FAQ
Q: What is Android?
A: It is an open sourced mobile OS by Google

Q: What is the current version of Android?
A: 2.2 for most handsets, 2.3 rolling out over the next few months, with 3.0 codenamed Honeycomb out soon.

Q: What is Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread?
A: They are codenames for Android versions named after delicious pastry/desserts and in alphabetical order. Froyo – 2.2, Gingerbread - 2.3

Q: Why Android phones have a chin?
A: Only HTC’s phones have them, for me they do prevent scratches when placing the phone down

Q: If I buy a phone, can it upgrade to a higher version?
A: Some manufacturers will provide it, but if there is not one, you can always rely on xda-developers.com to provide one. So far, only HTC and Motorola are the best at providing upgrades.

Q: What manufactures are on board this Android’s ship
A: Lots, Including HTC, Samsung, LG, Dell, Motorola, Sony Erricson, Acer and lots more to come.

Q: Does Android have Chinese input?
A: Google provides it’s infamous pinyin input. HTC’s IME have handwriting, pinyin, zhuyin, changjin and strokes. Not only that, there is always other IMEs that supports other languages such as Japanese, Greek etc.

Q: How is the web browser?
A: In terms of technology, they support nearly the same thing, both are equally fast in terms on general use the same hardware

Q:Copy & Paste?
A:Yes, system wide, as long there is a text box for text input

Q: Does Android supports multi-tasking?
A: Yes

Q: Where is the task manager?
A: There is no official task manager, as Android manages phone resources “auto-magically”. However, there are task managers in Adroid Market.

Q: How come I can’t receive MMS/ Connect to 3G / Edge
A: Means two things, wrong APN settings or you din’t activate the mobile network. For the APN settings, refer to your telco’s website, there should be a tutorial to tell you how to connect.

Q: What is this “Google Experience”
A: Just means it uses the vanilla Android, no “crap”.

Q: What is HTC Sense?
A: UI layer from HTC, just like Touch Flo for WinMo. Concentrates on integration between people, software apps, and social networks.

Q: What is Moto Blur?
A: Another UI layer from Motorola, it sucks, period.

Q: What is Nandroid?
A: A full backup (I really mean every freaking thing) software that is built in to the recovery image

Q: What is recovery mode?
A: A alternative mode to the normal OS, can be accessed by holding the HOME and POWER button together while turning ON

Q: Does Android/Hardware support kinetic scrolling, animations?
A: Yes

Q: Does Android/Hardware support multi-touch?
A: This is hardware and software dependent. Currently HTC sense and Android 2.0 and above uses multi-touch.

Q:Is the screen really sensitive?
A:Other than HTC Tattoo, most of the phones use a capacitive touch screen, the same technology as the iPhone which also allows multi-touch.

Q: How does rooting works?
A: It essentially adds two files to the system folder (su and superuser.apk). It is just like installing a computer driver that provides direct access to the hardware.

Q: What benefits does rooting gives?
A: Quite a lot, some market apps depend on root.
Currently rooting gives you the following:
Bluetooth File Transfer(OBEX)
Put apps folder on SD card (app2SD)
Full Backup
Full control over the phone

Q: What is the risk of rooting?
A: Essentially, zero, a hard reset will bring it back to it's previous state.

Q: What is a ROM?
A: A rom is an image, kinda like a photo that contains the necessary data to run phone. Also referred to as Firmware or OS

Q: Is there official ROM updates like Nokia or Iphone(HTC phones)?
A: Yes, Look for it in HTC's website, most phones uses OTA(over the air) updates, means it will automatically update if avalaible.

Q: What is a bootloader?
A: It is a piece of software that executes when you start the phone.

Q: What happens when a bootloader is locked, signed or encrypted?
A: You can't have a complete custom rom as you can't change the kernel

Q: So, why do people say I need to flash it?
A: Its like changing your phone's clothes and may gain abilities such as Root Access, Android Market, Cool themes and they are generally faster than the originals.

Q: What is flashing, it is dangerous?
A: It is not as dangerous as it used to be, there are now two to three layers of protection if something goes wrong. However there is still a chance that something will go wrong but that is like 1 in 100000 chance, if you followed the instructions correctly.

Q: How come I don’t have the Android Market?
A: Units from some countries such Malaysia, Vietnam are replaced SlideMe market, which is a inferior version the Android market. To get it refer below.

Q: What do I have to loose when flashing to a custom ROM?
A: A wipe is needed, means contacts, sms will be gone (you will need to backup and restore after flashing)
APN settings will not be inside, you will need to enter it yourself
When claiming warranty, you will need to flash it back which some people may consider a hassle.

Q: Is there anyway to disable 3G/HSDPA until required?
A: Yes, turn off mobile network under wireless settings in the settings, you can also force it to connect to GSM networks only.

Q: What is APN?
A: It is a set of settings that is used by the phone to connect to the Internet using 3G/HSPA via your telco (DiGi, Maxis, Celcom). Also need to make MMS work.

Q: What are the APN settings?
A: APN settings for Maxis, Digi and Celcom are available below

Q: So, how do I get Android Market?
A: The best way is to just flash to a custom Rom that contains Android Market.

Q: How come my Android Market only have free apps?
A: Install market-enabler(Google it)

Q: How do I buy from Market and how do I pay for it?
A: You will need a Google Checkout Account that links to your credit card

Q: I got market, how come I can’t download anything
A: Market uses port 5228 to communicate, make sure that the port is not blocked

Q: Is there any GPS software for android?
A: So far there are a few, Papago X5, Ndrive, Co-pilot, Sygic, and Google Navigation. Currently MFM(malfreemaps) or MSM(malsing maps) have Papago X5 maps only. Sygic and Google do have maps for Malaysia, but they are not as complete as MFM or MSM’s maps.

