Red Leaf,

It's a beautiful place if you like nature - the scenery is fantastic. It's expensive place to visit but worth it.
Visited Golden Circle , South Shore, Glacier Lagoon, Snaefellsness peninsular and Blue Lagoon.

Was there end of Nov - days were short and it snowed two days b4 I left Iceland. It was cold - freezing wind.
Stay at Room with a View apartment in Reykjavik for 3 nights, and 3 different country hotels for 3 nights.

Took a private tour with a tour agency in Reykjavik as there were 12 of us. Very good and owner guide very informative - told history and everything about Iceland. (English Expat)

Had lobster feast in South shore, went for super jeep tour to Eyjafjallajökull glacier near the volcano which erupted recently, tried their buffet dinner at country hotels and The Perlan in Reykjavik.
Glacier Lagoon is awesome so is Blue Lagoon. thumbup.gif

From KUL to Lon STN - AirAsia X, London Gatwick to Reykjavik - Iceland Express.
Can use Euro at some places but prefer Credit Card or Iceland kroner.

Went in winter hoping to see the northern lights but did not see any

Might go again - got to save $$ and get a small group - cheaper.

Hope this is some help. When you intend to go?
Most important - get cheap airfare - plan way ahead.
Take tour in Iceland - plenty of travel agency to choose from. (single traveler or group - day tours from Reykjavik)

Well you can if you want to. biggrin.gif
Just prioritize yr spending - on the needs not the wants
Take 2, 3 or 4 years - make that dream come true. I presume you are still young.

This trip was part of 18 days England, Scotland and Iceland trip.
Iceland trip about RM6K exclude flight to STN
Food: can't remember tongue.gif ; some self prepared and some out; took along some tuna, noodles, sambal, etc

Exchange rate then: RM5.5/GBP; RM5/Euro. Rates are so much lower now.

5 months before the eruption. Part of it melted, so not sure how it looks now - caused massive flood, washing away a bridge.

I just saw this thread in here...was in Iceland earlier this year in March, part of a Euro backpacking trip I made. Landed in Reykjavik and travelled the southern reaches of the island all the way to Hofn. This place is really something unlike any other. There's a harsh untamed beauty to this land that simply cannot be captured by mere pictures, videos or words. And that's not even mentioning the northern lights. This is definitely a must on anyone's bucket list. (If u wanna have an idea of what it's like, play Skyrim biggrin.gif that's a very good approximation)

Guys..i jst came back not so long ago. And not sure if there's any Iceland Thread already started here but i couldnt seem to find them.

Anyhow, if there's none, i am opening so if there's any fella that like to go travel Iceland, can ask their questions here.

I can help provide info for Winter time for that's when i went.

Hopefully there's someone else that's been there during Summer. Then i guess anyone who plans to go, will have their questions answered regardless of period.

Depends on where you intend to land - London, Paris, Amsterdam, Oslo, Copenhagen.
Budget airline to Iceland.
KLM code share with Iceland Air with transit in AMS to Reykjavik.

Backpacking - going round he island by bus?
http://www.straeto.is/english/plan-your-jo...edules-and-maps

Note: Nothing is cheap in Iceland except cold tap water (FOC) which is like spring water.
Do not drink hot water from the tap - it contains sulphur

apart from flight ticket i mentioned above..it depends on which season ur going.

If it's winter, then u will need a 4WD. I spend around 3k on car rental. 800 on petrol for a week plus. The 3k included insurance but withour GPS. Bring one..it works on half of the places there. Better than none.

Bus doesnt go many places during winter unless u do NOT plan to go round iceland.

accomodations are far apart from south-west all the way up anti-clockwise to northern area...and expect to spend around Euro 70 for a twin-bed room per night. Some comes with bfast some doesnt. But most have wifi...

