Hey Rayne,

Thx for the advise. Will surely try the pingpong ball method and see how it works (Btw, my MS is Poppy wink.gif Sherry is furrybutts cute MS)

As for Poppy, she doesn't mind if I sit next to her and I've been petting her eversince she's home with me , while eating. She gets overly excited when eating and often chokes. Thats why i resorted to hand feeding her bit by bit. But she's been a good girl recently cause I've trained her to only eat when I say its ok to eat. I'll leave her bowl and ask her to stay and only on insturctions, she's allowed to eat. However, she still gobbles up her food.

Haha, yes...I keep mixing up names coz I'm quite bad with names. Sorry about that tongue.gif

Maybe she gets too excited because we ourselves make them feel excited about food? I've heard about this from Cesar Milan and I find that it's often true with Scottie & Kenji...previously before I feed them, I would 'ask' them in an excited voice if they want their food, and they jump up and down and became SOOOO excited that when they eat, they ate so quickly it's scary. These days I try not to do that, but just calmly bring the food out to the kitchen (that's where I feed them) and they know already. THey are still excited but not as crazy as before...and yeah, I do the Stay command too before they eat. smile.gif I feed them raw, so because the food is difficult to eat like that, they are forced to eat a bit slower and have to chew first before they swallow. Chewing stimulates the mind as well as helping to work the jaws and teeth smile.gif If you give your pup enough of a workout at meal times, she will be tired and it is a good exercise (in a way) for her to spend her energy smile.gif

No problem at all. There are so many new MS now in this forum (all about poppy's age wink.gif ). I dun even remember human names, let alone furkid's names.

Now I know what I did wrong. I've always said in a very excited way to tell Poppy her dinner is ready. I should stay calm and keep quiet when feeding her. Thx for the tips!

I'll be at DPC this Saturday evening. Everyone who is free, pls drop by. Poppy girl is very deprieved of doggy friends and needs to socialise more. Plus, its so fun watching them chasing and sniffing each other.

Cheers!

Sherry is like a vacuum cleaner when it comes to food.. everything gets sucked up within seconds. I got her an anti-gulp bowl, it has 4 protrusions at the side of the bowl and 1 protrusion in the middle of the bowl, which makes it harder for her to get her food (ping pong ball & other obstacles would work the same way too). it helped to slow down her eating speed smile.gif

Rayne, do you give bones to Scottie, since you feed the raw diet? I've read that bones with some meat on them are great for keeping teeth clean. But as I live in an apartment, if i give bones to Sherry, she'll have to eat them indoors. Will it be messy? If it'll leave stains all over the floor/rug then it'll be a bit difficult for me to give her bones..

mtee7, i might swing by DPC tomorrow. Catch you and Poppy there, if i make it! Sherry misses all her doggy friends biggrin.gif

Yes, bones are part of the raw diet smile.gif Sources of bone (enveloped in meat of course) for Scottie are chicken, turkey, pork & lamb ribs, duck, squirrel, quail and fish smile.gif If you're worried about the mess, you can always use a piece of cloth or towel and make sure your pup eats on top of the towel/cloth. If she tries to bring the food away, bring the food back to the towel and soon she will learn that she has to eat the food on the towel/cloth. smile.gif Once finished, just dump the towel into the washing machine smile.gif You can always clean her paws and beard with a wet tissue if you think she's been messy...I used to do that for Scottie, but since I find he doesn't use his paws when eating and his beard is only wet with no stains on the beard, I don't really clean his beard that much...laugh.gif

hmm.. i might just try giving her bones one of these days..

sherry is very manja, when she plays with toys or gets a treat, she will come looking for someone's lap to sit on and play with her toy or enjoy her treat. i'm sure she'll do that with the bone, but i like your idea of laying out a towel for her to eat a bone on. thanks!

do you offer the bone completely raw? or boil it just a little bit?

Pepper used to be that way too when we just brought her home..but only after 2 days i realized that i really can't be feeding her 1 by 1 kibbles..so i just leave d bowl there till she starts eating when she's hungry

eventhough now she's 10months old, i still didn't change the feeding time. it's 3 times a day, i use auto feeder so the timing is still ok when i'm off to work.

like what Rayne said if you scared they eat too fast, there's this type of bowl named "Eat Better Bowl", they have 3D bone shape in the middle of the bowl, so your pup will need to slowly pickup a kibbles during meal. if you wanna know where has it, uptown pet centre has it. u can call them and check with them whether or not they still have stock smile.gif

NEVER offer cooked bones to dogs...they become very brittle and are mostly the cause for punctures in internal organs. When we feed bone, we feed raw bones and always make sure that the bones are covered in meat. I don't give bare bones to Scottie, although some other raw feeders do. If you want to feed bone, please don't give those big marrow bones from cows or big ungulates, ie weight-bearing bones like leg bones. Those are actually too dense to feed our dogs and are teeth breakers. Feed smaller bones like from poultry or soft ribs. Hope that helps. smile.gif

According to my vet, a lot of dogs are sensitive to red meat. Some are even sensitive to chicken. Are fish meat-based kibbles available in KK? perhaps could try that, if it's available.

as for which brand to go for, since there's limited option in kk, you could identify the available brands and find out which of those brands have the best review on the Dog Food Analysis website smile.gif
