i'm new to BD just bought a 2disc Watchmen and tested on ps3,

izit normal that the movie is not full screen? there are black bars on top n btm...
This is normal and it's called "letterboxing". It happens because the movie aspect ratio is wider than your screen.

It's not about the size of the TV. It's about the aspect ratio - do some reading about this to understand the issue.

Most LCD/plasma TVs are 16:9 or 1.78:1 aspect ratio, so it doesn't matter what size you buy you will still get letterboxing because the movie is wider than 16:9. The only solution is to get a wider TV like the new Philips one.

It's not that trends keep changing, it's more like there is no standard that everyone uses - so aspect ratios are all over the place. Many concerts and TV serials are 16:9, movies can be 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 or 2.40:1, etc. Without any standard, there is no hope that one TV will fit everything perfectly.

Most likely you will get "pillarboxing" - vertical black bars on the left and right.

First we'll complain there's huge black bars on our 4:3 tv, now also complain got thin black bars on 16:9 tv. When there's a wider like 21:9 later, we'll complain there's huge vertical black bars pulak... doh.gif At the end of the day, people will never get satisfied with what they have; me included... that's human nature. rclxub.gif

How to get over all these? Easy, save for a projector biggrin.gif

the "problem" is that the IMAX version's volume is 4dB lower compared to the normal version. That is all

Phew, I've never posted anything in all-caps red before. sweat.gif

I was so shocked by the AQ, I didn't really focus for the PQ. I'll give my take when I receive the Walmart IMAX version and do some comparison.

Finished the whole movie with Aiman this morning. This the new reference disc, EARGASM.

PQ 5-star as well. Better than the first one but still retains the look and style. Vivid colors, inky black, stable shadows, and great depth. Healthy grain naturally balance the clarity making it film-like. Can't wait for the IMAX version.

The movie itself: Oscar material. Just kidding. tongue.gif

Uh, having a projector by itself won't cure this problem. There is still the problem with the screen. As synn mentioned the critical item to get is a masking system (these aren't cheap) and possibly an anamorphic lens.