and u will definitely need to check out vegagerdin.com every single fooking day on the weather. Else u might die out there. Death from cold is VERY common in iceland that locals dont find it surprise to see someone frozen to death early in the morning on any given day.
And if ur travelling in Summer, chances of u to freeze to death is very low as it's peak season so most tourist will be driving around...hence if ur stuck somewhere, u might catch a dozen cars passing by a day..as opposed to maybe 1 or zero cars per day in winter. Though expect the price of everything to go up by 30% or so...
and lastly, u need to do one heap of a fooking lot research if ur going iceland. because iceland is not ur typical travelling country where u can go there unprepared...especially during Winter season.
*
i will fly to iceland this early october..we plan to rent Honda CRV 4x4 with a roof box (5 adult) which cost us around RM2300 for 5 days. Because of the time constraint we just plan to cover the south area. May I know which area you covered before?

do u manage to get aurora? we plan to use superjeep for this tour sweat.gif

but now..unfortunately since yesterday there is breaking news about volcano eruption cry.gif

thanks for all ur information. We hv booked a land cruiser for this trip which cost us RM3k for 5 days. We estimate the fuel is around Rm1-1.5k until hofn. I hope the volcano eruption right now will not effect our route.

is there any probabilities iceland will hv snow in october? all of us dont hv experience driving during snow. My friend went to iceland last yr early october and he said the temperature are cold but still dont hv snow.

Do u hv any tips for aurora?

Hi everyone,

I am going to get married this coming December, and my fiancee has always wanting to see the northern lights (aurora) in Iceland, and I heard its only available during winter.

Anyone have experience in travelling to Iceland during winter time? Appreciate any suggestions, advice, itinerary etc.

And about the flight, I am not sure how to get there via which airline/transit etc.

Any information or tips is highly appreciated. rclxms.gif

There is a thread on Iceland.

Anyway, the northern lights is a natural phenomena, there is no guarantee that it'll show when you are there.
If your purpose is just for that, you might be disappointed. I was there for a week in winter and never saw it.
For N Lights, other option is Tromso, Norway

Iceland scenery is different unlike other parts of Europe.
It's more of raw beauty.

Iceland is cold and windy. Windbreaker and winter jackets needed.
Many flight options from Europe now. Airlines - WOW Air, Icelandair
Been there in winter and summer.

Hi all,

I am planning to travel to Iceland this coming January for honeymoon.
Any advice or recommendations of itinerary during that particular time of the year?

Also for accommodation, recommended to use AirBnb or go for Hotel (and book tours via hotel)?

So far I am looking at doing some sightseeing (Golden Circle, Ring Road), Blue Lagoon, Northern Lights, maybe some historical/cultural visits (museums, shows etc).

Managed to get rather cheap flight from KL to London direct flight via MAB (former MAS) @ RM2795 return.

Planning to take EasyJet from London to Iceland, priced around RM700 return.

Anyone have any experience in Iceland during winter? Come share share. rclxms.gif

Thank you all in advance. smile.gif

Wow it's probably the coldest month!! Better pack loads of Japanese instant hot pad, fleece and wind breaker! I was in the month of October couple of years back, followed some local tours booked online. I've written my trip over here... Alternatively if I ever go back again I would rather rent a car and go around so I can stop anywhere as I like. If it's tour buses obviously you can't do that. But then again, it can be dangerous as my friend got caught in the middle of no where for almost 11 hours before emergency help arrived. So it really depends. smile.gif

Hi guys, saw this thread hope I am able to help.

There is no guarantee at all if you could see the northern light or not during the winter.

I was lucky to be there 2 years back because that was the peak of Northern Light (2013-2014). So how did I see those beautiful lights? Its all luck. Why I said so? My friend stayed there for 12 nights couldnt see any and I was there for just 5 nights. Its all about weather + luck. Remember during the winter there will be loads of cloud. Winter in Iceland can sometimes get harsh a little with snowstorms and all just be well prepared!

To increase your chance of seeing it, please travel to places without any light interference. Especially outside of city Reykjavik. Of course I rented a car which what I normally do. It is worth to rent a car there if you wish to see the real Iceland.

If you really got no luck, is okay, Iceland have more than just northern lights. Amazing views especially when you are driving around. Go to the waterfalls, lagoons, glaciers, drive past mountains, black sands and many more.

Last but not least, if you live in the city of Reykjavik, MUST TRY Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur sausages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walking distance if you live in the center!

Alright I hope it helps.

Hi guys, saw this thread hope I am able to help.

There is no guarantee at all if you could see the northern light or not during the winter.

