From Original To Custom Rom

The ROM that came with the Malaysian and Singapore version and other Asian countries have patched the root method. However a solution has been devised by Jesterz at xda-developers.
Step 1: Download RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoD river.exe http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
This is the International version/Europe of the ROM
Step 2: Install HTC Sync
NOTE: Win 7 Users - Read http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/24/w...m-in-windows-7/
Alternative Method: Expert users may choose to install the driver only - pure drivers may be obtain from the above link or http://www.the-asylum.com/blog/permalink/h...ndows-7-64-bit/
Step 3: Make a GoldCard http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572683
A Goldcard is SD card that bypasses the CID Lock that HTC's used to check if the phone is from the correct region, just to prevent users from Asia flashing T-Mobile's ROM. Your card will be still usable after this.
Note: I used the card that came with the HERO
Step 4: Flash the ROM that you downloaded in step 1 - Run the EXE and follow instructions
Congrats you have the international version of the Hero's Rom (should have Market). You may stop here or continue with the next step
Step 5: Flash the recovery image by following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613
NOTE: You may want to use the newer version of flashrec http://flashrec.googlecode.com/files/flash....2-20090909.apk
NOTE: If you are lazy to get the Linda file manager in step 9, go to browser and type this "content://com.android.htmlfileprovider/sdcard/flashrec-1.1.2-20090909.apk"
Step 6: Mount your SDcard (by card reader or mounting it from android)
Step 7: Copy the backup img file to a safe place just incase
Step 8: Download the Core MoCaDo's rom NOT CHINESE (you will know why later) http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...com/292018/MCR/
Step 9: Rename the "http://content.modaco.net/hero/2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip" to "update.zip"
Step 10: Copy it on to the root folder(just means don't put it in a folder) of the SD card
Step 11: Boot your to recovery mode by pressing HOME + POWER key while switching on. Stop hold when you reach a menu.
Extra step: Using the trackball, select "nandroid backup" and press the HOME key to confirm
Step 12: Using the trackball select "apply sdcard:update.zip", press HOME key to confirm
Step 13: Grab a sandwich and wait (max 10 minutes)
Step 14: Using the trackball, select reboot phone

MP3 as ringtone or other sounds by naTTan
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1213449
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
There has been 2 - 3 question on how to do this. Personally i think google just made it a bit confusing, but if you understand how the system works it's quite simple.
You can put any MP3 into as your ringtone by playing the music in the Music players this is one of the most simplest way.
There are several all out there that helps set and modify MP3 as ringtone, i personally like Ringdroid, it allows you to choose the mp3 and set it as a ringtone or notification sound at the end.
All above are by using another application to augment the process of putting the MP3 as a ringtone. The most simplest way is by organizing your folders in your SDcard.
This is how i set my folders.
SDcard > Media > Audio > Ringtones
SDcard > Media > Audio > Alarms
SDcard > Media > Audio > Notification
SDcard > Media > Audio > Music
If you set up your folder like above, once you reboot your phone, the OS will automatically set all the mp3 in Ringtones as an option when you go to menu.
All the mp3 in Alarm folder will be selectable when you want to choose a Alarm tone.
And all the mp3 in the notification folder will be able to be used in any app when you try to set a notification tone.
Another tip : If you guys are annoyed that all your mp3 even the one from GPS navigation software comes up in your music playes, or all the pictures come up in the album app, then there is a simple way to remove it.
QUOTE
There’s a common Android problem of unwanted media files appearing in the song list of music players. This annoyingly causes your favorite songs to get mixed in with audio files associated with other apps, such as voice files for a GPS navigation app.
There’s a simple solution for this issue. We’ve already covered how you can hide certain files by changing a folder name to start with a dot, but you run the risk of causing problems with the app that’s linked to those files. Instead, there’s a similar solution: create a “.nomedia” file.
Here’s an easy trick that should only take a couple of minutes to keep unwanted audio files from popping up.
1. On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor
2. Save the blank file as “.nomedia”
Make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”
3. Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing audio files you don’t want to show up.
(Example: If you want to block CoPilot sound files from coming up, place the .nomedia file in the sdcard/copilot folder)
4. Reboot your phone and the files should no longer be viewable
This same trick works for folders containing images or videos that you don’t want to appear in the Gallery app. The files will still be accessible from your original app or an explorer like Astro or Linda, but you’ll finally be able to stop hearing “Turn left” announcements after a great song.
