but the website says the display is:

"15.6 Widescreen HD WLED Glossy Display with TrueLife™ (1366x768)"

however, it also says it has a HDMI port, so can i hook it up to a fullHD monitor and get 1920x1080 display for movies?

one more thing, should i go for the i3 380M or i5 480M processor?

pardon the noobness smile.gif

oh, and it comes with windows 7 home premium 64-bit........is windows 7 ultimate 32 bit better?
*
go for i5 of course. i3 processor is consider quite slow without turboboost technology

1555 owner reporting in. this is my 1st laptop and it's 1 year 7 months old and still counting.

everything fine with it except that the GPU and CPU gets really hot after long hour gaming but it's winter now so nvm. and since few months back there's this problem here. occasionally my wireless connection will malfunction. the icon on the right bottom corner still shows im connected but i totally cant surf the net and when i try to reconnect. the whole windows explorer will be not responding. and everything just wont work. i cant even restart my laptop with the normal way. everytime this happen i have to force shutdown my computer.

Is any1 here facing the same problem?
*
for the heating issue, im user of s1555 for 2 years and im facing that issue also last few months.
even using coolermaster notepal but my system will auto shutdown just playing fifa11.
then i google and update the latest bios version then the problem is solved

Hi. I need some help. my dvd drive is not working =[
its the type where u just pop the disc in instead of pushing the disc tray out.

i have the studio 1555 laptop for a around 2 years or more. i havent used the cd/dvd RW drive very often but lately when i try to insert the cd to it it wont play. it sounds like its trying to play it but then it just stops. it happened last time but it worked again.

i tried to to click the dvd drive icon but it just ejects my cd.
I checked device manager but it says its working properly( which is complete bullcrap)

i have no idea what to do now im and i wan to reinstall the dell dock cos it went missing for quite sometime i just didnt have time to reinstall it. but the dell dock doesnt matter.

do i need to get a external disk drive? because its really my last option. short of money. haha

please help me.
thanks alot and appreciate it.

To anyone who don't know.

Anyone with 1557/1558 & want to replace the thermal compound yourself, make sure:-
  • Follow the service manual when disassembling your notebook. The hinge is fragile. Each of the hinge has two screws; one in the casing (you'll see it after you removed the Center Control Cover) & one underneath your laptop. Remember, when you removed one of the two screws, do not operate the lid, whether open or close. If you do, it can break the plastic which hold the screw.
  • Copper shims; (CORRECTION 10 SEPT. 2011) 0.9x20x20mm for the GPU & 0.7x35x10mm for the video ram (1 piece each; 0.7mm & 0.9mm are the thickness). Why? Because the GPU is using thermal pad. It's useless after short period of time. Replaced it with copper shim. Copper shims can drop the temperatures from 5C to 20C (tested & proved). If you unable to get copper shims, you can use aluminum instead. If you have old desktop CPU heatsink (the silverish white color means it's aluminum), you can use the fins. Cut the fins & use sand paper to make it thinner (if too thick). For the video ram, re-use the thermal pad. Should be in this order; heatsink > copper shim > thermal pad > video ram. Take your time when refitting the heatsink to the CPU & GPU. You don't want to break those two.
  • Thermal compound. I recommend either IC Diamond 7 or Arctic MX-4. I prefer MX-4 since it's non-curing (at least that was stated in the specification & reviews) & easy to apply. Non-curing means you don't need to go through "thermal cycles" before you can get optimum result. With IC Diamond 7, the curing time is 2 hours. (UPDATE 10 SEPT. 2011) Arctic MX-4 not perform as it should be on Dell Studio 1557. Right now I ordered Shin-Etsu G751 thermal paste to try next.
  • Isopropyl alcohol(99% or high purity). Arctic clean solution would work too with Q-Tips to clean up the previous compound. Don't use paper towels as there are too many fibers and it catches and tears. Use a lint free cloth if you have one or an old T-shirt or even paper coffee filters if you don't.
Good luck!
