends on the lens,in built processor, sensor, noise present,Aperture and shutter speed used, image stabilisation?

Do u know that noise also affects sharpness and details? And the way in built in built noise reduction works?

p/s: i'm pretty sure most modern compacts out there have in built image stabilisation .You should be more wary when shooting at low light rather than in the bright day

Dear all sifus here:

I am new in photography ( beginner), looking to buy new DSLR,

currrently using normal DC, Lumix FX50

Type of camera/lens/accesories : DSLR camera
Budget : RM3-4Kinclude kitlens
Your Location : JB ( any good shop In Jb recomended)
Preferable brand : Canon or Nikon
Type of photography u want to do : Landscape or Portrait, holiday use,
Any specific models in mind? : D90/Canon 550D
Any specific features u want? : light and easy to handle, and portable

should  I just take the body and pair with better lens or just take the standard lens kit?

i read  here,17-50mm f2.8 should be better compare with standard kits esp when indoor with limited lighting.

pls enlighthing me.
thank you very very much
*
This points more towards 550D.It's easier to use, lighter and smaller but handling might not be that good.Go try it at shops and see which you like

My advice is to get the kit lens first.Beginners should start off with basic stuff right? tongue.gif Why spend loads of $$ when you don't even know which or what lens you like?

The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is optically more superior than the kit lens. The price tag of around RM1.8k for the VC version compared to the RM400 of the kit lens, does say something right? biggrin.gif

NEX-3 isn't a point and shoot camera bro!It's a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in a compact size!In short, it's a DSLR!

If you specifically want a PnS, try considering the upcoming LX5,Canon S90,Canon G11 and IXUS 300HS
