Just create another partition will do, and install Ubuntu into that new partition..then you are ready to dual-boot Ubuntu/Win

..no need much space,8GB can also...
full functioning ubuntu takes only 3,2gb, and since it can read and write windows partition, u can share the files on windows...so just a small part need to be taken from ur ori vista hdd