Q: Does PapagoX5 works with MFM maps?
A: Yes, get the X5 version and paste it in the "maps" directory in the SD card

Q: How much does PapagoX5 cost?
A: Online shops sells for 2280 NTD or RM 200+ Rumored to cost around RM 150+ locally.

Q: Does PapagoX5 supports android 2.1?
A: Yes only with the x5.1 patch and new data files

Q: Where can I download PapagoX5 SEA?
A: You can download them at the following links, you will need a unlock code to use it.
http://dl2.papago.com.tw/download/Papago/A...90818_MY+SG.zip
http://www.papago.com.tw/andsea/PAPAGO_SEA_090717.apk

Q: No Garmin?
A: Garmin said they are working on it, no release date though. However do note that garmin are releasing phones with them, it is unlikely they will release as a software package.

Q: There is no file manager, where can I get it?
A: I would recommend the Astro File manager from Android Market

Q: Does it support Exchange/ ActiveSync / Outlook?
A: HTC sense does have support for it, official support comes in version 2.0 and above

Q: Does it supports MS Office?
A: Quickoffice that comes with HTC’s phone does a great job viewing them. For editing and other features, check the Market

Q: Does it have Adobe Flash?
A: The vanilla Android does not have flash, but HTC’s Sense phones do have them but, very slow. Android 2.2 and above supports the real flash 10.1 beta

Q: Does it have a PDF reader?
A: Yes, comes with HTC’s phones or you can download Adobe's version from the market(2.1 and above)

Q: Does it have like a PC suite thingy?
A: Some manufacturer such as HTC may provide one, but you are better off syncing to the cloud and editing within Google Contacts/Calander.

Q: Will it connect to the internet when connected to a computer?
A: No, unlike WM, it does not do so. But you may set up a adhoc connection to your laptop.

Q: Does it have a backup software?
A: There are plenty on the market, most people are using Sprite Backup, My backup Pro, and backup for Root (Requires Root)

Q: Can android let us stored the sms/email in the sd card? (jajac)
A: Unfortunately, no. If you are looking for backups, most backup software will do that. If you do Gmail, email is actually not stored locally at all.

Q: Does the Android have a future?
A: It has the highest adoption rate of all platforms (since iPhone already saturated most markets).

Q: What games are avalaible?
A: There are lots of games including some fun ones like Labyrinth, Bonsai Blast etc. Selection not as wide as the App Store though, FPS and some 3d intensive games are still available but you will need the high end android devices to run.

Q: Is Android truly open?
A: No, there are some closed source parts, such as Google’s Apps

Q: Where can I download the SDK
A: developers.android.com

Q: Is Rooting/Flashing permanent?
A: No, it is possible to return to its original state by flashing the original rom (Obtainable from manufacturer’s site).

Q: If I restored it, is it detectable during warranty claims?
A: Just like the iPhone, it is quite impossible, so far, flashing/ rooting DOES NOT void the warranty.

Q: Does Android have limitations compared to other OS?
A:
Can’t send or receive files (2.0 and below)
App choices not as good as Apple’s App Store

Q: What is the "Class" thing on micro SD cards?
A: It indicates the data transfer speed of the card, the higher the better.

Q: So, which micro SD card class should I get?
A: Always get the highest class available (class 8), the difference between classes is noticeable.

Q: I just installed Modaco / custom roms, some of my applications how can't start and I have to force close, how can I fix this?
A: You will need to do a wipe in the recovery mode to fix it

MISC Questions

Q: I have a WinMo phone, can it run android?
A: Technically yes, practically no. See xda-developers.com to see if you phone supports it.

Actually, even in Android 2.0 SDK, the OBEX is not fully confirmed yet. The problem is not that Google doesnt want to allow bluetooth. They are not like Apple - block bluetooth except for headset. Problem is, their release on the Bluetooth API is not that appealing and Google didnt want to release something that will not be that appealing to Android users smile.gif If OBEX is released in Eclaire, I still doubt it will be that functional though. Android is progressing really fast, so new updates etc are expected to flow really soon. I mean, cupcake (1.5) was out when I bought my HTC Hero. We had 1.6 and now 2.0 released already. Less than a month~

So fast that Hero skips 1.6 and jumps straight to 2.0..haha..

I'll get 8GB Class 6 for sure, since the price different is not much, and it's faster.
Class 6=6MBytes/sec, and same goes to other numbers. The higher the number, the better the speed.

*
Create the following in your SD card.

Sdcard > Media > Audio > Ringtone

This will automatically set up all mp3 in your ringtone selection.

Alarms - Mp3 as alarm
Notification - Mp3 as sms sounds and so on.

I have organize all the music, ringtone...etc folder in the media folder.
i'm able to get all the music mp3 after i copy the mp3 files to the SDcard.
but for the ringtone i couldn't see it.
and furthermore when i try to use Ringdroid to customize some ringtone, it's able to be selected but it will be gone after i reset the phone.

Hi, i have bought my Hero for about a week now... So far I love it... but still trying to explore the Max potential of this android device.

I check around the forum & I realise a lot of tips on how to root the Device... is all Very Technical for me!! it sounds to me..without rooting etc.. it will not works well.. Im not good with programming all those... so please bear with me sad.gif I only know how to install/ unistall normal application. whatever Background things i really dont dare to touch.

I think i have no problem following instruction in flashing the rom.. BUT I DONT REALLY UNDERSTAND WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THAT?

what benefit can i get from doing that? so far im happy with the device... just that my phone doesnt come with the Android Market... the applications available in SLIDESE all kinda useless.. and very little.

Maybe I found a reason why I need to root my hero? can any1 give me more tips on this?