So it really depends. smile.gif

The city is it able to walk around to every attraction like sun voyager to the church and others? Or I have to drive around the city?

I guess so, you can check google map for the distance. We only walked to the church and the concert hall (Harpa). Bought 10-15 minutes walk. We walked from Sjávargrillið to Harpa. Reason why Sjávargrillið, I had lunch there and loved it so much I went back for dinner. Lunch is twice cheaper though if you feel like trying. Sushi is darn good! We didn't explore much of the city, spent most our time outside.

To be honest, I am not sure on the average price of normal restaurants.
Because most of the time, I ate street/supermarket/own food.

I only tried once in restaurant (that serve whale meat) but that is more like high end one which cost me bout 30 euros per person.
But that is really high end ones. So for average, I am not sure sorry.

Are you going on Winter?

Iceland popular destination now!

When I went in winter 2009, colleagues and friends thought I was loco.
Their question: Where is Iceland?
Went back again in summer 2011. Those days it wasn't a hot destination.

Previous summer (2015) while in Greenland, heard it was over crowded with new wealth mainland Chinese.

With " Dilwale", Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol movie shot on location in some of the most beautiful places in Iceland, expect bus loads of Northern Indians. Same occurrence in Switzerland (Jungfraujoch) in summer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEIVhBS6baE

Better to go off season to avoid the crowd and higher price.

If you are used to the winter, then it should be alright. But its winter nights are much longer compared to what I'm having now. For example, sunrise at 10 - 11am, sunset around 4. That's all that you're going to get.

No direct change from RM to ISK. U can change to Pounds or Euro and then change to ISK in Europe or Iceland itself. Anyway, credit card is widely acceptable in Iceland to even small stalls. U might not need to change much ISK

didn't take a tour, rented a car and drove the ring road. I would highly suggest you not to go for any tour. DIY is the way to go in Iceland, you wouldn't know what you'll discover if you are to roam around, just a tip wink.gif

My photos are in raw so basically I'll need time to process them. As for the whole trip, we stayed in Airbnb for the entire trip at 3 different locations.

Reykjavik, Vik and Kirkjubæjarklaustur. (so we basically moved from the city and travelled to most of the places in the South, we just travelled to nearby areas whenever we moved from different stays). For the weather, it was raining for the 2nd day when I was there and it was freaking heavy. On my last few days, it started snowing and apparently the road to the Geysir was closed for 6 hours after few hours after we left the area.

Driving wasn't that hard on a nice day but when the wind blows or the snow/blizzard falls heavily, that is when it gets tricky.

Simmin - ISK 2,790 (SGD 32 / €21) – 5 GB of data with ISK 500 worth of call credit (for approximately 30 minutes of call). The SIM card is free of charge.
Vodafone - ISK 4,490 (SGD 48 / €32)- The SIM card first cost ISK 2,000 with ISK 1,000 worth of call credit and 300 MB. Then an additional ISK 2,490 is needed to top to 5 GB of data.
Nova - Nova offered the cheapest and most value-for-money data bundle but due to its limited coverage, we decided not to get it (sorry I forgot to record down the prices).

Prices as of Sept 2015. Sos: http://www.foodiebaker.com/14-things-to-kn...to-iceland-faq/

Spent a week and a half in Iceland in Dec.
Amazing place !

The first week was just raining everyday day which was a slight annoyance but could still do the sights and travel around as the roads were not closed. But because of the rain which means there are clouds all over, could not view the northern lights. So went down to Barcelona for a few days and came back to Iceland the following week when the Aurora forecast was good and saw the lights for two consecutive nights :-)

Will definitely be back again one day, most probably during summer or autumn as it's much more beautiful then.

I'll do a proper write up soon. But I'll say this - if anyone is thinking of going, stop thinking and just go !

UNIQLO would be sufficient for March.

Will you be at Reykjavik or Ayukeri?

Just a heads up -

Icelanders are one of the friendliest country you'll find. You can get all your itineraries and tour arrangement at the Airport. They don't overcharged and it is the same. I would avoid going for Whale watching for March and if you are a Scuba Diver with dry suit license, I'd say go for it! Don't forget the Horse Riding and of course, to the Northern Lights. But if you have bigger budget... get your own tour jeep to the mountainous area where you can view the lights in clear. Living in Iceland a bit and hope my sharing helps!

