Later on the guy says that if you turn up the volume by 4dB for the IMAX version then it sounds the same:

OK I just watched and rewatched and rewatched again and again the OPENING 2mins up to where the giant decipticon comes alive and produces some massive bass by pounding his fists into the ground.

I watched the IMAX version 4db louder than the other version which puts them on EQUAL loudness playing fields.

I HONESTLY cannot tell a difference in the quality of the sound between the two when they are equally matched. IF you watch them at the same volume of course the non-imax version will sound more powerful, but when equaled out they sound exactly alike, and my spl meter reads EXACTLY the same readings on both movies.

Where he pounds the ground and flips over the tubing I hit 116db on BOTH movies at that point. When the IMAX was played 4db louder.

I think the moral of my experiment is simple...if you want the Extra punch of the IMAX visuals then simply just turn up the volume 4db MORE and you will have the exact same audio experience as the other version.

This is normal and it's called "letterboxing". It happens because the movie aspect ratio is wider than your screen.

It's not about the size of the TV. It's about the aspect ratio - do some reading about this to understand the issue.

Most LCD/plasma TVs are 16:9 or 1.78:1 aspect ratio, so it doesn't matter what size you buy you will still get letterboxing because the movie is wider than 16:9. The only solution is to get a wider TV like the new Philips one.

It's not that trends keep changing, it's more like there is no standard that everyone uses - so aspect ratios are all over the place. Many concerts and TV serials are 16:9, movies can be 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 or 2.40:1, etc. Without any standard, there is no hope that one TV will fit everything perfectly.



Most likely you will get "pillarboxing" - vertical black bars on the left and right.

Uh, having a projector by itself won't cure this problem. There is still the problem with the screen. As synn mentioned the critical item to get is a masking system (these aren't cheap) and possibly an anamorphic lens.

I first heard this title mentioned in the JTR Captivator review over at AVS. It was one of the discs that fugueness (owner of 4x Submersive and soon another 2x Terraform XL ) brought over to demo. It's a Korean film.

Hmm... I went back to re-read the JTR Captivator thread @ AVS but don't see any mention of the film anymore What attracted me first was someone said the gunshots were better than on Open Range (which is one of the key movies to demo gun shots). Then I asked fugueness and he said: "The gunshots in TGTBTW are not as over-mic'd as Open Range, but there is an extended scene involving horses, motorcycles, guns, artillery that is currently my favorite demo. It was the favorite at Rob's meet as well." Rob is the owner of the Captivators.