I added some question and answers that u guys asked as some more FAQs about PapagoX5

Added the following

Is it really it will be faster than original ROM when you root android and put mod ROM inside ? How can that be ? Some people says that kinda lags when you scroll the screen after apply-ing the mod ROM.. And also how to install flashrec.apk into htc magic when malaysia htc magic does have market to install linda file manager like in the website http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-ro...c-in-one-click/ Any help to install it using other file manager ?

rooting won't make it faster, modded roms do. On why they are faster it is because they have some optimizations in the kernel and in the rom to speed it up. If that is so, regarding why HTC din't do the optimizations, I suspect they will not risk their reputation on non-matured (newer) software, plus the more stuff u add, maintainace will get more and more difficult.

Without the file manager, u can use the browser, refer to the htc hero rom tutorial on the 1st page

The modded ROMs will make the device faster but if during the mod process something we did wrong then it will be laggy right. And not all ROMs are fast right.. some are a little laggy ??
I also wanna ask. This rooting tutorial http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-ro...c-in-one-click/ . Is it capable of rooting all HTC Magic SPLs ?
And also how do you unroot the rooted and modded ROM for HTC Magic ?
I also wanna ask what is pre-installed inside the HTC Magic when purchased ? Does it have youtube app ? Can the HTC Magic watch youtube ?
Can we update the HTC Magic from android 1.5 to 1.6 officially ?

Q: What is APN?
A: It is a set of settings that is used by the phone to connect to the Internet using 3G/HSPA via your telco (DiGi, Maxis, Celcom). Also need to make MMS work.
*
i think we should start including APN settings in this FAQ for easy reference. Or is there somewhere in LYN forum that already has the list?

All roms support the viewing of almost all languages(except hebrew, arabic), for the input method, you can download google pinyin from market.

If i upgrade to "3.0-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed", do i need to apply the "2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-chinese-signed"? i am a chinese user. Another problem is, i never wipe my Hero during rooting, will it occurs some side effect after that?

the 2.8 will override the 3.0 stuff if you do so.

Thanks, MaggiMee. Now my build number is " MoDaCo Custom ROM 3.0" but i still feel laggy. The internal phone storage i left is 93MB. After rooting, suppose all application will install into my SD card, yet, why my internal phone storage is that low?

I don't feel laggy with it though, no, it will still install on the device, to install on the sd card, you will need to format ur card to ext3

The hardware is identical. The only real difference is warranty this assumes that you flash into a custom rom (which is generally better).

Hi MaggieMee

I want to flash CustomRom to my HTC magic, the "one click root" method can't work, thus I follows the create "Gold Card" route
, here.

At Section II Step 5,

My HTC Magic CID is
02544d534430344738b078d399009c60

Thus the correct Reverse String of the CID should be
06c900993d870b837443034435d44520

However, using QMAT tool, the reserve String function return to me
609c0099d378b03847343044534d5402

Am confuse which reverse string to use,

Thanks in Advance

Reversal in base 2 aka binary(10101010101010010010101001), reversing not in the traditional thinking. So, use the QMAT one.

Go buy an Unlock Code from XDA Developers. I did it before. It works. Try to get a good, popular seller. I bought mine for 10 POUNDS. Long ago. All the best.

You can't do that unless you have Android 2.2 or Root your phone(will void your warranty)...
For camera, if not mistaken the default setting, they save it in your SD card alr...

A: Quite good actually, just a notch lower than iPhone’s Safari, most non-iPhone users don’t mind.
I seen videos of Android's browser, and it seem to load pages faster than Safari. Why is it still worse than Safari?

Desire's browser seems to be faster, as seen in this YouTube video. Of course the 1GHz SnapDragon processor helps.

The Android version also affects the speed. After upgrading my Hero from 1.5 to 2.1, I can feel the speed improvement.

The browser in Android 2.2 and beyond will be even faster, based on what was demoed against an iPhone at the recent Google I/O conference.

Hi Michael, you can install a program called Juicedefender. it has a widget that can toggle APN on/off. If its off your 3G will not connect

Hi LYN forumers,

I'm interested in getting an Android phone and have tested the HTC Desire. I was really looking forward to getting one until, after testing, I realized it did not have a particular feature, which is very important to me.

It seems that Android does not allow searching the phonebook using fields other than the name field. Eg. I could type in a person's email address or company name, and it will show me all entries matching the search condition. I was disappointed that it couldn't do this.

However, I'm still interested in getting an Android phone. Therefore, can the LYN forumers let me know if there are any 3rd party app which allows me to do this (ie have a more powerful phonebook app) or have I been mistaken that it does not have this feature.

I hope someone can help me out. Thanks! smile.gif

There's HTC Incredible and HTC Mondrian set to be announce soon, but my guess is that it'll probably only arrive in Malaysia anywhere around October or December.
Currently, HTC Desire is the best model for android. A lot of owners for it too, so you can definitely expect good support here in Malaysia.

So does HTC Legend. Simply turn off Mobile Network should ensure no data leakage due to snyc'ng or status updates.

Well if you refer here:PDA Gadget (MidValley) you can see the difference in price between AP and Ori set.
As to differentiate between AP and ori, my guess is that ori has SiS sticker on it. Plus, when you register the phone in Sis website, it will acknowledge the authenticity and provide you with 2 years warranty.

Standard AP set gives you 1 year warranty from the shop, but please realise that LCD screen warranty usually is between 1 month-3 month only. This one, you have to confirm with the shop itself.
I think to be safe, you should gather info such as the latest pricing for both AP and original.

However, I'm still interested in getting an Android phone. Therefore, can the LYN forumers let me know if there are any 3rd party app which allows me to do this (ie have a more powerful phonebook app) or have I been mistaken that it does not have this feature.