Best wishes.

Hi,

We will be visiting Iceland this coming 11-15th April.

Day 1
London Gatwick - Reykjavík Keflavik Airport
Þingvellir/Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir Hot Springs/Kerið/Overnight at Selfoss

Day 2
Seljalandsfoss/Skógafoss/Dyrhólaey/Reynisfjara beach/Kirkjubæjarklaustur/Overnight at Vik

Day 3
Skaftafell National Park/Svartifoss waterfall/Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon/Overnight at Vik

Day 4
Blue Lagoon/Reykjavík/Mount Hekla/Overnight at Reykjavik

Day 5
Early flight to Amsterdam

Is the route workable? Can someone advise if a 2x2 car is sufficient for the route we will be driving on?

Thank you in advance for the feedback!

2x2 should be workable if you not using F-roads. Not sure about 2x2 going to Mount Hekla though.

But I'll say this - if anyone is thinking of going, stop thinking and just go !

does that mean in Dec...there tends to be a lot of rain ?

2wd will be sufficient. Get 4wd only if u wish to travel to the highlands and through F-roads only. 2wd banned frmo F-roads. Most likely need to self drive if u wish to travel around the island. Generally safe but check road conditions and weather as some roads might be closed during winter or bad weather.
http://www.road.is/travel-info/road-conditions-and-weather/
Car rental price almost same among few companies, u can google and compare. I saw one company that is cheaper a lot and check tourist review on the company, seems like a scam and didn't proceed to book.

I wouldn't stay in Reykjavik only, try to explore other places. Where to stay depends where u are going. I'm going around the island, so I will be staying different place every night

September is cheaper and less crowded cause past summer (peak period). September is also beginning of Aurora and weather not too cold yet before the winter. Sure can self drive. U only have to worry about driving during winter due to snow.

They are like one stop center for different tours and car rentals. You can survey the price, then contact the tour/car rental company directly to get cheaper price. Cut out the middleman

It all depends on individual tolerance to cold. Some may need 1 layer and some may need 3 layers of inner wear.
Iceland is always windy!
Layering is the key here. Important to have a windbreaker (with hood) on top of the layers.
Padded gloves / mittens, scarves and warm hats are essential too.

Yeah might be going around the time as well

Any itinerary suggestions? What is the minimum suggested days? Are northern lights difficult to see around the time?

Northern lights normally from September to March depending on your luck. Minimum days 5 if you only go to Golden Circle and South part. 10 days and above if you make one round around the island

No, not necessary.

Unless you have experience in winter driving, recommend you not to. Otherwise, is a bliss to drive in Iceland.

Pingvellier is a good place to catch Aurora, subject to weather naturally.

zres Marine Boy perhaps you could add something constructive. Btw, inferiority complex people consider things they couldn't afford or haven't experience is fake.

For malaysian driving license, most will accept but better u check with rental company to be safe n i guess most of them will happily answer u. Dun understand why some ppl like to create confusion by simply said malaysian lisense not accepted.

Depends what season are you going. If during winter for aurora hunt, I think at least 4 layers 5 is the best. The uniqlo heat tech inner wear is what I do recommend.
Bring a thermos with hot sup while doing aurora hunt. You will truly appreciate that.

This is the website I use while doing aurora hunt. 2 things you need to consider, which is the strength of sun activities and the cloud distribution.

yes if the camera can manually control the aperture,  shutter and iso. With tripod is better.

Depends where u want to go. Sedan sufficient for Ring Road. 4x4 is a must if u intend to venture into highlands and F-roads

Normally Ring Road wont go to F-roads unless u wanna go off road or up the highlands. Plan your route ahead to avoid sesat

Hmm, guess I better stick to 4x4 to be safe. Have higher clearance also. But which 4x4 is ok? Rav4 or Kia Sportage?

I see, can share which company you rented your car?

I've few choices in my list but all of them having mixed reviews laugh.gif
1. Lagoon Car Rental
2. Cars Iceland
3. Blue Car Rental
4. Lotus Car Rental

Both Avis and Hertz prices are much higher compared than the rest.

