Q : my question is I would like to know if everyone's subwoofer is working?

If you have problems with your subwoofer (either no sound at all or it kicks in sometimes), please post your result here or any information that you know which could help me out  smile.gif

The subwoofer on my 1558 has absolutely no sound as well.

I updated to the latest drivers too but still no difference in terms of sound quality.

BTW, does anyone know how SRS Premium Sound is reflected in the Dell Studios ?

Having read the description at their website, I'm beginning to doubt if this was a marketing ploy by Dell as the sound quality on my studio is just marginally better than on my older Compaq :

http://www.srslabs.com/premiumsound/sound.html

Also, having read the Studio manual, the laptop is supposed to come bundled with 4 speakers and 1 woofer. Has anyone managed to successfully test all speakers ?

When I tried the Speaker Setup, the only audio that came out was from my L and R speakers.

Anyone having the same problem ? hmm.gif

Found the fix to my problem ! icon_rolleyes.gif

Initially I called Dell support to inform them about this problem, but the support person said that I had to manually install the Soundblaster drivers as 'occasionally' it could have been left out from installation from the factory. I told her that mine was already installed, but she said I should re-run the installation CD again.

Doubting her, I fiddled around abit and found SRS audio had to be manually enabled (its disabled by default). Once turning it on and killing off all the mids/treble, I could hear the puny subwoofer warbling underneath. I had high hopes for this to be great sounding seeing how they marketed it with SRS premier sound, subwoofer, surround sound etc, but boy am I disappointed. cry.gif

Anyway, issue resolved, and now I probably have to think about getting myself a separate set of speakers now ... sigh ..

Any experience in formatting laptop? Please make sure you have the windows disc and driver disc with you before you start formatting.

Basically formatting laptop is quite simple. Insert the windows disc and reboot your laptop. When the bios is loading, press F12 or F8 to enter boot option. From there, press boot from DVD rom and basically it is straight forward from there. After that you will come to the option of choosing which partition that you wish to install the windows. Normally the first partition is the partition to install the windows. You must format the partition before you install the windows there. After this the process is just straight forward.

Once the windows is installed, insert the driver disc and start installing the required driver. There is few unnecessary software in the driver disc so you don't need to install it all. Just install important driver such as display, mmc slot reader and etc.

Basically this is the simple, very very simple guide. I don't know you will lost or not. Make sure you know someone who can help you when you lost during formatting. Try at your own risk and back up all your files before formatting.

Oo... discussed subwoofer?? I personally feels that my s1555 speaker rocks. U can't compare them with any other laptop with just 2.0 sound. I can feel the bass very truly. Whenever i play a song, and place my palm on the keyboard, the vibration is very true. Compared to acer 4937G(old model, with dolby home theater?? somethig like that) and compaq cq-40(with 'altec lansing')... s1555 easily kick them off!!! And...

@whiteangel
actually before this, there's bass boost and low frequency protection for my 1555... u can get to it through start-->type sound-->then u can get into those settings. in enhancement page under speakers' properties, there's bass boost and low frequency protection where windows will not play sound lower than certain frequency.
THIS IS BEFORE I REINSTALL IDT audio driver...
After i install, bass boost and low level frequency protection option can only be seen in headphone properties page. Maybe that is the problem. Personally, i think s1555 speaker is nice, compared to other laptops. and compared to some small 2.0 speakers too... for a laptop, i think that the SQ is just nice. don't expect too much from it. haha

I'm have a 1555 model and attention for all 1555 owners (1557 and 1558 owners too)
since it is stated at the manual that there is a subwoofer and if I'm not mistaken the subwoofer is at the right hand side of your touchpad

terrence0488,
since you have open the keyboard section and I'm assuming you are a 1555 owner, did you saw any subwoofer at there and confirm it?
No...cant c the subwoofer!!^^
Bcos the subwoofer is actually located at the bottom of the laptop( near to ram ther ).
when u playing song with full blast, u can actually feel some "wind" pumping out from ther.
the keyboard ther only got 2 small stereo speaker!

As I have too many stuff that needs usb ports.

Razer mouse
Edifier woofers+speakers
HP Printer
Maxtor external drive

sometimes wanna put 1 or 2 pendrives... then cooling fan... ahh! too much, too much! yawn.gif

Just cancel your order and proceed with Vostro. It won't cost you anything to cancel the order but expect the shipping of Vostro to be later .

If the Vostro you interested is running on nVidia8600Gt, I would suggest you to stick with Studio 15.

@Grimm: that cooler is cun cun for 15' laptop. Lucky that you get the 4 port instead of 3 port usb since you got so many things to run with usb.

well vostro has better graphic card... and bigger screen

but bigger doesnt mean better, studio 15 screen is said to be sharper. dats all that it has of an advantage, but vostro screen is anti-glare which might be really useful in sunny situations hehe