I hope someone can help me out. Thanks!  smile.gif

Hiya,

There is a built in function in Android to search for anything (name, mail, application, etc)
Its called the QSB Quick Search Box

just to add downloaded the newer version of HTC sync - 2.0.33

even followed some advice on the net of updating the drivers from the SDK but with no access.

I can pretty much deduce that the problem is with the drivers as checking the driver properties tells me this

"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Is there anyone that can help me...this is getting frustrating as I'm not having my contacts, tasks, etc with me.

Hi PRO out there, hope you guys can solve this issue for me, I just bought a new HTC Wildfire and I've copied all the contact from my old Nokia phone to this new phone, and the contact are shown in the "Phone" function, but since I've saved a set of contact into my Sim Memory as a backup, so the Sim Memory's contact also shown in the "Phone" function as well, so which mean now I've duplicate contact under the "Phone" function, so is there anyway to restrict to not show the contact from Sim Memory?

A:Other than HTC Tattoo and HTC Wildfire, most of the phones use a capacitive touch screen, the same technology as the iPhone which also allows multi-touch.

Is there an PC Suite available for android phones like the normal phones? For the normal phones, the PC Suite enables the user to amend the contact details, send sms, transfer files, etc (all in one suite) from a personal computer. So much easier than to handle these applications on a small hand phone. Which are the better android PC Suite available on the market?

Just want to share a quick work around on how to delete your GMail contacts from your Android phone.

I've had this problem whereby my HTC Desire automatically grabs all the contact from my GMail. Now this may be good for people who wants to have your email contact in your phone. But for me, this has created duplicated contact. For example, if I have a friend name Tom listed in my phone contact and I've used GMail to email Tom (tom@email.com) there will be a duplicated contact on my phone. One with phone number and one with email address only from Google.

Here's how you can delete the duplicate Google contacts.

Before you begin, you should disable Sync option under Settings. This will prevent your phone from syncing with Google once you've deleted this your Gmail contacts. This will also prevent your phone from automatically sync-ing with Google again and grabbing contacts from your Gmail once you've deleted your Google contacts.

So to delete your duplicate Google contacts, go to People > click 'Menu' button > View. This will show your contact group and you should see a group called 'Google'.

Next, untick, 'Phone' and 'SIM' group. This will hide your phone and SIM contacts on the People contact.

Press the 'Back' button and now you should be seeing only Google contacts which is a list of name and their email address.

Click on the 'Menu' button and select 'Delete'. This will show a check box next to your contact. Hide the keyboard and press 'Menu' button again. Next, press the 'Select All' option and then tap 'Delete'. This will delete all the GMail contacts off your phone.

Hope this will help you out. smile.gif

Yo. What I did is to remove the 3G profile.

Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names

I removed mine and it doesn't look to connect to 3G anymore.

But the downside is that you can't do MMS anymore, me thinks.

I am trying to figure out if there's a way for me to sync my Outlook Task / To-do and notes with my Android phone. Other than using Touchdown (which my HTC already support Exchange), are there any app or workaround?

You don't use Google Calendar and Google Task websites?

Ok I am not sure if this is the solution that you are looking for or not but take a look at the following links:

Hi guys,

been drooling on Android phones drool.gif

i got few questions,

I see that that are many Android phone but the hardware (CPU,GPU,RAM) are all different?
Can tell me what is the recommended (safe but not high-end) spec for a smooth and great user experience. (maybe beautiful) hmm.gif
or maybe high-end spec needs high-end hardware?

and does some application or games need minimum spefication to run?
eg.
QUOTE
Q: What games are avalaible?
A: There are lots of games including some fun ones like Labyrinth, Bonsai Blast etc. Selection not as wide as the App Store though, FPS and some 3d intensive games are still available but you will need the high end android devices to run.

Help! My contacts have all been scrambled, I think after installing Vonage, now uninstalled.

I cannot open the usual Contacts screen, get only one person. I do not see any Contact folder on the SD. I can still indirectly see most of the numbers via other apps, eg, Lookup on Voice Dial gets the correct numbers but I don't know from where.

111

Hi again,

Haven't solved this yet. I've entered new numbers and they only show up one by one if I search the name. Old numbers still not easily accessed after recopying from SIM. Still get a message No Contacts Found.

Can anybody explain to me, into which folder/directory new numbers go, which the Contacts folder should be placed, so maybe I can repair it?

If you wan it cheap you can actually get contract from Telco like Maxis and Digi.. HTC Aria is a good choice.

The games are fun and all phone support those games. Some games require newer firmware only. Still, you can update it to the latest version is the maker of the phone releases the new version for it.

hi,

I 'm using HTC Touch cruise with original wm6.1 rom .
applications i m using a lot ie.
MS excel,
MS word
MS outlook and
mapking for GPS.
I m also using activesync to sync and copy data to/from my win7 compaq notebook.

Thinking of upgrade to new wm 7 pdaphone or Android pdaphones.

Questions:

1.same application, will i face any problem if i change to Android
pdaphone?

AND i need to read/edit excel/word/contacts/appt. in the phone as well.

Does the android auto sync with the outlook in my compaq win7 notebook as well?

Nope. There are various alternatives for you to choose from in Android. There are many type of apps available for you to edit/create files like excel, word, ppt, for eg. thinkfree office. There are many apps for you to sync with outlook as well, for eg. android manager wifi. Or you could sync to cloud, means your gmail account or ms exchange server.

AND i need to read/edit excel/word/contacts/appt. in the phone as well.
No prob. I m currently using thinkfree office for the above.

