since um and ukm were recognised by smc in 2008, there has been an exodus of their graduates making a beeline to spore for housemanship, to the extend the dean on the ukm med school had to publicly go to the press to highlight the problem....
*
Thanks. So fresh graduates can apply, as long as they are from SMC-recognised unis? What are the chances of specialty training? It will make sense for places to be given to Singaporeans first, right?

I would have thought most offers would be out by second week of January.

Not sure of the status, but some of my seniors got their internship placement in the same state, only a little more rural. So I reckon there will be places, just not the big city ones, unless you're really really good. =) On the bright side, there's always Sg and Nz. =P
*
Doc shortage in NZ too?

Ps. Will let you know about UTAS. wink.gif

relative got a credible 98.5, but not quite your son's 99.15...... smile.gif

and still does not know what course to do.... blink.gif

actually feels worse now, that will have to make decisions!!.....was hoping the results will make decision!
*
98.5 is very credible. Apparently aus pre-u courses like SACE/VCE/WACE are not very hard courses, BUT because of the ranking system, the student needs to consistently do very well throughout the year to make it to the top 2% (for international students) to be considered for critical courses, all other conditions remaining equal. As far as VCE is concerned, many international students (who went for year12 after SPM) are not really aware of how the ranking really works, and the importance of study scores, potential scaling etc. One needs to look at the performance of the students in top schools to gauge themselves, not just among their school cohort. Your relative is lucky you know the respective educational systems well. Some students are now a bit shaken up with lower than expected results. A few will not be going back to Aus, and have applied to IMU and Monash Sunway. EducAtion agents should be better equipped with such information, and not give false hopes to students and parents. There's lots of information available online, just time consuming to read and understand.

What is relative's second preference, if he/she decides against medicine? With 98.5, many courses for the taking!! Congrats to him/her.

Safest option for international students (intending to start med 2012 and beyond) would be South Australia (U of Adelaide or Flinders) - they're the only state with a surplus of intern positions.

Every international student from WA who applied for an internship was successfully placed for 2012 - apparently most of the local students wanted to head East.

NSW and Queensland are probably the worst hit by the tsunami, Victoria will have to absorb some of the local graduates from Tasmania.
*
Why will SA not absorb local grads from Tasmania?

pretty sure there will be some heading there as well. There's no rules saying grads from which uni cant go to which state.... only that the unis of each state has allocated priorities to their own graduates - Except for UTAS (for what I've heard that is). Leftovers are for the strong. I've heard from my seniors that SA is rather easy to apply for an internship job. I dunno, I'll just finish up the remaining years first then decide what to do. Hopefully they will open up more intern spots for each state and I'll get a spot somewhere =)
*
Hope so too! Quite ridiculous to spend all that money, and not get an internship placement!

I think the North American international students (esp. Canadian) might find the situation even more distressing as they are not even guaranteed a training position in their home country. They'll have to study and sit for the USMLE (on top of the Australian syllabus) on their own.

And to make things worse - some of them could have taken a loan (and a massive one too!) in order to study here - definitely not a comfortable situation to be in...
*
Noticed there are lots of Canucks applying to JCU, for some reason.

He's waiting for Monash, definitely. First round offers 10 Jan. Did your relative apply to Adelaide? Son only applied to Monash and UTAS.

you can apply anywhere for housemanship place, but the usual order is local citizen/pr intrastate, then interstate, then nz citizens, then only intrastate international students, then finally international students interstate.....

i think this is a transient blip, due to the states not planning fast enough to catch up with the increased output from a spat of new med schools within the last 10 years.....it will eventually catch up....

of course, it is wise to remember what happened in the late 80's and 90's.....when there was a 'surplus' of doctors and international students were barred from house jobs in oz......
*
Just had lunch with a friend who is back from Sydney for the holidays. He was surprised about the lack of internship placements, as australia is still facing doctor shortage. He added that the medical system is being centralised, and will no longer be "state-controlled".
