I'm looking for a budget sub for a small room 9x12x9.5 ft (~1000sq ft). Is CHT-10Q good enough? I'm particularly interested in the auto-EQ. But is it good and accurate? I auditioned the unit in AnL but the room was 3 times my room size and it was out of the box and not optimized yet. If there is anyone who owns this or the siblings, or even do the measurents please share your thoughts. I don't bother for musical performance, only the oomph for movies. Thank you.

Initially i also thought of gettin the SPl1200 but after auditioning the 1000 and based on my room size (smaller than A&L by 1/4), i decided that the 1000 was good enough already..

based on your room size it is adequate.... since u don't need a musical sub I feel the 10Q is a good fit. If want 'bias' professional advise, u can try the calculator in Velodyne's website

go for 12Q la.

initially i also thought 10Q sudah cukup and after audit both at hifi shop, i straight away choose 12Q. i audited both 10Q and 12Q NIB and i found 10Q is "struggling". perhaps not proper setup kua...

it would great if you can audit both ... and use your ear and 'feeling' to decide smile.gif

Mr PM, what's the price of cheapest SPL series? I like the small size also. But I think the price is almost same as SVS SB12plus (as published unofficially by htkaki). hmm.gif

Based on the specs and price, if you want to get Velo 10R or 12R, better get SVS PB12NSD. Real sub can play quite flat down to 20hz. If SPL and above, then Velo would be a good choice due to the built in eq which is quite expensive to add on for other brand of sub. In the market the eq itself would worth min RM 1.5k and above.

Using more than one subwoofer is not the major problem nor is using 7 subwoofers. The difficulty is integrating them to sound as though they are one..

Trust me if u do not set up multiple subwoofers correctly, it is a mess.

Bro, 7.8 better nia.

It is not by using sub pre-out for all. The 7 subs are connected via high pass for each channel. In Spore, there is a setup similar to this. IIRC, all SVS Ultra subs.

7 channel + .1 mah.

Extracted from MJ acoustics web

How do I setup a multi-sub system?

If you're setting up a multi-sub setup comprising of 6 subs - five main subs and one for the LFE, the best way to connect them is via a high level cable from the back of the 5 main speakers into the high level input of each sub situated next to the 5 speakers and a low level connection from the phono sub out on an AV amp to the low level input of the sub you've chosen to handle the LFE.

This setup is what we consider to be the ULTIMATE in Home Cinema experience. With the DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound formats , a full range signal is sent to all 5 channels, therefore they can all benefit from having a sub on them. You may be thinking MJ Acoustics must be mad to expect most people to be able to afford a setup like this, but no, we are not mad, with the award Pro 50 from just £299.00, its more affordable than you could ever imagine.

Other excellent configurations we recommend / suggest you try are:
2 sub setup - one sub on the LFE (low level) and one sub on the centre channel (high level).
2 sub setup - one sub on both left and right mains (high level), with one sub being fed the added LFE signal into its low level input.
3 sub setup - all front channels with a sub on left, right and centre (high level), with the centre sub being fed the added LFE signal into its low level input.
3 sub setup - one sub on LFE (low level), one sub on centre (high level) and one sub wired to the rear surround speakers (high level).
4 sub setup - all front channels with a sub on left, right and centre (high level), with the centre sub being fed the added LFE signal into its low level input and one sub on the rear surrounds (high level).
5 sub setup - one sub on all 5 speakers (high level), the centre sub being fed with the LFE signal (low level).

There are many other possibilities for multi-sub setups. Although just one of our subs will be the norm for most people, the luxury of a multi-sub setup far exceeds the Home Cinema experience

Bro, 7.8 better nia.

It is not by using sub pre-out for all. The 7 subs are connected via high pass for each channel. In Spore, there is a setup similar to this. IIRC, all SVS Ultra subs.
*
That would be quite the ultimate setup. Practically though there are 2 main challenges:

1) Space to distribute the subs to all the 5 or 7 locations. I see many multisub installations where they stack the subs all in front (either middle and L/R). But I think ideally is to co-locate the sub with the rest of the speakers.

2) Power points. Most people wouldn't have distributed power points all over the room. Of course, this can still be overcome using extension wires but may be unsightly.

Thank you.
*
For your room size I think 10Q might be enough, but if you want extra headroom then consider the 12Q. This is in case you like extra oomph for movies. The best is to audition both and come to your own conclusions.

The auto-EQ does work and helps to even out the bass some. In addition the Q series also has 4 presets including a 'movie' mode.

Hi, it's me!

Due to my small living room, that's why I'm choosing between MS309 and Wharfy sw150 instead of velo
I believe the velo 10Q at RM2.2K is good enough. I can top up even RM600-RM800 for it from my previous budget 1.2k - 1.4k.
Just, I'm concerned that is this velo-10 suitable for my apartment where the living room size around 9x8 sqft??
Will it overbassy or louder that affected other people here?

I really need your comments as Im going for my new HT setup by next week.