Does the android auto sync with the outlook in my compaq win7 notebook as well?
I don't understand what you mean by auto-sync. If you want to sync to outlook you need to connect your phone to your pc. However if you sync to cloud, you can set it auto sync.

TQ for the help.

The only major different I see is support for flash 10.1 in ver 2.2. Android 2.1 also support flash but it is only flash lite.

As far as I know, this auto sync with outlook cannot be done. You have to manually press the sync with outlook. But, this feature might be available already or in the future which I am not too sure as I am using auto-sync to gmail right now.

Thinkfree is free for download at android marketplace. Which phone you intend to buy? Most phones will come with ms office editting software already. Only when u don't like it, then you can search for alternatives.

No. Most of the application is free because they are supported by ads. You want no ads, you pay. That is all.

Task manager, although it makes the phone tend to run faster (due to it killing anything that eats RAM), it can also make the phone unstable. As some processes will indefinitely start back up again, and starting back up takes resources, and eats processing power, which in turn, makes things worse. sweat.gif

lch78,

Does the android auto sync with the outlook in my compaq win7 notebook as well?

In auto sync, the data in outlook eg.contacts and appt.will auto update whenever i edit my contacts.
btw,how much is thinkfree office?

TQ
*
QUOTE(lch78 @ Jan 6 2011, 10:18 AM)
As far as I know, this auto sync with outlook cannot be done. You have to manually press the sync with outlook. But, this feature might be available already or in the future which I am not too sure as I am using auto-sync to gmail right now.

Thinkfree is free for download at android marketplace. Which phone you intend to buy? Most phones will come with ms office editting software already. Only when u don't like it, then you can search for alternatives.
*
i ve discovered that:

1) can only sync from MS outlook's contacts to device's people , but not from device's people to MS outlook's contacts

2) problems in the outlook's conatct telephone numbers field that android cannot read thus cannot be updated in the device's people

** its better to rely on the android people and keying in separately in the MS outlook for now

anyone has a solution?

wise choice... Gmail contacts can act as backups of contacts as well...

so even if u change to another Android phone, u'll not lose the contacts, and save u the hassles of transferring to the new phone... nod.gif

cybersim2: So many ways:

1) using Google Market website - you find the app, you login to your Google Account on https://market.android.com/, and you login on the Android phone using the same Google Account. You click Install, it will install to your phone, and you don't have to touch your phone at all!

2) using an APK installer file - email it to your Google Account on your Android phone. I prefer this, lazy lah want to plug cables.

3) using an APK installer file with USB cable - plug USB, set Android to Mount as USB, then it will become like External Storage on your PC. Copy the file into the Android phone. Then you Unmount the Android, and use any file explorer software to open the APK file.

For #2 and #3 you need to enable "Allow installation of non-Market applications" in the Settings (for iPhone, need to jailbreak to do this LOL.)

How to associate Android phone to Google Account ? You mean I can login my Android phone using web browser like Chrome ?

Whr to download tis APK file ? If email mean I need to download the APK file 1st b4 I install rite ? 3G Data charges will apply rite.

Do I need to copy it to specific folder or any folder? Wat's the best file explorer for Android ?

cybersim2:

When you turn on an Android phone for the first time (or Reset Data), it will ask you to login to a Google Account.

You can use the phone without logging in, and you can install APK files, but to download apps from the Google Android Market, you need to login with your Google Account.

No you can't log in to your phone via Chrome unless your phone has some proxy service... which you'd have to install first. As far as I know a plain Android installation doesn't have it so you'd have to find a third-party app.

However you can send URLs, text, phone numbers etc. from Firefox and Chrome via FoxToPhone and ChromeToPhone plugins. Google those to see how convenient they are. biggrin.gif

If you are on WiFi, then you won't kena 3G. biggrin.gif

You can install an APK file from any folder on the SD card. I use Astro File Manager but I don't know which is the best.

You can copy APK files, if you have downloaded them. I leave it to the others to answer whether you can copy apps that you download from the Google Android Market to other phones.

susuquan, a similiar game would be Dropwords, though it doesn't allow you to skip to letters that are touching older letters e.g. you cannot type "MAZE" if the letters are "AMZE" for example. When my colleague borrows my phone to play Angry Birds, I borrow his Blackberry to play Word Mole LOL.

there's this thing called AOSP(android open source project).. check it out..
but there's a minimum hardware requirement and all..
there's also cyanogen-mod source that you can port to other devices..
btw u need Linux to compile all the sources... u can use virtual box for that..
here a quick start http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11639834

If your phone are rooted, why not try out an application called [screen shot it]
I'm assuming u using Samsung Galaxy Ace.
Not all screen can be captured the (Back Button + Home) method.

what do you mean stock microsd?
As far as i know to revert back an original rom,
1) by restore back your nandroid backup of your stock rom. (if u did that earlier)

2) download the stock rom, flash the rom just like any other rom.

Remember to do a full wipe. icon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah, I forget to write that I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace. My phone isn't rooted yet, I just let it be ^^;;

Ah I see. I once successfully screen capture but it's only once. So that's mean I have to find apps to screenshot. Thanks anyway =)

cahayaninety: There is a setting:

Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks - Mobile networks - Data roaming (Connect to data services when roaming)

You can easily untick that.

In the Wireless & Networks menu, you can also untick Mobile network (Use phone for data connection when Wi-Fi is unavailable).

I'd say, it is worth to buy an Android, but it is not worth to buy from that ahmoi.

If your device supports >4GB cards, it will support SDHC. The HC just stands for High Capacity, usually used for cards 4GB-32GB sizes.
No recommended brands, as the more popular the brand is, more people want to make imitations of it. Buy from reputable sellers and check out the class as well (class 4, class 6, etc). The higher the class, the faster it is.

