Also requested unconditional confirmation in writing which they did and sent by courier.
Accomodation request was also settled pretty fast.
Quite happy with the way they responded.
*
Was some fees payment required to accept the unconditional offer? I take it relative has already completed A levels?

I guess we are so used to Malaysian style inefficiencies that when things happen the way they are supposed to happen, we feel "quite happy". tongue.gif

Looks like Curtin Medical School will get the go ahead after all - now let's see if they bring the medical course to Sarawak a la Monash smile.gif

https://sphere.curtin.edu.au/teaching/med-n..._med_school.cfm

Oh I should also mention that the University of South Australia and Charles Sturt University are lobbying pretty hard for their slice in the medical education business - odds on Australia having 3 more medical schools by the end of this decade.

One would have thought there's no such thing as "medical graduates tsunami", from reading that article alone..maybe in the process of being "solved". smile.gif

What could have possibly gone wrong with the application? While BMAT was not mentioned, applicant's UKCAT score was high, with straight A*s for GCSEs.

And if one fails the first time, this is a good read.

In this case it's very probable the PS did not make the cut as she had high UKCAT scores. No mentions of interviews as well.

Er... Please note that for NSW Internship 2012, AMC graduates were not considered for internships.
And please look at SAIMET (south australia), they are also distinguishing between Sunway and Clayton Campus.
Also Western Australia, they are seperating NZ and Aus international grads, too, things are changing to the worse.
*
I think this is only expected and will probably be the policy adopted across all the states. It only makes sense to give priority to those who clinically trained in Australia. So 2013 is not looking great for internationals wanting internship places.

"AMSA president James Churchill said reports released last week by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria and the NSW Health Education and Training Institute had allowed AMSA to calculate there would be a shortfall of 146 internships in NSW and 169 in Victoria."

Looks like NSW and Victoria are the first states to bite the dust - international students graduating this year to be the first "casualties" of the medical student tsunami.
*
Doesn't look like AMSA has managed to push anything through this year. It will be interesting to know where the 315 will be eventually placed.

Considering most international students in Qld, Vic and NSW are from North America, I'd assume they have a back-up plan in the form of the USMLE - as for Malaysians and Singaporeans, the MOHH is doing a recruitment drive in July: http://www.physician.mohh.com.sg/aus_recruitment.html
*
rclxms.gif Until Singapore meet it's target, at least malaysians have a back up plan. I think the majority of malaysian med grads in australia will not be looking to come back to malaysia for housemanship, since there will be a supply excess very soon.

Is it not their policy to ensure that existing undergraduates are "guaranteed" internships upon graduation and any change in policy should be highlighted before the next batch of first year students begins?

What happens in the past will presume to happen in the future unless notified accordingly.

In this respect, I think bolehland is better, internship is guaranteed though not in the way it use to be.
*
In Australia, the domestics are guaranteed of internships. The concerns here are those pertaining to international students only, who are placed in the lowest priority for placements.

It's seldom a good idea to compare bolehland with others. wink.gif

Bolehland is just too "unique".

Among the internationals, is there a percentage breakdown of the different nationalities? I think Singaporeans will be least affected as most do not mind going back after graduation. Not sure about the Canucks' stand.

This is the only information I can dig up - note it's from 2008, so I'm assuming Malaysian numbers have dropped significantly since then (establishment of Monash Sunway, change in course structure from undergraduate to postgraduate and the cessation of JPA sponsorship to Australia). On the other hand, Canadian and American numbers have swelled mainly due to the aforementioned change in program structure and aggressive expansion in international places at UQ, USyd and UniMelb.

Main source countries for international medical students enrolled in Australian undergraduate and graduate entry courses, December 2008*

Source country Numbers enrolled:
Malaysia 1075
Singapore 511
Canada 360
Indonesia 138
United States 79
Botswana 77
Brunei Darussalam 67
Hong Kong SAR 50
Republic of South Korea 42
Norway 27
China 21
Taiwan 19
Japan 15
Sri Lanka 15
India 13
All other 156
Total 2665

*Unpublished analysis by A Langley of Australian international student enrolment data from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Canberra, February 2010.
*
Wow! But I agree that numbers have dropped. There's only around 10 malaysians in Monash Clayton, among the 60+ internationals. Am sure numbers have dropped in other oz med schools as well. And with more awareness of the internship shortage and high fees, numbers may drop significantly. Plus, there are so many med schools in Malaysia now. wink.gif

You know what I'd really to know - how many of these Malaysians are/were government scholars and how many actually returned to Malaysia? JPA and MARA could have easily thrown away tens, if not hundreds of millions of ringgit for those non-returning scholars - would this not be a gross misappropriation of funds on the scale of the NFC?
*
Are you on FaMa? I think for those under JPA, there is an obligatory amount that needs to be paid. I suppose if that is paid, then that's all there is to it. I'd rather not go into "misappropriation of funds" - that's another whole big topic.

The only other country on the list of source nations to actually sponsor students to study medicine in Australia is Botswana (and certainly not on the scale that Malaysia did in the past)- and even if the amount is reimbursed in full by the scholar, Malaysia would still have lost the "talent" to Australia - it's a good thing they've finally come to their senses, they've been subsidising Australian medical education for far too long smile.gif
*
So will you be returning to good ole malaysia then? wink.gif

i think we have to realise, by studying there, we are only buying an education.....and they have NEVER promised the right to internship after, nor right to work......

therefore, what is happening is NOT that they failed to keep their promise, since they promised nothing except an education....it's just that in the past, they have accepted foreigners to stay on and work.....and this may slowly be a closing door.....and we assume the open door comes with the education and get upset when it closes........
*
I am with you on this. One can ONLY HOPE that an opportunity to work (and therefore get registered) presents itself upon graduation.

Yes, it was not promised but the assumption is there. If internationals do not get internships, the numbers will be reduced quite a lot.

If only they had a 5 yr working forecast, before students move to the starting point, a lot of unnecessary worries could hv been avoided.

Just imagine if Ptptn said close shop end of this year!
*
Do note that the said assumption was not made by the respective authorities/countries. As far as medical grads are concerned, the number of internship places were not filled by the home students, and therefore internationals were given the opportunity to intern. It was never a given. If one looks at the oz scenario, there are enough places for the domestics, and I will hazArd a guess that should there be any increase in spots, it will cater to the future domestic shortfall, if any. There was a survey by AMSA asking if international students will be agreeable to be bonded if they are given internships. Whether or not the results of the survey will be used for future proposals, only time will tell.