You can always turn down the volume of the sub if its too loud. But i personally think that most problem with sub not integrating well with the speakers is due to the poor quality of the sub. Overbassy normally happen when the sub is very boominess. But if you have a good quality sub that is clean and fast, you will want more of it instead of complaining that it is over bassy. Trust me that it is worth spending more on a good sub because it really improves the overall sound of the main speakers. I only learn about this when i got my new sub 2 weeks ago. Its the single most expensive piece of HT hardware i bought but it really makes night and day difference. Now i will not go back to those boomy sub anymore as they really sound like crap! icon_rolleyes.gif

I think the concern with wooden floor is whether it will cause any boominess. Your wood floor is laid on top of battens right?

Anyway, if really got an issue then a SubDude would help.

Yeah, those 80cm x 80cm tiles. I remembered it costs around RM150 per piece imported from Italy when I quote my renovation last year. In the end have to settle for 60x60 sweat.gif
*
Italian stuff sure expensive wan. Get the China 80cm x 80 cm, I've seen them for about RM60 a piece.

1st and 2nd floor timber strips on top of concrete cement. They are the interlocking type, so it is just laid on top of the cement, that's why I am worried. sweat.gif

What is a SubDude?
*
If laid just on top of cement then actually there is less issue since there is direct contact between the strips and the cement. If you use battens, there is a gap between the strips and the cement thus giving rise to possibility of resonance, etc.

nowadays timber strip will be directly laid onto the floor slab
unless u want a higher floor finish level
for a elite room with exceptional high ceiling drool.gif

i think it's still 2-storey with a very high floor height at living area
and with few steps of staircase leading to back portion
as the front sliding doors is high up to almost the half of the building height
not possible there's a floor halfway in between of the sliding doors

btw, i'm just judging front the appearance
no layout plan for me to refer
maybe there's a wide gap between the 1st floor and the sliding door
u might be right tongue.gif

hello all senior forumers..
Im new here..pls bagi tunjuk ajar..
Did anybody try Velodyne DD series before?
I went to A&L puchong outlet.
A friendly staff name ricky if im not wrong.
He adviced me to be patient and wait for the new DD series.
Which is better than the old DD but slightly expensive also..
If im not wrong even a small 10inch DD already rm10k.
But since it is so expensive i would wait for the new DD series.
After i try it and if it*ngam* my taste then maybe i buy it.
Saving money very hardly nowadays.. cry.gif
But so far is the older DD series which is available in some A&L now really that great?
I try the Velodyne SPL-1200 before and its already very good.
And they told me if i try the DD series, surely i won;t go for SPL anymore.. blink.gif

U use ur sub for what? Listening to music or watching movie? For music then spl & dd will be good, but it will lost out in the 'ump' factor if u use it for movie, ported sub will be better but then ported sub's size will be bigger.

Ah! So it is for movie.........then how low it go is of most imp factor to consider. Yes. Velo DD model is good but it compare Velo DD10 & Velo CHT 15Q the Velo CHT 15Q will be much better then the DD10 & it will be much cheaper, only that it is very big. smile.gif

Now if only I am rich..............I will go for Velo DD1812, that will be the sub to own! icon_idea.gif BUT I am a poor peasant so no choice still playing around with my 14",12" & 10" sad.gif

If you have space limitation like in HK, then Sunfire is the way to go. I'd the opportunity to audition it. IMHO, it is meant for small/med room. For the money and small size, I wld have opt for JL F113.

If size does matter, then DD is the way to go thumbup.gif . If not, Submersive or 13-Ultra can easily pounds it for movie.

In my view you are bound by your pre-conceived notions. In your mind only Velodyne or Sunfire is good - yes both are established and reputable brands and they make good subwoofers. But are they the only makers of good subwoofers? Many new subwoofer makers have come up in the last several years and they also make good subwoofers.

You said "I use my ears as a tool", but it seems you are selecting Velodyne based on pre-conceived notions. If you are truly serious about using your ears as a tool then you should take the time to audition other subs besides Velodyne or Sunfire. Who knows, your ears might even find something that is better or maybe something just as good but cheaper.

How do you know DD series is best already? They are good no doubt, but the best? hmm.gif

"not looking so much for the frequency that goes how low" - then you don't know what you are missing from movies. You should read up more on this matter. Even if you decide to buy Velodyne, knowing how low the sub goes can affect your decision which Velodyne sub to buy and it will certainly affect whether you get the full impact from the movie. In the end you are prepared to spend quite a lot of money on the sub, might as well spend it as best you can so that you can get the most out of the movies.

*
Several years?but can they do the same technology just like Velodyne or Sunfire or even JL Audio?
As i notice, mostly huge sub their frequency are quite low.
But can you imagine that a small size sub just like DD10 & DD12 can go that low also?
In terms of Velodyne technology I already been amazed!
SVS?yes i know you are trying to convinced me to test SVS.
But their HUGE size is already a good reason that I won;t choose SVS.
Oppsss.maybe i just keep quite just to avoid being boooooo by all SVS dude for trying to destroy their business here..
Im sorry if I make you all guys angry.