I forgot which company. U can check from "broker" or tour guide websites that offers many cars and compare against the car company itself. Sometimes the broker website is cheaper than the car company itself. But be cautious of companies that are too cheap cos I saw suspecting positive reviews that could be written by themselves

Neither? Akureyri is a bigger town than Vik. You should choose another new place to stop for a night.

This depends on how you see it. Some people feel that it is boring when some don't. I did the walk/ice cave etc. Personally, it's quite interesting. Some of my friends felt that it's just mehhhhh.

I will be flying to iceland on the 29th September and will have around 11 days there.
Do you want to exchange phone number? So we can share if there's any tips or emergency issue?
This would be my first time in Iceland and driving on right side of the road so im kinda nervous.

One fast food set meal is RM80. Exclude the coke and fries, ala carte burger is about RM50 but big portion. Try to buy groceries and cook yourself a few times

Credit card widely accepted and preferred!

FYI: Cold water from the tap is very clean (spring water) and can be used for drinking - not necessary to boil.
Just run it for a few minutes to clear the sulfur smell.

But DO NOT DRINK the hot water from the tap.
Boil cold water if you want to make hot drink!

If not eating in fancy restaurants then possible. If go during summer can rent mini camper van and save on accommodation. If winter might be more expensive since can't camp.

Can, i have done it in about RM12k... that including London. For Iceland i did around 10 days. If u don't buy souvenir, 10k would be sufficient for u.
Can cover Blue Lagoon somemore.
Cook most meals by ourselves. We made bento box on lunch because we did ring road, so most of the lunch time would be driving on the road with no house no restaurant around... we stop by some place and eat our lunch in the car.

All 4 of us, stayed in good airbnb that has fancy kitchen and also has washer and dryer.
We brought our own mini rice cooker, can cook enough rice for 4 person. Also brought some perencah to fried rice, salt, soy sauce, indomee.
My sister somemore brought bkt herbs to make bkt.
Buy groceries in Bonus, we goto Bonus everyday.
Rented a Kia Sportage, expensive abit but worth every penny.
Did not change any Krona, use credit card all the way.

But then, we were a group of 4. So rental and airbnb all divided by 4.
If you are only travelling in a group of 2, cost would be higher.

10k you need to get very cheap air ticket.
I was there during end of September and manage to see northern light. September still haven't snow is easier to drive, but iceland is driving on left hand side.
6 days should be enough to cover southern part. You can rent mini camper van like what I did last time to save on accommodation. Don't go after October if you plan to travel with camper van. Because it will be too cold and many campsite is closed.

Northern light is visible from the month of September-March but again this is also depends on luck, weather and aurora activities.
It is advice to self-drive in Iceland due you can have the luxury of time to see what you want, stop where you want and do your own activities without concerning time and other people. It is very pleasant to drive in Iceland but please get a 4WD car due you might go off road that is not suitable for normal car. Is the RM10K budget inclusive of flight or exclude?

I was in Iceland last year middle October 2018 for 10 days (2person trip) and it cost us roughly RM 9K per pax (exclude flight ticket) but this is due of us staying at Blue Lagoon hotel which is super expensive. Other than that, most of accommodation is within budget range.

PM you the itinerary. During my trip, i rarely stay in hotel except last day. Most of the trip is accommodation is either from Airbnb, YHA or HI which definitely help to lower the trip cost.

We rented Suzuki Grand Vitara (Model 2016) for 10 days. Roughly about RM2k so per day price is RM200. This is only advisable if you are going off road.

Iceland becoming too tourist filled. If you want something off the beaten path, try the Faroe Islands. Similar scenery but much less tourists and unspoiled wilderness.

It's worse during peak season, which is now. The best time to move around for anyone there during this period, is to sleep during the day and travel during the night since it's always bright.

Going to iceland this March the temperature will be ard 0-5 degree after some research. Is thermal wear/long john necessary if i wear 3 Top layering ( uniqlo heatech, fleece long sleeves, sweater, half down jacket) ?Fleece Pants with jeans .Thanks 🙏
*
U need a very good thermal wear
A good thermal, and fleece inside and a windbreaker should be sufficient
For your pants, a heatech and another layer should be good
What you need to concern is your shoes and gloves, they are equally important
If your hands and feet are cold, you will suffer

Also, if you are renting, get a good car that has heating

Enjoy your trip and be safe!

