I personally know less than 5. This is excluding seniors not in my batch, whom are most probably JPA scholars (July 2010 intake, mine was Jan/March 2011 intake). All the MUFY students I know are self-sponsored.

Limeuu was right on the 'bottom of the barrel' statement. Met someone with borderline MUFY score, borderline IELTS, borderline interview and less than 20% ISAT sweat.gif
*
Let's hope said student realize a chance has been given, and get act together.

As far as Monash Sunway is concerned though, should scraping of barrel continue, th school may eventually be renamed Sunway University's Jeffery Cheah School of Medicine. The disparity of standards between the Sunway and Clayton campus, must be within acceptable limits. This would be the reasonable expectation.

Last year's intake has about 30 to 40  students from MUFY and quite a number are JPA sponsored.

Where does the majority come from? STPM should be just a handful; A levels, SAM, Ausmat etc? I know a few who are from A levels and did not manage to secure places in UK.

It is not so much of a drop in standards, the syallbus is the same and they sit for the same exams and markings are moderated. (Its the same for law and accountancy exams; for those Malaysian students who sit for the same exams as their UK counterparts, there should not be much difference and you would actually see Malaysian students among the price winners on a regular basis! We treat exams more seriously than most others.) Its the unfortunate thing for these borderline cases who will have problems even getting past Year 1!
*
I think Limeuu's latest comment sums it up.

For the borderline cases who made it, let's hope they pull up their socks in the first year, (course requires loads of memory work) as I read that even the "bright" students have been known to falter.

Apparently for most of the Singaporeans in Clayton, Monash was their second or third choice after NUS and Oxbridge. There would have been a handful more Singaporeans, had NUS not offered them a place. There's about 40 of them, not 30 as initlally thought.

Does anyone know if Monash Clayton takes up a share in Monash Sunway, and shares in the profits, OR does it work like a "franchise", where a certain fixed percentage is determined on revenue figures?

The "You help me, I help you" thing does not work anymore! No wonder med scholarship for overseas after pre-u are not available(yet, hopefully).

Looks like we need to own or control one of these universities; like Ohio University in the States. cry.gif  cry.gif

And UK gomen has indicated that A levels grade will be tighten up to improve the quality of the students. Oz is already so competitive and UK numbers are so few. Parents really need to review the situation.
*
Review the situation? Does it not mean that with all the "tightening up", only the best (in terms of OVERALL criteria) will be considered for the course in these two countries? The reality is, a basic MBBS is just a degree, that's basically it! biggrin.gif

With the sheer numbers of med schools and students being churned out in the country, it's fast becoming "everyone can get mbbs!". Following the mbbs, they need to be trained/interned, and this is the worry, if you ask me. Huge numbers of mbbs grads unfortunately means that employers (private sector) and our neighbour will now HAVE to become very selective. Where one gets employed/trained, and registered, will determine one's potential to (hopefully) specialise in their area of interest/skill.

Side note, is the Labour Party in Australia friendlier to international students, or the opposition led by Tony Abbott? Watching news on australia network now, breaking news - Kevin Rudd's resignation as Foreign Minister

Google says, Tony Abbott big on DECREASING immigration numbers!

Better go UK, rather than carrying that stigma "NUS rejects". I hope not all sg ppl in UK are the same!
*
If you read brigthsparks forum, you will fast conclude that NUS remains their first preference, unless it's Oxbridge. So yeap, save for Oxbridge, the rest are also NUS rejects. Kiasu nation looks at rankings, and when demand numbers become smaller, they will kiasu-select.

19 international students as one withdrawn last minute. tongue.gif  A number of the Sin students have unconditional offer from UK med schools but decided to go to Aus. As they needed to go to NS after preu they have plenty of time to decide.
*
Yes, I noticed the NS boys will normally apply for a deferral, and some unis do not allow that. So how many malaysians among the 19? I think it's a good sized cohort, just about 119/120 total, including the domestics right?

So just 4 to 5 % intl students then. LOL! Makes perfect sense to train their own right?

Looks like even with monies, getting into one of the better overseas universities for med is getting tougher and tougher. Where to other than oz, uk, sg?

This may not be a popular opinion, but I do think that's how it should be. We need some credibility, in this "everyone can mbbs" times.

To all aspiring and current medical students, watch this series about a group of newly graduated doctors doing their foundation Programme in the UK. It's a factual documentary, nothing like ER/Grey's/house.

Medicine in RCSI anyone?

"...our experience has shown that students who obtain two A and two B grades in their exams are considered eligible for a place in RCSI, subject to a motivational interview. DIFC will assist you in preparing for this interview...."

For UK studies, any advice to purchase books here or there assuming list of rec books available.
*
Each university will have their own recommended textbooks. You can check out the titles, then perhaps check prices on amazon.co.uk or bookdepository.co.uk and locally, Kamal (is this right). There are also very cool apps on iPad, apparently,

Wow, just wow!

So LUC will send or hire academic staff in the three respective offshore unis? Why do I doubt this? It seems LUC is like a shelf college to me.

From "monkeygirl" in IMU thread. Re-posted here as useful info.

"feeling bored writing my report so i'm back here looking at lowyat forums.
lol.... anyway, i'm studying in leeds now after transferring thru the imu-pms route in 2010. 4th yr now.

regarding ur qw if med graduates from russell grp makes a difference for f1&2... NO
they recently revamped the f1/2 applications and it's now point based (lol.. like everything in the UK. visa application is also point based)
so you get points for having published research, presenting in conferences, etc (points are hard to come by ;( )
not too sure about the details but i think they do look at your academic standing in uni as well and award points based on where you are in your batch.
the whole application form is like an essay paper as well. they ask you things like: describe a situation where you've shown leadership skills in 500 words or something. and they give u points based on ur answers.

then starting from my batch, we all have to sit for a situational-judgement exam thing where we get points based on our scores. i heard it's an mcq paper where they give you a situation [eg: u overheard ur colleague insulting the patient with another colleague. do you: 1) report him to GMC (medical council in UK) 2) talk to him 3) report him to your consultant 4) ignore ]

so yea... ur points will then indicate how likely you'll get a competitive deanery/program (eg: london) "

Added on March 15, 2012, 1:27 pmQuick question for med students - how "stressful" is first semester (first year) really? Or is it dependent on the course structure (there are variations among med schools), and also to a lesser extent the individual?

Hi! Thanks a lot for your reply.

Yeah, am concentrating for my A-Levels now. That's what I was thinking of, getting scholarship to do medicine overseas, but since there are not many scholarships that offer medicine, I'm doing some research on local institutes to prepare myself. My parents advised me to do my degree locally and then specialise overseas. What is the number of students studying in the same year as you now between? =)
*
How do you plan to specialise overseas? You will need to ensure that your medical degree is recognized first in the overseas country.

Added on March 23, 2012, 8:46 pmI really think this thread should be pinned, with a guide by seniors like limeuu, so that aspiring medical students (and their parents) understand the course and the profession better.

No, not a medical student, but I have a "vested" interest.