Yeah, get the language packs. nod.gif

Rooting, probably no as the language packs are suppose to be native to the Android OS.
Some do have a hell of a time to root. sweat.gif

Contacts?

This is what I did after convert to Android using Gmail:D

1. Use Tansee iPhone Contact Transfer to export your iPhone contact, cvs format.
Refer Tansee. You need latest version for it.
2. Upload/import the file which created by Tansee, cvs.

user posted image

3. Set your phone to sync with Google contact.

Done.

Movie, video clips, mp3, just copy and paste inside the card biggrin.gif

Add this unrevoked's "root friendly" doc wiki to the 1st post please. Not necessarily the most up to the tick confirmed info but still important nonetheless.A big help to most Android phones' purchases decision making for the rest of us here.

Good read on locked bootloader i found while lurking around.

QUOTE
Ever since mid-March, several sources online started to incite fear by reporting that someone discovered that the HTC Thunderbolt's bootloader was locked. Why would that be scary? Because we've all heard that Motorola's bootloaders are locked down, which severely limits how much you can do with a rooted phone, like flash custom ROMs. And Motorola has stated that it intends to do the same for all its future phones. Since the Thunderbolt's booloader is locked and signed, does this mean HTC is now headed down the same path?

No.

The first thing to understand is that the initial fear mongering was due to a huge lack of understanding about the nature of bootloaders. I'm going to explain it here in a clean thread and hope to counter all this misplaced concern for anyone looking for clarification.

What the authors of these reports failed to realize was that almost ALL phones' bootloaders come locked and signed. Always have. The Thunderbolt's bootloader security is no different than any of its HTC predecessors including the Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, and many others. They simply confused a "locked" bootloader to Motorola's bootloaders, which are also locked, but the key difference is the encryption layer that prevents the Moto bootloaders from being unlocked. There's a huge difference between being locked and being unlockable.

In a full root, one of the main objectives is to unlock the bootloader so you can flash custom ROMs. Here is a high-level overview of what happens during a full root:

1) find an exploit that tricks the phone in giving you temporary root privileges for that session. Typically some app has a vulnerability, and a root solution is available when a hacker finds an exploit.

2) Once a hacker has temp root, the superuser (su) binary is installed onto the system to make the root permanent. A user or app can simply call su to gain root privileges at will.

At this point, we've achieved a half-root. The phone is technically considered "root"ed. Now we move on to the juicy part of the root process: unlocking the bootloader.

3) The bootloader's stock firmware (HBOOT) can now be replaced with the pre-release Engineering version, which is a leaked HTC-signed image used when the phone firmware and OS was being developed. Since the image is properly signed, the bootloader accepts the firmware. The Engineering HBOOT comes with S-OFF, meaning it's unlocked by default (it makes sense that when the ROM is being developed, engineers wouldn't want to impose the lock on themselves). Once the bootloader is on the Engineering HBOOT, it is unlocked.

4) Now that the bootloader is unlocked (aka S-OFF, NAND unlocked), the factory recovery program is able to be replaced using the bootloader's fastboot flashing utility. Depending on the root method, you get either Clockworkmod or RA recovery, two widely available homebrew recovery programs.

5) with a custom recovery in place, you have the ability to flash images to various partitions that were previously protected by the bootloader, but now that the bootloader is unlocked, it essentially turns a blind eye to what the recovery image does.

Full root complete.

When the bootloader is encrypted, it means that it's expecting an HBOOT image to be encrypted with a very specific key. The problem is you can't generate the correct encryption on an Engineering HBOOT image without having the encryption key. So... no Eng HBOOT means S-ON remains (aka NAND locked, aka bootloader remains locked). Which means you can't ever have write access to key partitions of the filesystem that a custom kernel/ROM requires: /boot (kernel) and /system (Android OS). Furthermore, with Motorola bootloaders, there's something called an eFuse that checks to see if you've modified the bootloader. Assuming you do get the Eng HBOOT flashed, the eFuse may still kick in because of some checksum mismatch. Its job is to brick the phone when it detects that the bootloader has been tampered with. Ouch.

So will the Evo 3D come with a locked and signed bootloader? Most likely. But does that mean anything of consequence? No. The Engineering HBOOT will be inevitably leaked, a hacker will discover a root exploit, and the Evo 3D will be fully rooted shortly after.

Is there a possibility that HTC starts encrypting their bootloaders like Motorola? Yes. But the Thunderbolt's bootloader is not a valid reason to think that HTC is considering this. In fact, HTC has done nothing to indicate it may suddenly decide to change its existing policies. So relax. Chances are very good that the Evo 3D will be rooted quickly with little fanfare.
http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all-things-root/329819-no-need-panic-about-locked-bootloader.html

Here's hoping that someone will find an exploit in the Desire S soon. tongue.gif

Added on May 17, 2011, 2:11 amOn Li-Ion Batteries.

