Hi guys, saw this thread hope I am able to help.
There is no guarantee at all if you could see the northern light or not during the winter.
I was lucky to be there 2 years back because that was the peak of Northern Light (2013-2014). So how did I see those beautiful lights? Its all luck. Why I said so? My friend stayed there for 12 nights couldnt see any and I was there for just 5 nights. Its all about weather + luck. Remember during the winter there will be loads of cloud. Winter in Iceland can sometimes get harsh a little with snowstorms and all just be well prepared!
To increase your chance of seeing it, please travel to places without any light interference. Especially outside of city Reykjavik. Of course I rented a car which what I normally do. It is worth to rent a car there if you wish to see the real Iceland.
If you really got no luck, is okay, Iceland have more than just northern lights. Amazing views especially when you are driving around. Go to the waterfalls, lagoons, glaciers, drive past mountains, black sands and many more.
Last but not least, if you live in the city of Reykjavik, MUST TRY Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur sausages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Walking distance if you live in the center!
Alright I hope it helps.