No, it's ok. Each has their own preference. As I mentioned, size is not on SVS' side.

For proven small form factor, have you auditioned the JL Audio's F113?

Im sorry friend..
But as i know SVS is a good sub also.
Just that the size matters only..
If their size can be smaller just like Velodyne or somehow Sunfire maybe I can consider it since it is very affordable.
Btw I heard JL Audio this brand before.
A friend of mine auditioned it before.
But very hard only can make appointment and the location of the distributor is at Amcorp Mall if im not wrong.
Should find one day to try this subwoofer since this sub is already famous and won several awards back in 2006 and 2007.
Do you auditioned it before?

Hey, its ur money man, do whatever u want with it.

End of the day, its ur wallet and ur satisfaction.

jchong was merely telling you that to evaluate a sub, there are other technical issues to choose.

However, u know ur limitations and ur criteria. Looks like ur criteria is size. There was another guy a couple of weeks ago who was the same his was price.

This is a public forum, u give people flak, they give u back. No hard feelings....

Good for u that u made ur mind up abt Velo's technology, its good no doubt.

Just for the record, jchong does not own a SVS as well. Neither do I. I don't think he was trying to convince u to get SVS, he was trying to ask u to make ur choice with an open mind.

What makes you think they cannot do the same technology as Velodyne, Sunfire or JL? Have you read up on the various brands out there to see what technology they have?

A subwoofer isn't a terribly complicated object and there are certain laws of physics that will constrain the sub design. Generally with larger subs it is easier to go low. Yes, a small sub like DD-10 or DD-12 can also go low, but probably with the aid of EQ. The other factor to consider is what is the output down low? This is a spec that most do not disclose. Understanding this is also key to understanding sub performance.

I'm not trying to convince you to test SVS. I'm not an SVS owner myself. I'm just trying to get you to expand your horizons and mindset. The more subs you listen to the more you understand about bass. It's not only about how low - you also want to see if the bass is fast, boomy, articulate, tight, powerful, punchy, etc.

I think it is a good idea for you to try out the JL sub. For compact size sub the JL is rated as one of the best. Either the F112 or F113 may be ok size-wise.

No need to be so "hak hei". I don't think anybody got angry, we're just having a discussion. Even if the discussion gets a bit "heated" sometimes but I think as long as it's done in the right spirit then there's no hard feelings.

bro i think jchong is just trying to let u know there are subs out there that are cheaper n might also be better than velodyne.. he just trying to convince u to keep your mind open.. we may sound like svs fan boys coz the only non mainstream subs widely available here is svs.. so we always use svs as an example of better value subwooders.. jchong is not even a svs user... i know the size is too big for u .. but y not just try it n see what u r missing.. u got nothing to lose.. these fridge like subs do go low but it doesnt mean they produce rubbish in the other frequencies.. anyway just keep in mind that velo or sunfire or jl are great subs but might not have the best performance bcoz of their size.. but for 'non fridge like' subs they should be among the best...

oh 1 more thing maybe u should wait for the new DD. It was sitting on top of craigsub's ranking list.. and now it has dropped to 7th.. i think it does show in a way that the old DD is aging. Happy sub hunting!!

One thing to note is that the model in craigsub's list is the biggest one, DD-18. Not sure how the smaller ones like DD-10 or DD-12 would rank.

And bear in mind DD-18 also quite large, 23" x 21.25" x 19.25". This is nearly the same size as the PB12+ at 25” x 21" x 19".

Hey Anfieldude, after already few weeks, still not yet cool down?still hot tempered ah about SVS issue ah?
Calm down my friend.just chill and relax la.
After all we are only discussing and no commitment.
SVS is also a good subwoofer.

Just the size matter only.
You cannot blame benben79 because maybe his place is not big also la.
As he complained SVS is too big for his liking.
And he never mentioned SVS is not good also.

Everybody made mistake just like the other day JL Audio Fathom f113 amplifier power.
It only amplify 2500watt instead of 3600 watt.
I also apologised about this wrong info.

hello HT Freak.
No.not yet.
Im waiting for the new DD 10 or DD12 arrive only I made my decision.
Between as other forum member recommended me JL Audio Fathom F113 which is quite similar price to DD 12 too.
Will try to go for a demo one day.
Moreover,i'm kinda busy nowadays.
No time to drop by JV Concept for Sunfire subwoofer demo since their shop is so far away.
Anyway, did you listen to Velodyne DD10,DD12,JL Audio F113 or Sunfire HRS12 or their TS series subwoofer before?

Which is better than the old DD
but slightly expensive also..

Haha,

Hv been readin de latter part of tis thrd n find it pretty intrstin..
Smallest sub tat does quite well is de sunfire - plenty wattage to compensate for its size n driver.. is it better than de rest .. well like everytin else tats pretty subjective..
Now on why svs has made waves in de HT scene is tat, for de money, u get a pretty decent sub for HT..
Best advice is to try out all tat u hv in mind.. I mean if u jus try out de velos then tat would be no comparisons but if indeed u tried it n also a comparable svs n u still prefer de velos then gud for u..