Ya, must plan a trip there soon to complete the 3 extreme travel destinations.

Having been to Iceland twice, before and after the volcanic eruption, and to Greenland, four years ago

Going to Faroe, Svalbard and Tromso in July!
Hoping to do a short Hurtigruten ferry ride (depending on it's schedule) to Lofoten from Tromso!
Completes my bucket list of 4 extreme lands (Iceland, Greenland, Faroe and Svalbard)

Depends on what you like to do.

For me, I think Iceland is worth to go, but some people say it looks similar to New Zealand.

Check out my northern lights thread too

because i seen agency charge RM13k/pax, without flight tix. So im not sure if travel by ownself would be a lot more cheaper, or more or less the same.

Do the maths yourself to check. Iceland need to book tour even if you go yourself unless you hire car and drive yourself

3rd Iceland Trip: 27 May - 4 Jun 2023

Flight - RM4500
Hotel (7ns) - RM2500
3 Tours from Reykjavik - RM2500
Airport Transfer - RM350
TOTAL: RM9850/per person

https://bustravel.is/iceland-tours

1. Golden Circle & Blue Lagoon Small Group Tour With Admission
2. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & South Iceland
3. Snaefellsnes Peninsula Tour

Personally I prefer not to drive because you miss out a lot on the scenery.
Iceland is always cold and windy. Weather can change very fast!

1st trip: Nov 2009 (Group of 12)
2nd trip: Jun 2011 (Group of 8)

Both were all in private tours with a van and driver guide. The experience was much better.
Iceland was not so much a hot destination then.

I had snow, sleet, clouds, wind, rain, sunshine in the same hour in Iceland!

The wind at Snæfellsnes was crazy and was difficult to even walk properly

Glacier hiking was interesting as well, but exhausting. Overall Iceland is a place worth visiting multiple times

no. iceland is pretty big geographically and takes time to travel around as a lot of places of interest is not in the city

also it increases your chances to catch the northern lights as well

driving license is accepted. iceland drives on the right side of the road

i didn't use airbnb in iceland. i usually take local tour so save me the hassle of planning further on routes, where to stop for lunch, where to pump fuel etc, icy roads

always find it useful to go with a local guide

i find most attraction in iceland is not nearby in the town area so either need to drive yourself or take a local tour

Just sharing my experience for Iceland, travelled in March 2023, which was supposed to be the end of winter but was met with heavy snowfall (no snow 2 weeks before the trip but it suddenly just snowed for 10 days straight according to a local).

12 nights trip in Iceland (Ring Road + Golden Circle) including 2 short day trips on my layover at Helsinki, Finland.

KL - SINGAPORE - HELSINKI - REYKJAVIK - VIK - SKAFTAFELL/Öræfi - Egilsstadir - Mývatn - Akureyri - Snæfellsnes Peninsula - Golden Circle - Grindavik (think this place is closed now)

Spend a total of 25k all in including flights, food, tax, petrol etc. for 2 persons, about 12,500 per pax.

Weather in Iceland is unpredictable, good to download some apps like Faerd & Vedur and Safetravel, which gives updates on things like road openings/closing. Driving in the winter in Iceland is relatively safe compared to other winter countries as traffic isn't heavy and as long you take it slow you are fine (The locals and Europeans drive really quickly though just let them pass). However if the snow is too thick don't drive through it, would be good if you can get hold of a shovel and a brush sort of snow scraper to clear your windshield in the morning.

Food is not cheap in Iceland, recommended to eat less vegetables and fruits as they are imported. Instead just eat lamb and meats. Best place to shop imo is Bonus.

Make sure you have a credit card, as its virtually the only form of payment, many places dont take cash.

Another dodgy aspect is parking, these icelandic really invested in a good camera system which records the cars entering and exiting the parking lot of an attraction and you are expected to make payment at a machine, even if you did not stop, they consider you as already entered the place and will send you a bill.

Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel near Akureyri is the only tolled road in Iceland, just remember to make payment online after using it.

But local guide will cost more than self drive or even the local travel agent