QUOTE
General Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) Usage:

    • Discharging your LIB fully (or less than 2.4 Volt per cell) is bad for the battery. Every time you do that, it can be said that small part of your battery (some cells) dies (they forever lose their charge). Do not store your batteries depleted, there's a high chance they will die completely or will become very "weak".
    • You cannot restore bad LIBs by overloading/heating/praying. You gotta go buy a new one. They DO degrade overtime, some cells naturally lose the ability to gain/give electricity.
    • Although it is said that LIBs do not have memory, it's not entirely true. LIBs have gauges that monitor performance of cells, and if you do a lot of small charges, it won't let those gauges to monitor a full battery potential, causing an invalid indication of charge level. A complete charge/discharge should be made when battery capacity seems reduced, that will calibrate gauges and they will provide your phone with correct charge level status. A full charge/discharge cycle should be done every 30 (or so) partial charges.
    • LIBs have a shelf-life. Do not buy them to store them. Use them early, use them often, they will die whether you use them or not. Do not buy LIBs to use them in 6 months/year/etc, buy them right before actually using them.
    • LIBs have short lives (in comparison to NiCa batteries, etc). You should expect to buy a new battery in 2-3 years after being manufactured. It is caused by internal oxidation and there's nothing you can do to stop or prevent that.
    • Worst LIB treatment is to keep it at 100% charge level at high temperature (think laptop/phone under direct sunlight, like car dashboard).
    • Best LIB treatment, or LIBs "favorite" charge level - 40%. That's also the usual charge level you buy them with.
    • LIBs don't like heat. For example, while always at 100%, typical LIB in a laptop, at temperatures of 25C (77F) will lose 20% (twenty percent!) of full capacity per year. That capacity loss is reduced to 6% (six percent) at 0C (32F), and increased to 35% loss at 40C (104F). So, keep them cool (LIBs like fridges), don't let your devices sit in the sun or overheat at charge. Also, keep in mind that while in use, battery will be significantly hotter than phone/outside environment

    • LIBs like frequent partial charges/discharges more than they like full charges/discharges.
    • Car "fast-chargers" overtime degrade your battery a little, as they give too much energy to the battery too fast (high voltage). Trickle-charge (USB) is best. They do provide an initial higher capacity charge (high-voltage), but do degrade the long-term battery capacity. General idea is that the slower the charge - the longer (long-term) battery will serve you.

HTC/Google-specific advice:

    • Although this part is somewhat controversial, they do recommend having a complete, full FIRST charge to be made. If time allows, a preferred time for the first charge is 12 hours. This may have more to do with the OS than the battery.
    • Battery on a Android device, in average, will last about a full day with normal use (some videos, mail, calls). That's what you should kind-of expect.
    • Speaking in averages, "idling" 3G/EDGE connection (when phone is sleeping and no data is transferred through 3G), drains almost no energy. Just a little more than having 3G/EDGE radio off completely. So when no apps are using 3G, you don't need to keep it off.

    • Same goes to WiFi connection - although it's on, if there is no data flowing through it, it uses almost no energy.
    • At full throughput (100% data flow), EDGE is using significantly more energy than 3G. 3G is much more energy-efficient than EDGE.
    • WiFi is using more energy than 3G (when both are at 100% use), but since it transfers files much faster and then goes to "sleep", it's actually recommended to use WiFi whenever possible. Since it'll "sleep" more often than 3G, overall it will use much less battery than using 3G.
    • Some bad apps or widgets can use android's "WakeLock", keeping CPU at 100%, screen always-on, or both. I myself have encountered such widget (I won't mention the name, it's in the market) that used a WakeLock to keep CPU spun-up at 100% all the time. That makes a huge impact on battery life. My advice - use a CPU profiling app to monitor the CPU - make sure that CPU slows down by itself when it's not used. So, beware of such widgets/apps. To check for CPU cycles, many recommend OSMonitor (free from market, install it, go to options, sort by "Load" in descending order. It'll give you "busiest" processes at the top). At rest you should be getting about 10-20% for OSMonitor itself, and 1-10% Android System. At rest, everything else should be 0-1%.
    • Android (at least on Nexus One) slows down CPU when not in use by itself, as a built-in feature. Apps that throttle/change CPU frequency, are not necessarily needed.

cybersim2: So many ways:

Have a questions about Contacts.

I accidentally import contact from SIM card twice making the contacts list to have 3 identical entries of all contacts. I'm lazy to delete >1000 contacts one by one. Since I have a backup contact in SIM card, how do I delete all at once and re-import from SIM card?

not rooted not flashed. still in ori condition.

Normally the bottom part of the phone has a bar containing "Phone, Contacts, Messages and Applications"

But suddenly there's only one left which is "Application"
The other 3 disappeared. It's available under the application menu, but i have to click application to access them.

How do i re-add them back into the bottom menu bar?

I was searching around but couldn't seem to find it, hence, i'm posting here. Thanks in advance.

*
you can use "contact remover" in the market to delete multiple contact at once

I need help!!!

Not familiar with the technical stuff.

My HTC Desire running on LeeDroid suddenly gave up on me and keep getting stuck at the reboot screen.

Does anyone know any person or place where I can go to get it fixed? I need my phone working ASAP.

Thanks a lot for your input!

Hi Guys...

Is there a way to disable hard reset? If it can be done, I guess this will be the second strongest security a handphone could have against theft. (The strongest will be a self-destruct phone, something like in mission impossible movie, if it is ever created).

try this,

long press the bottom bar (next to the apps button) -> in the menu pop-up, choose apps.

Repeat the same thing for the other 2 'missing button'.

Someone could have accidentally removed them off the menu bar.

In term of complete map in Malaysia, Papago is the most completed and you can use it offline. In KL/PJ area Google Navigation also not bad and there is user also use Waze... But both required online all the time.

Rooting means

QUOTE
Rooting is a process allowing users of mobile phones, tablet PCs, and other devices running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem. Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. Rooting is analogous to jailbreaking devices running the Apple iOS operating system or the Sony PlayStation 3. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system.
As Android was derived from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device is similar in practice to accessing administrative permissions on Linux or any other Unix-like computer such as FreeBSD or OS

Guys,
i recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S2, G version and rooted with a custom kernel.
Now my screen is sometimes flickering, and i want to send it to warranty.
How can i unroot my phone and restore back to factory setting?

1. Is it enough by performing hard reset?
2. If i am using SuperOneClick to unroot, is there any file that i should download?
3. If i update my phone to latest update, is it will be the same as unroot?

which method should i use? rclxub.gif
or should i follow these step:

u seems panic here.rooting n flashing already void your warranty.just go to settings -> privacy settings -> factory reset or...

1.hard reset can be done by pressing volume up (+) button + home button + power button..as u'll entering recovery mode, only volume button (up n down) can be used and home button to select..press volume down to 'wipe data/factory reset' -> press home key.done!

2/3.Just flash a new firmware on to you phone. Even if it's the same one that's on there.Flashing a kernel doesn't remove the Root but flashing the entire firmware does

To switch back to the original Samsung Launcher (not theme) download Home Switcher from the Play Store.

hello,

wanna ask about Go Launcher app which i downloaded from PlayStore.
i have launched the app with a theme, but now i wanna go back to default/ original theme.
how do i do that?

im using GS3
tq
*
If default Go launcher theme, press the option button next to your home button and select themes. Then click default.

If default Touchwiz UI, try and press the home button when u are browsing in your home screens. There should be a list of choices of launchers, if not then go to settings -->applications-->Go launcher-->Clear defaults. Then go back to your home screen and press the home button, a list should be appeared and select Samsung home.

Been trying Navit, just try Googling about it. It uses openstreet navigational maps, that are homebrewed. Just install the app and download offline maps.
Its no too user friendly, very basic features.

Hi there, I am trying to reverse tether my laptop's internet connection to my android tablet but i found that android does not support ad-hoc wireless networks by default. I also tried using bluetooth or usb/micro-usb instead of wifi to tether to no avail. What can I do to then to connect my tablet to my laptop's internet?

Hi there, I have a Samsung Galaxy S II which is still using the Android 3.0 firmware. I didn't root the OS but I want to know how I can select multiple photos at once in the photo gallery so that I can move my photos faster instead of holding down on each picture and select move to a new folder?

Use file manager instead. For samsung phone, "my file" is the pre-installed file manager.

why when buying an adroid phone at some shop..
after paying the phone price the seller will ask to add some money to register the phone, software warranty, etc.. they said if not do that the phone only can use to make call and msg and other basic things only..
sometimes they will ask for rm200 to do that..
what is it actually??

Could it be so old that it has the Android Market icon instead? Look for "Market" under your Apps. The Play Store used to be called the Android Market.

Seriously though, Malaysia has been selling Android phones with the Android Market since like 2010 at least. Unless you got it as an AP set from some country that doesn't have access to the Market.

Root it, backup your app data (if you have already got 3 stars for Angry Birds) then flash a different ROM that has the Play Store.

I can't help you as to HOW to do it. Google is your friend. Too bad Google isn't China's friend.

If your device is rooted, you can either use App2SD or Terminal Emulator to set the default installation dir to SD card.

If not rooted, then head to Settings> Manage Applications and then choose which app to transfer to SD card. Only one at a time.

Yes, if they have sufficient RAM and storage. For instance, I've a Galaxy Ace that runs on Jellybean.

Yes, you will need a custom ROM. But you'll have to first root your phone to unlock it before installing it.

Nope. Auto brightness off will conserve energy and therefore save battery duration.

Just set the brightness level to nearly the lowest for a better battery life. Plus, you won't be squinting at the screen since its still clear, especially when using a dark background.

Don't think auto brightness will help alot in prolonging battery life. Setting your brightness to slightly higher than 0 should help.

In my honest opinion:
Pros: Disable those unneeded processes before they could re-launch themselves.
Cons: If you've a few unneeded processes, the Task Killer could consume more processes than those unneeded ones.

But if your device is running on Gingerbread and later, you can long press on the Home button to bring out the Task Manager.

Do not let the Task Killer run as auto. Only manual kill the task after you open many apk that seldom used. If you kill the regular running apk, more power is needed when you load it next time.

Changing to a custom ROM involved rooting the phone, which is complicated process and can't be explain by few word. I would suggest u go for other specific website for detail study before proceed. Rooting process may permanently bricked ur phone, be caution. U should only proceed after u fully understand the risk.

Alternatively, i suggest u clean up ur phone (application, cache, etc) and see any improved in the speed.

1) internal storage
2) USB storage
3) SD card

anyone here ca explain this? what is that internal storage actually? apps & system used space ? all apps execution files only (automatic) install on that space? if yes, then the memory available are totally not enough.
what is the USB storage, something just like the space we can use right? is apps will install on the space too?

sd card, this i knew, no need explanation.

Internal Storage, is the place where you store all things you need, like apps and system. SD card is External Storage, so Internal mean inside your phone. Well, there is an apps where you can move certain of your apps to SD Card.

B) what is the USB storage, something just like the space we can use right? is apps will install on the space too?
USB storage should not able to install in there, USB storage is like pendrive/external hard disc thing.

Correct me, if someone found mistake.

Internal storage means the phone's internal storage. your ROM, your system apps, your nandroid backups everything goes there. and so far I've seen, if let say your storage is 16gb, the phone will pick up around 2/3 GB (what I've seen in Nexus 4 so far) and sometimes 4/5 GB (what I've seen in GSG2|i9100g so far) for the system storage. It's actually enough as files with large data such as games/GPS apps will store their resource files at the internal storage.

So there's internal storage and system storage.
Internal storage+system storage=Your phone's total storage

SD card - self explanatory

USB disk (I'm not pretty sure about this) is the USB OTG you plug in to your device.

It seems their security hole is getting serious

Go to Messages, press on the Menu button(beside Home) and then Settings.

Scroll down until you see the MMS settings. Ensure that auto-retrieve is on.

Two ways.

1) Root.
2) Swap internal memory and ext_sd.

Don't ask how to swap, Google is always there to help. smile.gif

It's just changing some script settings only.
